What to Do If Your BMW i4 Won’t Charge

A practical guide to checking BMW i4 charging settings, home equipment, public stations, and when to contact an electrician or BMW Center.

A BMW i4 that will not charge may have a problem with the charging station, home electrical supply, charging settings, or the vehicle. Start with safe checks: note where and how charging failed, verify the settings and cable connection, then compare with another suitable charger if possible. A single failed session is not enough to identify a faulty car part.

First, identify what happened

Before changing settings or trying another charger, note the conditions. These details help separate a station or supply issue from a vehicle issue:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Was the i4 at home or at a public station?
  • Was it AC or DC charging?
  • Did charging fail to start, or did it stop after starting?
  • Has the problem happened more than once?
  • Did the car display a Check Control message, or did the charger show an error?

BMW’s 2024 North America diagnostic checklist asks service staff to consider these variables, along with the charger, current limit, and authentication method. If practical, compare another charging location or piece of equipment before concluding the car is at fault. BMW service bulletin hosted by NHTSA.

Check the charging settings and plug

  1. Check the connection. Make sure the connector is fully seated at the vehicle and, where applicable, the charging unit. Visually inspect the cable and connector for obvious dirt, wear, or damage; do not use damaged equipment.
  2. Review the charge-current limit. In the iDrive charging settings, confirm the selected current is suitable for the electrical installation and charging equipment.
  3. Check when the car is set to charge. If you expect charging to start immediately, enable “Charge immediately.” If you use a departure time or charging window, check that the schedule does not defer the start. BMW lists a programmed later start and incorrect settings among possible reasons charging does not begin as expected. BMW USA charging guidance and the BMW service bulletin describe settings and timing as relevant checks.

If the i4 will not charge at home

Check that the charging unit is powered and the outlet or circuit appears to be operating. You can check whether a breaker has tripped, but do not open electrical equipment, modify wiring, or attempt repairs inside the charger. If possible, try another suitable outlet or charger and record whether the i4 charges there.

BMW’s diagnostic checklist asks which home charger was used, what current limit was selected, and whether another outlet or AC charger—and, where available, Level 1 or Level 2 charging—was tried. BMW says home charging solutions require installation by a certified electrician. If the household supply or installation is suspect, have a qualified electrician inspect it. BMW diagnostic checklist; BMW USA home-charging information.

BMW’s stated U.S. home-charging figures

For the U.S. setups it describes, BMW says its Wallbox can provide Level 2 charging up to 9.6 kW. BMW also gives up to 9.6 kW for its Flexible Fast Charger with a NEMA 14-50 adapter on a 240 V, 40 A circuit. These are BMW-published maximum specifications for those configurations, not a promise of the same charging rate in every home, market, vehicle configuration, or installation. If the standard BMW charging unit has a flashing red Fault light

BMW’s published reset sequence for the standard charging unit is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect the vehicle charging plug.
  2. Unplug the charging unit’s main plug from the wall socket.
  3. Wait at least five seconds, then reconnect the main plug.
  4. Wait until the Power indicator is continuously lit.
  5. Reconnect the vehicle plug.

If the red Fault indicator continues to flash, consult the unit’s operating instructions or contact a BMW Center rather than repeating improvised resets. Keep the unit out of direct sunlight and protect it from overheating. BMW Flexible Fast Charger owner’s manual.

If the i4 will not charge at a public station

Check that the station is ready, the cable is properly fitted, and the app, card, or Plug & Charge authorization has completed. If the session still will not start, try another station if practical. When the problem appears to be station-side, contact the operator using the support number displayed on the charger; BMW says it cannot control the technical availability of public charging stations. BMW USA public-charging FAQ.

Record the station name or operator, how you tried to authenticate, and any error on the station display. These details are among the variables in BMW’s diagnostic checklist. For a public-session failure that appears to involve authentication, confirm that your specific car is eligible for Plug & Charge: BMW says the feature is supported on 2025 and newer BMW EV models, including i4, while some 2024 i4 vehicles require a BMW Center software upgrade. Use comparisons to narrow down the cause

If you can do so safely, compare one condition at a time and record the outcome:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Different location: Does the i4 charge at another home or public charger?
  • Different equipment: Does another suitable charger work on the same vehicle?
  • Different charging type: Is the symptom limited to AC or DC charging?
  • Different start timing: Does charging begin when set to start immediately rather than during a scheduled window?
  • Different point in the session: Does charging fail at startup or stop after it has begun?

A failure at one station or with one home setup points to a different set of possibilities than a repeated failure across known-good chargers. These comparisons help inform diagnosis; they do not identify a failed component on their own. BMW’s 2024 checklist is intended for service diagnosis, not as a consumer repair procedure. The durable IP65-rated waterproof housing and reinforced cable ensure reliable charging in all weather conditions, keeping your vehicle safe year-round.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • Contact the charging-station operator if the station is unavailable, authorization fails at that station, or other evidence points to a station problem.
  • Contact a qualified electrician if the home circuit, outlet, or installation may be the cause. Do not open or modify the circuit or charging equipment.
  • Arrange BMW Center diagnosis if charging repeatedly fails at multiple known-good chargers, the car displays a warning, or the standard unit’s red Fault light persists after BMW’s reset sequence.

Save any car or charger messages and your notes about location, charging type, settings, and whether the problem occurred at startup or mid-session. A repeated failure makes a vehicle fault more plausible, but symptoms alone do not establish which part has failed; BMW’s bulletin calls for diagnostic testing rather than a consumer parts diagnosis.
