First identify the legal company responsible for each promise: the tire manufacturer, the seller, or a separate road-hazard plan administrator. Then submit the claim under the written terms, preserve evidence and deadlines, and ask the seller and any named administrator for written directions if the manufacturer is unavailable.
What happens to a tire warranty if the manufacturer shuts down?
There is no single answer for every closure. A store closing, a tire line being discontinued, customer service stopping, and a formal bankruptcy or liquidation are different events. A closure by itself does not establish that coverage transferred, was cancelled, or can still be collected in practice. The written warranty, the identity of its warrantor and administrator, the nature of the closure, and applicable law all matter.
Start by separating the promises attached to the tire. A manufacturer’s limited warranty may cover specified materials or workmanship issues or provide a treadwear adjustment. Road-hazard protection may instead be offered by the tire maker, retailer, or a separate plan provider. Costco’s published terms make this distinction explicit: “This warranty does not replace or modify any original tire manufacturer’s warranty on material and workmanship.” (Costco road hazard warranty)
Who should I contact if the tire company is out of business?
Use the paperwork to identify the legal issuer of each coverage promise, not just the brand printed on the tire. Look for the warranty booklet, receipt, invoice, road-hazard certificate, service-contract agreement, and any claim registration. Record the warrantor’s and administrator’s legal business names, then contact the seller or installer and the administrator named in the relevant document. The FTC’s consumer guidance says, “If you have a problem with a product contact the seller.” (FTC, Warranties)

If the manufacturer is unavailable, ask the seller and any named administrator to confirm in writing where and how to submit the claim, whether they can inspect or process it, and whether the agreement identifies a successor or backup administrator. Send a dated written claim to the named warrantor using any method required by the warranty, and keep proof of delivery. FTC guidance recommends retaining warranty and purchase records and describes certified mail with a return receipt as one way to document delivery.
How to prepare and submit the claim
- Classify the problem. Establish whether you are claiming a material or workmanship defect, a treadwear adjustment, road-hazard damage, or benefits under a separately purchased service contract. Different promises can have different issuers, exclusions, and claim routes.
- Check the terms that applied to your purchase. Review the purchase-date and product-line rules, original-purchaser and vehicle requirements, time and tread limits, inspection requirements, authorized-dealer rules, exclusions, and the promised remedy—such as repair, replacement, reimbursement, or store credit. Use the version of the contract that applies to your purchase date; current online terms may have changed.
- Keep evidence together. Save dated photos of the tire and damage, the receipt and policy, tire identification including DOT markings, vehicle and installation details, tread-depth readings, rotation and maintenance records, inspection notes, claim numbers, and messages. A tread-depth gauge can help document a reading, but the applicable terms and the warrantor’s inspection determine eligibility.
- Do not discard the tire before checking. Ask the issuer or dealer whether an inspection is needed and retain the tire until they confirm it is not. Do not put off a safe repair merely to preserve a claim; ask the administrator what evidence it needs and keep invoices and removed parts when practical.
- Escalate with a clear record. If the responsible business does not respond, keep your communications factual: identify the promise, its issuer, when you made the claim, and the response or lack of response. FTC guidance points consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the state attorney general for unresolved problems. A complaint does not itself guarantee replacement or payment.

- Dunlop: Its listed road-hazard program covers qualifying damage within two years of purchase or within the first 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) of tread wear, whichever comes first, subject to other conditions. The tire must be returned to an authorized Dunlop dealer for inspection, and coverage is limited to specified replacement tire lines. (Dunlop warranty)
- Hankook: Its U.S. warranty page links a 2026 booklet and says qualifying non-repairable road-hazard damage may qualify for a replacement tire; service and labor costs remain the customer’s responsibility. (Hankook warranty)
What if the closure involves bankruptcy or liquidation?
Formal insolvency is a separate issue from a company merely ending customer service or closing a product line. If official notices identify a bankruptcy trustee, receiver, liquidator, or claims administrator, follow the official case instructions and deadlines. The available facts cannot establish creditor priority, filing deadlines, successor liability, or likely recovery for an unspecified company and case; those depend on the actual proceeding and jurisdiction. For a substantial claim, get advice specific to that case.

Federal warranty law provides rules about written warranties and service contracts, but it does not create a universal rule for what happens when a tire manufacturer closes. The FTC’s overview of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act discusses disclosure standards, standards for full warranties, limits on disclaimers of implied warranties, and remedies for breach of warranty or service-contract obligations. Whether a particular tire claim fits a legal remedy depends on the actual promise, facts, amount, and applicable law. (FTC, Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act)

FTC consumer advice also says manufacturers generally cannot require branded parts or services as a condition of warranty coverage unless they provide them free or obtain an FTC waiver. That rule does not, by itself, decide whether a closure affects a claim or make a retailer responsible for another company’s promise. (FTC warranty-practice announcement, 2024)
