On a new electric vehicle’s U.S. window sticker, start with the EPA Fuel Economy and Environment label: confirm the vehicle type, then compare range, electricity use, charging time and estimated energy costs. These are standardized estimates for comparing vehicles—not guarantees of what you will get on your routes, with your electricity rate or using your charging setup.

The label is most useful when you read its figures together and pay attention to their assumptions. A range estimate helps you assess distance, kWh per 100 miles gives a direct view of electricity consumption, MPGe supports comparisons across fuel types, and the charging-time figure depends on a specified power supply. None answers every ownership question, but together they give you a consistent starting point.

First, confirm what kind of vehicle the label describes

Check that the label identifies the vehicle as electric. A non-plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid is identified as a gasoline vehicle because it cannot be plugged in; do not assume every vehicle with an electric motor has the same label or charging details. The EPA explains the electric-vehicle label fields in its text version of the electric vehicle label.

This label is about fuel economy, energy use, range and environmental information. It does not establish the vehicle’s sticker price, tax incentives, battery warranty or crash-test results. Check those separately rather than treating them as part of the EPA label. In particular, a fuel-economy and environment label is not a crash-safety evaluation; do not use it as a substitute for a separate safety check.

It also helps to identify exactly which vehicle the label belongs to. When comparing labels, match model year and configuration as closely as possible. The figures on one label describe that vehicle and configuration; do not assume they automatically apply to every version in a model lineup.

What does MPGe mean?

MPGe means miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent. It puts the energy in electricity on a common basis with the energy in gasoline, allowing shoppers to compare vehicles that use different kinds of fuel. It is not the number of miles the EV can travel on a gallon of gasoline, nor a direct reading of how much electricity the car will use at home.

For electricity consumption, look alongside MPGe for the label’s kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (kWh/100 miles). That figure expresses electricity use more directly: all else equal, fewer kWh per 100 miles means less electricity used to cover the same distance. EPA’s MPGe method accounts for energy lost through the charging cable and onboard charger, so MPGe and the electricity-use figure serve related but different comparison purposes. EPA describes the label and its interactive fields in its interactive electric vehicle label and explains testing in Fuel Economy and EV Range Testing.

When comparing two EVs, do not read a higher MPGe as a guarantee of a lower bill or longer range on every trip. MPGe is the useful common energy-equivalence measure; kWh per 100 miles is the closer match to electricity consumed over a distance. The label’s estimated energy costs, in turn, use stated assumptions. Each number answers a different question, so consider them together rather than expecting one to stand in for the others.

How far can this EV go on a charge?

The range figure estimates the approximate combined city-and-highway distance a fully charged vehicle can travel before it needs recharging. EPA describes combined fuel-economy calculations as a weighted average of 55% city and 45% highway driving. That is a standardized calculation, not a prediction that your own driving will follow that split. The label’s stated range is an estimate tied to that standardized approach.

Use range to decide whether a vehicle appears to fit your regular routes and charging opportunities, not as a promise about a specific trip. Actual efficiency and range can change with driving style, weather, road and traffic conditions, vehicle load, maintenance, air conditioning and other accessories. A route with sustained high speeds, cold weather or heavy heating and cooling use may differ from the standardized conditions behind the estimate.

For a practical first pass, think about the routes you expect to drive and where you can recharge, then compare that use with the label range. The figure can help you screen whether a vehicle appears to suit your needs, but it cannot tell you exactly how much range you will have on a particular day or route. Your driving pattern and conditions matter, and the label is not a guarantee of real-world performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful comparison, compare the same model year and, where possible, the same configuration. A label for one configuration should not automatically be treated as the range for every version of that vehicle. If you are weighing two different vehicles, compare their combined-range figures alongside their energy-use figures and your own expected driving, rather than choosing solely by whichever label shows the larger distance.

How long does it take to charge?

The label’s charge-time estimate assumes charging a fully empty battery using 240-volt service. It is not a universal time for every charging session: starting with a partly charged battery, using a different voltage or charging under different conditions changes the practical result. EPA specifically notes that using lower voltage than the label specifies results in longer charging times.

Before relying on the number, check the vehicle maker’s complete charging specifications and compare them with the charging equipment and electrical service you expect to use. A compatible 240-volt Level 2 home charging station is relevant to the label assumption, but the label does not say that a station is included, and buying a station by itself does not guarantee the label’s charging time. Confirm vehicle compatibility and whether your home electrical setup is suitable.

Read the assumption as carefully as the time figure itself. If your intended charging setup does not match the label’s 240-volt assumption, the printed time is not an apples-to-apples description of that setup. In particular, lower-voltage service takes longer according to EPA. Ask the vehicle maker for its complete charging specifications and consider whether your home electrical service and any equipment you plan to use fit those specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer from the label alone that you need to purchase a particular charger, that one is included with the vehicle, or that installation is simple. The label gives an estimate under a stated service assumption; it does not establish equipment inclusion or home electrical suitability. Treat the charging figure as a comparison point and verify the details for the vehicle and setup you are considering.

How much will it cost to charge?

The label’s annual and five-year energy-cost figures are estimates based on assumptions printed on the label. They are useful for comparing vehicles on a consistent basis, but they are not a bill forecast for your household. Your electricity price and driving habits affect your actual cost.

