If your turbocharged six-cylinder engine suddenly loses power, ease off the accelerator and prioritize getting out of traffic safely. If the vehicle feels unsafe or displays a serious warning, follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle; do not assume that low power alone means the turbocharger has failed. Reduced power can be an engine-control response to a boost problem, but faults elsewhere in the intake, exhaust, fuel, ignition, cooling, or electrical systems can also contribute.
What to do first
- Protect yourself and other road users. Avoid hard acceleration. If the car cannot keep pace safely, a serious warning appears, or you notice overheating, smoke, or an unusual mechanical sound, reduce speed and stop as soon as it is safe. Follow the correct owner’s manual: the Ford manual instruction reviewed applies to its specific limited-power warning, and it says manual information can vary by vehicle and market. Ford owner-manual information.
- Note what happened. Record the exact dashboard message, when the power loss began, whether it is constant or intermittent, and whether it changes with engine load. Note unusual sounds, smoke, temperature warnings, and recent maintenance. These details help a technician understand the complaint; they do not by themselves identify the failed part.
- Arrange vehicle-specific diagnosis if the fault persists or returns. Preserve any diagnostic trouble codes and give the shop your observations. Do not clear codes before they have been recorded, replace the turbo based only on low power, or perform loaded tests on public roads.
There is no single driver-level test sequence that applies to every turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The safe next step depends on the warning, symptoms, vehicle design, and instructions in its manual. If the vehicle remains unsafe or a warning directs you to stop, do not continue a trip just to see whether the power comes back.

Why a turbocharged engine may lose power
The turbocharger is one element in a system that has to move air and exhaust, control boost, and deliver fuel while the engine-management system monitors operating conditions. In an Audi bulletin for a 2009 Q7 3.0L diesel turbo, the controller may reduce engine performance after recognizing boost pressure that is too high or too low. In that application, reduced-power or limp behavior is a response—not proof that the turbo itself is the failed component. The bulletin is dated March 25, 2013, and applies to particular faults on that vehicle, not to every turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Audi service bulletin 2024344/2.
This distinction matters: “the engine has reduced performance” describes what the driver experiences, while a code or warning describes what the vehicle’s systems recorded. Neither statement, on its own, confirms which component failed. A boost-related fault may involve the turbo mechanism or the surrounding air path and controls; other systems can also cause a loss of performance. Diagnosis must connect the complaint to evidence from the exact vehicle.

Intake and charge-air path
Restricted intake flow, loose or damaged boost pipes, and leaks or restrictions in the intercooler and charge-air plumbing can interfere with the air reaching the engine. Audi and Dodge/Ram service information identify faults in these areas as possible contributors to boost-related problems. Finding a leak or restriction requires the appropriate inspection and, where called for, vehicle-specific testing; low power alone does not tell you which component is involved.
The intake and charge-air path includes more than the turbocharger itself. Air passes through connected components and pipes, so a fault in that route can affect the air delivered to the engine even when the driver’s first suspicion is the turbo. Conversely, the presence of a boost-related code does not establish that a pipe, intercooler, or turbocharger must be replaced. The cited procedures are examples of possible fault areas, not a universal parts checklist.
Boost control and turbo mechanism
Boost may be too low or too high, and possible causes in the cited applications include boost-control faults, a wastegate or actuator problem, or a stuck adjustment or variable-geometry component. The correct interpretation depends on the vehicle’s design, trouble codes, and test results. The Dodge/Ram procedure, for example, is for a 2008 Ram 2500 with a 6.7L diesel—not a universal repair guide. Dodge/Ram boost-pressure procedure.
Low boost and high boost are not interchangeable findings, and the same driver complaint does not tell you which one is present. A technician needs to interpret codes and test results within the applicable service information. Avoid assuming that a particular noise, intermittent symptom, or reduced-power mode is a definitive turbo diagnosis; the sources do not provide a universal symptom-to-part rule.
Exhaust path
Exhaust leaks or damage around the manifold and connecting pipe, and excessive exhaust restriction, are also listed among possible fault areas in the cited service material. These are alternatives to investigate, not diagnoses that can be made from a power-loss symptom.
Because the turbocharger is part of the path for both intake air and exhaust flow, a problem elsewhere in the exhaust route can be relevant to a boost complaint. That does not mean every power-loss case requires exhaust work. The particular suspected fault should be supported by inspection or testing rather than inferred from the general symptom.

Fuel, ignition, cooling, and electrical systems
Power loss is not limited to air and boost faults. The 2024 Polaris RZR Turbo R owner manual lists fuel supply or quality, ignition, low battery voltage, and overheating among possible loss-of-power causes for that powersports vehicle. That list illustrates how other systems can matter; it is not a passenger-car repair procedure. 2024 Polaris RZR Turbo R owner manual.

Keep the source context in mind: the Polaris manual covers a powersports vehicle, while the Audi, Dodge/Ram, and Ford material covers particular passenger-vehicle applications. Together, they show why “turbocharged six-cylinder” is not enough information to identify a cause. They do not establish which fault is most common, how likely any one cause is, or which repair is appropriate for your car.
How to prepare for an accurate diagnosis
Bring the vehicle identity and warning details
- Make, model, model year, engine variant, and market.
- The full dashboard message and any warning lights.
- When the problem began and whether it occurs consistently or only under particular conditions.
- Any unusual sound, smoke, overheating indication, or recent maintenance.
These details matter because the available service documents cover different vehicles and engine variants. Exact warning responses, code meanings, and test procedures cannot be specified without identifying your vehicle.
Be as specific as you can without trying to recreate the problem. For example, note whether the power loss began suddenly or developed over time, whether it has happened once or more than once, and whether it seemed to change with engine load. These are useful descriptions of the complaint, not DIY tests or proof of a particular failure. Do not accelerate hard or conduct a loaded public-road test to collect more information.
Also mention maintenance or repairs that took place shortly before the symptom appeared. This does not prove that recent work caused the issue, but it gives the technician relevant context when reviewing the complaint and deciding what vehicle-specific checks to perform.

