How to Estimate the True Cost of Owning a Car Won on a Game Show

A prize car can bring taxes, registration fees, insurance, fuel, repairs, and depreciation. Estimate cash outlay and net ownership cost separately using the vehicle and your location.

A game-show car is not necessarily free to keep. To estimate its true cost, choose how long you plan to own it, then count the taxes and fees due to claim and register it, recurring costs such as insurance and fuel, and the value it will lose before you sell it. Keep cash expenses separate from depreciation so you can see both how much money you must spend and what ownership costs after resale.

The figures depend on the prize car, the winner’s location and insurance profile, annual mileage, and ownership period. This guide is U.S.-focused; use current tax guidance, local fee schedules, and quotes for the actual vehicle rather than treating a national average as a personal budget.

Define what “cost” means before you calculate

There are two useful totals, and they answer different questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cash needed and spent: money required to claim and register the car, plus the expenses paid while you own it. This is the practical budget question.
  • Net economic cost: cash expenses plus the car’s loss in value over the period, with any resale proceeds handled consistently. This reflects the resources consumed by owning the vehicle.

A car can have a large cash cost at the outset because of taxes and fees even if you sell it soon. Conversely, a car may have modest recurring expenses but still lose substantial value. State your ownership period—such as three years—and expected annual mileage before comparing options.

Use the same period and mileage assumptions for every scenario. A one-year estimate cannot be fairly compared with a five-year estimate, and an estimate for light use may not suit someone who expects to drive much more. If you are uncertain, make separate short- and long-ownership estimates rather than hiding uncertainty in one precise-looking figure.

It also helps to divide the estimate into three views: money due around delivery, recurring cash expenses while the car is yours, and the value remaining when you sell. That layout makes it easier to answer both “Can I afford to take the car?” and “What will it cost me to own it?” A prize’s reported value is important for tax purposes, but it is not itself the same thing as cash you pay at delivery or the total cost of ownership.

Estimate the taxes and fees to claim the prize

Start with the prize’s reported value

For U.S. federal income tax purposes, a noncash prize generally counts as income at its fair market value. IRS Publication 17 says prizes from quiz programs and other events generally must be included in income, and goods and services are valued at fair market value. Confirm the value the show or sponsor reports and check the rules and forms applicable to the tax year in which you receive the car. IRS Publication 17 (2025)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reported value is not necessarily the same as the amount you will pay to claim the prize, nor does it by itself determine your final tax bill. Your actual tax depends on your full tax situation and applicable tax-year rules. For a meaningful estimate, ask the sponsor what value it will report and when, then consult current IRS information or a tax professional about the consequences for your return.

Do not turn the reported value into a guessed tax bill by applying a generic percentage. The prize value is an input to your tax situation; the actual result depends on the applicable tax year and your circumstances. No universal tax rate or single amount due applies to every winner.

Check state and local obligations separately

Do not assume federal treatment settles everything. Check with the relevant state tax authority and motor vehicle agency about any state or local tax, title, registration, inspection, or other charges applicable to the prize car and your circumstances. The amount and timing are jurisdiction-specific; a national estimate cannot supply a reliable figure without knowing where the vehicle will be registered.

Ask the show or sponsor what paperwork and delivery arrangements are included. Then ask the motor vehicle agency which charges will be due to put the car in your name and make it road-legal. Keep one-time charges distinct from recurring registration and inspection expenses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a small delivery checklist: obtain the prize paperwork and reported value from the sponsor; clarify what delivery or title steps the sponsor handles; identify the state and local agencies responsible for taxes and registration; and ask which charges are due immediately versus later. Do not assume a charge is covered—or not covered—until you have checked the paperwork and the relevant agency’s current requirements.

Build the ownership budget, one category at a time

Insurance

Get a quote for the actual vehicle, ideally using its VIN, and provide the drivers, address, coverage limits, deductibles, and intended use. A generic average may not reflect your premium: the car, location, driving history, and coverage choices all matter. If you may sell the car rather than keep it, obtain the quote before deciding; insurance is a continuing ownership cost, not a tax on the prize.

