Those figures are useful for narrowing choices, but they cannot tell you whether your passengers will be comfortable or whether a particular child-seat arrangement will work. If either question is decisive, test the exact setup in the vehicle.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
Before comparing measurements, make sure both specification sheets describe the same market and model year, and check the exact trim. Published figures and equipment can vary by trim; for example, Honda’s 2026 Pilot specifications show interior measurements by trim. Where possible, use the manufacturers’ official specification pages rather than mixing figures from different sources.

Record each vehicle’s second-row figures in the same units and in matching columns. Do not treat a measurement as a guarantee that a passenger of a particular height or build will be comfortable. The figures are most useful as a consistent first screen; the cabin’s shape, seat position, and the people or restraints using it still matter.

Compare the four second-row measurements

Keep all four measurements visible rather than choosing a winner based on one. Toyota’s comparison table lists rear headroom, legroom, hip room, and shoulder room separately, illustrating that different vehicles can lead on different dimensions. Its comparison includes the Sienna, a minivan, so it is an example of how measurements are presented—not a two-row SUV recommendation. Toyota’s vehicle comparison provides that example.

Keep cabin volume and cargo capacity in their own categories
Passenger volume can describe cabin space overall, while cargo volume describes storage capacity. Neither substitutes for the second-row measurements. Honda’s Pilot specifications list passenger volume and cargo volume separately from second-row headroom, legroom, shoulder room, and hip room. Use those volume figures to assess broader cabin or luggage needs, not to infer that a specific second-row seat will suit your passengers.
Wheelbase and exterior dimensions provide vehicle context, but they are not direct measures of the space a rear passenger has at their seat. Keep them separate from the four second-row figures when you build a comparison.

Check the actual fit when people or child seats decide the choice
For passenger comfort
Visit the vehicle and sit in the second row with the front seat adjusted for its regular occupant. Check the seating positions your passengers will actually use, rather than relying on a brochure figure or an empty-cabin impression. A published legroom number, for example, does not prove that a particular passenger will have a comfortable posture behind a particular driver.
For child seats or three-across seating
Bring the restraint you intend to use and try it in the exact vehicle and seating position. Confirm the installation and fit requirements in both the vehicle owner’s manual and the child-restraint manual. Check whether adjacent seats can be used as planned, whether the restraint can be secured as instructed, whether occupants can buckle and unbuckle, and whether the remaining passenger space works for your family.

Manufacturer claims can help identify what a vehicle offers, but they are not independent fit tests for every restraint and seating combination. Acura’s 2026 ADX specifications identify lower anchors in the second-row outboard seats and tether anchors in all second-row positions; that describes the vehicle’s anchor arrangement, not a guarantee that a chosen restraint will fit every position. Acura’s 2026 ADX specifications list those details. Nissan says the 2026 Rogue has 38.5 inches of rear-seat legroom and describes its LATCH arrangement; its three-across statement is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent test of every setup. Nissan’s 2026 Rogue information applies to that model year and vehicle.
Build a useful comparison sheet
For each SUV, capture the following from the same model year, market, and trim’s official specifications, then add what you learn from a visit:

- Model year, market, and trim associated with the figures
- Whether your actual passengers are comfortable with the front seat in its normal position
- Whether your intended child seats and seating locations work as instructed
- Cargo capacity, recorded separately if storage is part of the decision
Manufacturers do not necessarily use an identical cross-brand measurement protocol, and published dimensions cannot establish personal comfort or child-seat fit. Treat differences in the figures as a screening tool, then let the exact in-person arrangement answer the questions the spec sheet cannot.
Why the published figures still help
Official spec tables make it easier to narrow a shortlist before visiting vehicles. For instance, Acura’s ADX page lists the four second-row dimensions together, while Hyundai’s Venue page reports headroom, legroom, shoulder room, and hip room separately for front and rear seats. Hyundai’s Venue specifications offer another example of keeping those dimensions distinct. These examples show how to read specification tables; they do not establish which vehicle will fit a particular shopper better.