If a warning or scan result is available, preserve its exact wording and the codes for the diagnostic appointment. Clearing codes before they are recorded can discard information that may help with diagnosis. A basic reader may show some codes, but a code is not a parts order: the Ford bulletin is an example of a specific condition that calls for further checks rather than a general replacement instruction.
A compatible consumer OBD-II reader may help capture basic codes before an appointment, but do not assume a basic reader can reproduce the service data or tests described in a manufacturer procedure, or identify a failed component. Confirm compatibility with the vehicle. Leave interpretation and further testing to someone using the correct service information and equipment.
There is no universal code list or scan procedure to recommend here because the vehicle’s make, model, year, engine variant, and market are not specified. The Ford bulletin covers particular 2003–2004 vehicles, and its checks are not a substitute for the applicable procedure on another vehicle. A diagnostic shop should use service information appropriate to the vehicle being examined.

The Dodge/Ram service procedure warns that if oil is found on the turbocharger side, oil must be checked for and cleaned from the charge-air cooler before starting; failing to do so can cause severe engine damage. This is a warning tied to that service procedure, not a reason for an untrained driver to dismantle a hot turbo or charge-air system. A qualified technician should follow the applicable procedure for the exact vehicle.
That warning is a useful example of why turbo-related work should not be improvised from a general article. A detail that is critical in one procedure does not establish that every vehicle has the same layout or requires the same action. If inspection or repair involves the turbocharger, charge-air cooler, or other components, use the correct service documentation and appropriate expertise.
When the problem is urgent—and when it still needs attention
Stop as soon as safely possible when the vehicle feels unsafe to operate or a serious warning calls for stopping under the owner’s manual. Smoke, overheating indications, or unusual mechanical sounds are important observations to report; this broad guidance cannot determine whether a particular car may safely be driven. Consult the matching manual and seek appropriate help rather than relying on a generic rule.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge a proposed repair
Before approving a turbocharger replacement or another major repair, ask what finding supports it. A sound diagnosis should connect the complaint to the vehicle’s codes and relevant inspection or test results, and should confirm the fault rather than infer it from low power alone. The possible fault areas in the cited Audi, Dodge/Ram, and Ford procedures show why the symptom is not enough to choose a part.
You can ask the repairer which trouble codes were found, what inspection or tests were performed, and how those findings support the proposed repair. The point is not to prescribe a particular test: manufacturer procedures differ, and the right checks depend on the exact vehicle. A clear explanation should distinguish a confirmed finding from a possibility that still needs investigation.
There is no universal repair recommendation or ranking for this symptom without the vehicle identity and diagnostic results. The sources offer no suitable prevalence statistic for causes of power loss in turbocharged six-cylinder engines, and they do not provide a basis for quoting a typical repair price. Costs depend on the confirmed fault and the vehicle; obtain an estimate based on diagnosis rather than treating a generic turbo replacement estimate as applicable.
Use the correct owner manual for immediate instructions and the manufacturer’s service information for diagnosis; the Ford manual page specifically cautions that online owner-manual information may vary by vehicle and market. Ford owner manuals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does reduced power mean the turbocharger has failed?
No. Reduced power can be an engine-control response to boost pressure that is too high or too low, as described in a bulletin for a specific Audi application. Intake or charge-air faults, boost control, exhaust issues, and other systems may also be involved. Codes and vehicle-specific test results are needed before identifying a failed part.
Can I keep driving if my turbocharged six-cylinder engine loses power?
There is no universal answer for every vehicle. If the car feels unsafe or a serious warning tells you to stop, follow the matching owner’s manual and stop as soon as it is safe. Avoid hard acceleration, and arrange diagnosis if the loss of power persists or returns. The reviewed Ford instruction applies to its specific limited-power warning, not every car.
Will an OBD-II code tell me which part to replace?
Not by itself. A code can help direct an investigation, but it does not prove that a particular component has failed. A compatible consumer reader may capture basic codes, while further interpretation and testing may require vehicle-specific service information and equipment.
What information should I give the repair shop?
Provide the make, model, year, engine variant, and market; the exact warning text and any recorded codes; when the loss began; whether it is constant or intermittent or changes with load; and any unusual sounds, smoke, overheating indications, or recent maintenance. These details help describe the complaint but do not diagnose it.
Is there a standard repair cost for this problem?
No reliable universal estimate can be given without vehicle identity and diagnostic results. Power loss can involve several different systems, and the reviewed sources do not provide a typical repair price. Ask for an estimate based on the confirmed fault.
The Bottom Line
Ease off the accelerator, follow the correct owner’s manual, and stop safely if the vehicle feels unsafe or a serious warning requires it. Record the warning and symptoms, preserve any codes, and arrange vehicle-specific diagnosis if the problem persists or returns. Low power alone does not prove that the turbocharger needs replacement.