Use the quote for the coverage you would actually choose, and make sure it reflects the intended drivers and use. If those details change, the estimate may change too. For a multi-year budget, multiply the quote only as a planning estimate and note that premiums and coverage choices can vary over time; do not present an insurer’s quote for today as a guaranteed bill for every future year.

Fuel or charging

Estimate annual miles and use the vehicle’s EPA fuel-economy information together with a local fuel price. For a vehicle that charges from electricity, account for the relevant charging costs as well. Multiply the annual estimate by the number of years in your chosen period, adjusting for any expected change in mileage or energy prices. The EPA’s true-cost-of-car-ownership guidance is a starting point for considering costs beyond the purchase price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful estimate has three visible inputs: annual mileage, the vehicle’s efficiency information, and the local price of the energy it uses. If you drive more or less than expected, recalculate rather than carrying forward an unsuitable annual figure. For a charging vehicle, use the charging costs relevant to your situation; there is no universal electricity price or a specific vehicle’s consumption figure provided here.

Maintenance, repairs, and tires

Use the maintenance schedule for the exact vehicle and estimate the work likely to fall within your ownership period. Include routine service, tires, and a reasonable allowance for repairs; a new car and a used or damaged prize vehicle may have very different needs. If the car’s condition is uncertain, arrange an inspection or obtain a repair estimate before committing to keep it. Avoid treating scheduled maintenance as a complete estimate of repair costs.

Check the vehicle’s condition and service information before assuming that a prize car will need only routine work. A maintenance schedule helps identify scheduled service, but it does not price every repair or predict the condition of a particular car. Use an inspection or repair estimate when condition is uncertain, and include tires separately if they are not already included in the estimate you are using. There is no universal repair allowance, so make the assumption explicit rather than inventing a standard figure.

Registration and inspection over time

Include recurring registration or inspection costs for each year you expect to own the car, not just the initial title and registration charges. Confirm the applicable schedule with the relevant local agency, since the rules and amounts depend on where you register the vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check when payments fall due as well as their amounts. A fee paid once at registration belongs in the one-time line; a charge that recurs belongs in the years it applies. This distinction helps prevent both omission and double-counting, especially when comparing an early sale with a longer hold.

Financing costs, if you borrow

If you borrow money to cover taxes, fees, or other expenses, include the interest and fees you expect to pay during the period. The borrowed principal is money you must repay, but do not count it twice as both an expense and a loan repayment in a cash-flow total. Show the financing cost separately if you want to compare the cost of borrowing with paying upfront.

Keep the borrowing decision separate from the car’s underlying operating costs. A cash budget can show when loan payments are due, while an economic-cost comparison should identify interest and borrowing fees without treating the principal as an additional cost on top of the expense it financed. This makes it clear how borrowing changes cash flow and what it adds to the overall cost.

Account for depreciation and resale without double-counting

Depreciation is the decline in the car’s value during the time you own it. It is an economic cost even though you won the vehicle rather than buying it. Estimate the car’s value when received and its likely resale value at the end of your selected period, using the exact trim, mileage, condition, and expected sale date as closely as possible. The difference is the value lost over that period. EPA’s ownership-cost guidance also treats depreciation as part of the cost of owning a vehicle.

Be precise about what your total includes. If you report cash expenses plus depreciation, do not subtract resale proceeds again: depreciation already equals starting value minus ending value. Alternatively, show cash expenses and resale proceeds as separate lines, and make clear whether the remaining car value is excluded from your stated total. A transparent breakdown avoids making a car look cheaper or more expensive through inconsistent accounting.

For a realistic resale estimate, match the estimate to the car’s exact trim, expected mileage, condition, and the date you expect to sell. A broad estimate for a different version of the vehicle or a different ownership period may distort depreciation. If the resale estimate is uncertain, show a range or separate scenarios, and label it as an estimate rather than a guaranteed sale price.

