What to Do if a Mail Truck Camera Captures Your Home or License Plate

If a USPS mail-truck camera concerns you, document the time and location, contact the Privacy Office, and use FOIA only to seek existing records.

If you’re asking, “What should I do if a mail truck camera captures my home or license plate?”, start by recording when and where you saw the truck, then contact the USPS Privacy Office at [email protected]. A visible camera alone does not show that it recorded you, recognized a plate, or saved identifiable footage. If you want existing agency records, you can also submit a focused Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, but neither route guarantees that footage exists or can be released.

What to do first

  1. Write down what you observed. Note the date, approximate time, location, truck markings or description, and what the camera appeared to face. Stick to what you saw; a camera’s appearance does not establish that it was recording or using automated license-plate recognition.
  2. Contact the USPS Privacy Office. Email [email protected] with a concise description and your specific concern. USPS identifies this address for privacy questions, complaints, and reports of suspected privacy violations. Ask whether the described vehicle or program collected imagery, whether the incident can be identified, and what process applies to access, retention, or a complaint.
  3. Use FOIA if you are seeking existing records. Submit a request through the USPS FOIA request route or its linked portal. Give a narrow time and location and describe the vehicle as precisely as possible. You can request records concerning the camera system and incident, while recognizing that records may not exist, may not be associated with you, or may be withheld in whole or in part.
  4. Consider a Privacy Act request only if it fits. If USPS says it maintains records about you in a covered system, consult its Privacy Act request guidance. Whether an image of a home or license plate is a covered, retrievable record is not established by the available USPS material.

Do not tamper with or obstruct a postal vehicle or its equipment. Use the agency’s privacy and records processes instead.

Which USPS route fits your goal?

Route What it is for What it does not establish
USPS Privacy Office Privacy questions, complaints, and reports of suspected privacy violations; contact [email protected]. It does not, by itself, confirm that a camera recorded an incident or that footage is available.
FOIA Requesting existing federal agency records that are reasonably described. It is not a general question-and-answer or remedy process, and exemptions may restrict disclosure.
Privacy Act Rights concerning covered records about the requester, including review and requests for correction or amendment. It does not mean every street image is a covered record or can be retrieved.

The USPS Privacy Office says its email address is “dedicated to responding to privacy questions, privacy complaints, and reporting of suspected privacy violations.” The United States Postal Inspection Service explains that FOIA permits access to agency records, “not information or remedying.”

What is known about mail-truck cameras and imagery?

A camera being visible does not prove that it recorded a particular home or plate, identified a household, or retained an image. The reviewed USPS materials do not answer those questions for a specific truck or incident, and they do not establish a current nationwide mail-truck image-capture program or retention period for roadside imagery.

  • SONY STARVIS 2 IMX675 SENSOR + SUPER NIGHT VISION: The front camera uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP image sensor with a wide F1.5 aperture (F1.8 rear) and HDR to pull in more light for clearer low-light footage. This advanced sensor enhances nighttime clarity, helping capture license plates, road signs, and surrounding vehicles with greater reliability when driving after dark, through tunnels, or in dusk and dawn conditions.

  • CAR CAMERA WITH GPS: The new front and rear dashcam comes with built-in GPS, which enables you to view real-time live speed and compass on the 3” IPS wide camera screen. It records precise driving routes, locations, and speed stamps directly on the video so you can watch dashcam videos with GPS data using ROVE's free GPS Player on your PC or Mac & get additional evidence when you need it.
  • FEATURES WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY INCLUDED: Experience peace of mind with this front and rear car dash cam. It comes with a free 128GB microSD card and offers advanced features such as an f1.5 aperture, motion detection, G-sensor, seamless loop recording, emergency video lock, screen saver, live speed and compass direction, voice guidance, ring of threads for optional CPL filter, a built-in supercapacitor for extended product life, support for up to 1TB microSD cards, and many more.

One limited historical example: in a February 1, 2021 employee-news item, USPS reported a test in Mountain View, California, in which three vehicles carried equipment to capture 3D street imagery. USPS said faces and license plates were blurred or erased. That test does not establish current fleet-wide use or how another camera system handles images. See the USPS report on the Mountain View test.

USPS describes its Privacy Act rights as including reviewing records about oneself, learning whether covered records have been disclosed, and requesting correction or amendment. Those rights apply to covered records under applicable system rules; they are not evidence that a street image exists or is retrievable. Likewise, a USPS privacy-assessment page describes assessments of privacy and security requirements for IT systems, but does not identify a current mail-truck image system or disclose a retention rule for a particular roadside image. See USPS privacy information.

A separate retention schedule should not be treated as an answer about truck-camera footage. The January 2025 AS-353 handbook excerpt describes a two-year period for the Vehicular Violations Records System, involving vehicle operators and citations on USPS premises; it does not establish retention for delivery-truck camera imagery. See the AS-353 handbook excerpt.

  • Date and approximate time, including your time zone if relevant.
  • Street address or precise location and direction of travel, if known.
  • Truck markings, vehicle description, or other identifying details you observed.
  • What the camera appeared to face and what specific concern you want addressed.
  • For FOIA, a clearly bounded description of the records sought, such as records about imagery collection by the identified vehicle at that place and time.

FOIA concerns records and documents, not simply obtaining an explanation or remedy. The Postal Inspection Service advises that a request should reasonably describe the records sought. See the Postal Inspection Service FOIA guidance and the USPS FOIA FAQ. A narrower request is more useful to the agency than a broad demand for all video from an entire route or fleet, though specificity cannot guarantee that records exist or will be released.
