What to request before the test drive
- Ask the seller for the VIN, service booklet, invoices, warranty documents and any extended-warranty paperwork.
- Check whether dates and odometer readings in the records are consistent, and compare maintenance entries with the applicable Hyundai schedule. Scheduled replacements help assess whether maintenance was kept up; they do not certify that a component is currently in good condition.

Choose a quiet route with ordinary changes in road surface and drive at low, lawful speeds. You do not need abrupt turns, hard acceleration or high-speed manoeuvres to look for warning signs. Note when a sound or sensation occurs—such as while turning, crossing a small road irregularity or moving straight ahead—so the mechanic has useful context.
- Steering: Notice unusual noise, excessive play, binding or uneven effort, pulling, vibration, or steering that does not return consistently after a normal turn.
- Suspension and underbody: Listen for clunks over ordinary bumps and note any visible fluid leak, damaged boot, loose-looking part or tyre-wear pattern. A sound alone cannot identify which joint, bush or mounting point is responsible.
- Tracking: Pay attention to whether the car travels straight on a suitable, level stretch without you having to constantly correct the steering. Road camber and tyre condition can also affect how a car tracks, so have concerns checked rather than assigning a cause from the drive alone.
Write down the symptom, where it seems to come from, when it happens and whether it is repeatable. For example, note whether a clunk occurs over a road irregularity or whether a steering noise appears while turning. A clear description is more useful to an inspector than a broad claim that “the steering is bad.” Do not attempt to diagnose a steering or suspension fault by crawling under an unsupported car or by provoking the symptom with risky driving.

If the symptom makes the car feel unsafe to control, do not continue the test drive just to gather more evidence. Ask the seller to arrange a professional inspection. The test drive is only an initial screen: it can reveal a concern worth investigating, but it cannot confirm the condition of hidden joints, bushings, linkages or mountings.
Check a manual Exter’s clutch and gear selection

Ask the inspector to record findings on the steering gear or rack, steering linkage and boots, front suspension joints and bushings, related mounting points, and underbody condition. Ask them to identify what is confirmed, what is only suspected, and what should be monitored. Keep any confirmation or warranty paperwork with the vehicle records and check the applicable terms directly rather than relying on a seller’s summary. A remaining warranty can affect the value of a candidate car only after Hyundai confirms that it applies to that VIN and has transferred as required.