Use a worksheet for your chosen ownership period

Gather actual inputs before filling in the estimate. The sponsor’s prize paperwork helps establish the reported value and delivery details; state and local agencies provide tax and fee rules; an insurer can quote the actual VIN and driver; EPA fuel-economy information and local energy prices help estimate use costs; and the vehicle’s maintenance schedule, condition, and a realistic resale estimate inform operating costs and depreciation.

Collect inputs in the order you will need them. First choose the ownership period, annual mileage, and registration location. Next obtain the sponsor’s reported prize value and any delivery details. Then request current tax and motor-vehicle information, an insurance quote for the VIN and intended drivers, and local fuel or charging prices. Finally, use the vehicle’s schedule and condition to estimate service, repairs, and tires, and find a resale estimate that matches the trim, mileage, condition, and sale date. Mark which numbers are confirmed and which are assumptions so you know what to update.

Cost item What to enter How to treat it
Prize value and tax Fair market value reported by the show or sponsor; tax estimate for the applicable year Separate the reported prize value from cash paid to claim the car.
One-time taxes and fees Applicable state or local charges, title, initial registration, and other claim-related costs Use the winner’s jurisdiction and confirm timing with the relevant agencies.
Insurance Quote for the vehicle, driver, location, and selected coverage Multiply or schedule for the ownership period; revise if coverage or drivers change.
Fuel or charging Expected annual miles, vehicle efficiency, and local energy price Estimate by year, using the intended mileage and energy source.
Maintenance, repairs, and tires Scheduled service plus estimates based on condition and expected use Include likely work during the selected period, not only routine service.
Recurring registration and inspections Local annual or periodic charges Include each charge that falls within the ownership period.
Financing Interest and borrowing fees, if applicable Include financing charges; avoid counting principal twice.
Resale value and depreciation Estimated end-of-period resale value and starting value Show cash expenses separately from value lost, and do not subtract resale twice.

A simple cash-outlay calculation is:

Total cash outlay over N years = claim and one-time fees + insurance + fuel or charging + recurring registration and inspection + maintenance, repairs, and tires + financing charges.

Then show the value change separately. If depreciation is calculated as starting value minus resale value, add that depreciation to cash outlay to present an economic-cost figure; do not also subtract the resale proceeds. Label the period and assumptions beside both totals.

For clarity, the worksheet can show a delivery subtotal, a per-year operating subtotal, and a total for the full period. Keep any value remaining at the end visible as resale value, rather than burying it in an operating-cost line. If you choose to report a net figure, state whether it is cash outlay alone or cash outlay plus depreciation. These labels let another person reproduce the estimate and understand what it does—and does not—include.

Compare keeping the car with selling it

If you are deciding whether to keep the prize, compare the cash you would need to claim and operate it with a realistic sale offer or resale estimate. For a keep-versus-sell decision, focus on future costs and the value you could receive by selling; past expenses you cannot recover should not determine what is best from today onward. Account for any taxes or fees that still apply in either choice, and compare alternatives on the same time horizon and mileage assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run at least two scenarios if mileage, ownership duration, or resale value is uncertain—for example, a shorter hold and a longer hold. Keep the underlying assumptions visible rather than blending them into a single supposedly universal cost. The appropriate comparison is specific to the car and winner, not simply whether a national average is higher or lower.

For a decision made before taking delivery, separate amounts already fixed by the prize terms from costs that depend on your choice to keep the vehicle. For a decision made after receiving it, focus on the value you could get by selling now and the future expenses you would avoid or incur by keeping it. In either case, compare the same future period and driving assumptions. Do not let sunk costs—money already spent and not recoverable—stand in for the value of your current alternatives.

How national ownership averages can—and cannot—help

AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs analysis estimated an average annual cost of $11,577 to own and operate a new vehicle. AAA selected five top-selling models in each of nine vehicle categories and combined category estimates. It is a comparison point for new vehicles, not a quote for a particular game-show car, winner, location, or driving pattern. AAA 2025 fact sheet

AAA’s September 2026 announcement reported an average annual cost of $12,863 in its 2026 analysis, while noting that methodology updates mean the 2026 result is not directly comparable with 2025. Do not treat the difference between those published figures as a clean year-over-year price increase. AAA 2026 announcement

AAA’s calculator can help structure a personalized comparison using vehicle category, powertrain, location, and driving habits. Its results still depend on the inputs and assumptions; use actual quotes and local charges when preparing a budget for the prize car. AAA has emphasized understanding costs from purchase through resale in its September 5, 2024 announcement.

Use a national average as a reason to check that you have not overlooked a category, not as the answer for your prize. AAA’s 2025 figure covers an average new vehicle under its study’s assumptions, while an individual prize car may differ in value, age, condition, powertrain, location, mileage, and insurance profile. The 2026 number is also based on a methodology that AAA says was updated, so it should not be read as a straightforward increase from 2025. A calculator may help compare scenarios, but your own quotes and local fee schedules are the relevant inputs for a personal budget.

Sources and limits of this estimate

The cited tax guidance is IRS Publication 17 for 2025. Verify the edition and reporting facts for the tax year in which you receive the car. The published cost benchmarks are U.S.-focused and time-sensitive, and this guide does not price a particular state’s taxes, title or registration fees, insurance premiums, maintenance needs, or resale value. Those figures require details not specified here: the vehicle, the winner’s jurisdiction and insurance profile, mileage, condition, and ownership period.

For the same reason, this guide gives a method rather than a promised dollar total. Use current tax information, agency fee schedules, individualized insurance quotes, local energy prices, and vehicle-specific service and resale estimates. Update the inputs if your plans change. No single national figure can replace those checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What taxes do I owe on a car I won on a game show?

For U.S. federal income tax purposes, a noncash prize generally must be included in income at fair market value. The state or local consequences and your final tax bill depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances, so confirm the sponsor’s reported value and consult current tax guidance for the year you receive the prize.

Is a game-show car really free?

It may be awarded without a purchase price, but claiming, registering, insuring, operating, and eventually selling it can involve costs. Whether keeping it makes financial sense depends on those costs and the value you could receive by selling.

How much does it cost to keep a prize car?

There is no reliable single figure without the vehicle, location, driver, mileage, and ownership period. Estimate taxes and one-time fees, insurance, fuel or charging, recurring registration and inspection, maintenance, repairs, tires, and any financing charges; then show depreciation separately from cash outlay.

Does the car’s prize value equal my tax bill or the amount I need to claim it?

No. The sponsor’s reported fair market value is relevant to U.S. federal income tax reporting, but it is not itself your final tax bill or necessarily the cash required at delivery. Confirm the value and delivery arrangements with the sponsor, then check current tax guidance and local agency requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I avoid counting resale value or depreciation twice?

Either show cash expenses and resale proceeds as separate lines, or calculate depreciation as starting value minus end-of-period resale value and add that value loss to cash expenses. Do not subtract resale proceeds again when depreciation already includes the ending value.

Can I use AAA’s annual ownership-cost figure for my prize car?

Use it as context, not a personal forecast. AAA estimated $11,577 per year for an average new vehicle in its 2025 analysis, and reported $12,863 for 2026 with a methodology update that makes the results not directly comparable. Get vehicle-specific quotes and local charges for your own estimate.

The Bottom Line

To estimate a game-show car’s true cost, choose an ownership period and mileage, verify the sponsor’s reported prize value and local claim costs, then gather vehicle- and driver-specific estimates for insurance, energy, registration, service, repairs, and tires. Report cash outlay separately from depreciation and resale, and use national averages only as context—not as a personalized budget.