Use the EPA’s consumer comparison resources to personalize estimates with your own information. The interactive label can help you explore the fields; EPA also provides information about electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. For a fair comparison, use the same assumptions for each vehicle before adjusting the figures to reflect your circumstances.

When reading the cost figures, look for the printed assumptions rather than treating the annual or five-year number as a quote. The standard estimate can make two labels easier to compare on the same basis. Once you have made that comparison, personalize it with your electricity price and expected driving habits using EPA’s consumer tools. This separates the label’s standardized comparison from an estimate tailored to your circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MPGe alone does not tell you your household’s charging cost. Use the energy-cost figures for the label’s cost comparison, and use your own information to refine the estimate. If two vehicles have different range, electricity-use and cost figures, consider which aspects matter for your driving and charging routine rather than reducing the decision to a single number.

Check the ratings, emissions information and QR code

Review the label’s fuel-economy and greenhouse-gas ratings and its emissions information as part of the same comparison. Scan the QR code or visit FuelEconomy.gov to explore more information and personalized comparisons. EPA’s guide to the fuel economy label explains the broader label context.

The QR code is a route to more information, not a replacement for reading the printed figures and their assumptions. Use it, or visit FuelEconomy.gov, when you want to explore additional label information or personalized comparisons. For broader comparisons, EPA’s interactive label and consumer resources can help you look beyond the sticker’s standardized estimates.

Do not use this label as a substitute for a separate crash-safety evaluation. Fuel economy and environmental label information answers different questions from crash-test results. Likewise, do not expect this EPA label to settle sticker-price, incentive, battery-warranty or dealer-add-on questions; those are separate purchase checks.

Compare two EV stickers without fixating on one number

Put the figures together rather than choosing a vehicle based only on its highest MPGe or longest stated range. The most useful comparison depends on the driving you do and the charging you can access. Combined range, kWh per 100 miles, MPGe, charge time and estimated energy cost each add a different piece of information.

Label item What it helps you compare What to keep in mind
Combined range Estimated distance from a full charge before recharging It is a standardized estimate; real-world conditions and driving can change range.
kWh per 100 miles Electricity consumed to cover a set distance Useful for thinking about electricity use; your actual consumption can differ.
MPGe Energy-based comparison across vehicle technologies and fuels It is not a direct household electricity-use or charging-cost figure.
Charge time Estimated time under the label’s charging assumption The estimate assumes a fully empty battery and 240-volt service; lower voltage takes longer.
Annual and five-year energy costs Consistent estimated cost comparison Figures use printed assumptions; personalize for your electricity price and driving.

Use this order to keep the comparison practical:

  1. Match model year and configuration as closely as possible.
  2. Compare combined range against your usual routes and available opportunities to recharge.
  3. Compare kWh per 100 miles for electricity consumption, and use MPGe as the broader energy-equivalence measure.
  4. Check whether the charge-time estimate’s 240-volt assumption fits the charging service you intend to use.
  5. Compare estimated energy costs using the same assumptions, then personalize the comparison with your electricity price and driving habits.
  6. Review ratings and emissions information, and use the QR code or EPA comparison tools for additional detail.

If one label looks better on one measure but not another, keep the measures distinct. A range figure concerns approximate distance before recharging; kWh per 100 miles concerns electricity use over a set distance; MPGe puts energy on a common basis across fuels; and charge time depends on the label’s 240-volt charging assumption. The cost estimates are another comparison, but they rely on printed assumptions. The right reading is the combination that best matches your routes, charging access and electricity costs.

EPA’s text label explanation and interactive label provide ways to inspect the fields; its testing explanation gives context for the standardized figures. Use the official resources to inspect assumptions and explore personalized comparisons, while remembering that the printed estimate is not a promise about your individual results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does MPGe mean on an EV window sticker?

MPGe means miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent. It expresses energy on a common basis so shoppers can compare vehicles using different fuels, but it is not miles an EV can travel on a gallon of gasoline and is not a direct household electricity-use or cost figure. Check kWh per 100 miles for a more direct view of electricity consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How far can an EV go on a charge according to the label?

The label’s range is the approximate combined city-and-highway distance a fully charged vehicle can travel before recharging. EPA’s combined calculation weights city and highway driving at 55% and 45%, respectively. It is a standardized estimate, not a promise for a particular trip; driving style, weather, road and traffic conditions, vehicle load, maintenance, air conditioning and other accessories can affect actual range.

How long does the EV charge-time figure assume?

The label’s estimate assumes charging a fully empty battery with 240-volt service. A partly charged battery or a different charging setup means your actual session may differ, and EPA notes that lower voltage than specified on the label takes longer. Check the automaker’s complete charging specifications against your intended service and equipment.

Does the label tell me how much charging will cost at home?

It provides estimated annual and five-year energy costs based on assumptions printed on the label, not a bill forecast for your household. Electricity prices and driving habits affect actual costs. Compare vehicles using consistent assumptions, then use EPA consumer comparison tools to personalize the estimate.

Does an EV label show whether a home charger is included?

No. The 240-volt charge-time assumption makes a compatible Level 2 home charging station relevant to consider, but the label does not establish that a station is included or that buying one guarantees the stated time. Check vehicle compatibility and home electrical suitability separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the EPA EV label tell me about price, incentives, warranty or crash safety?

No. The label covers fuel economy, energy use, range and environmental information. It does not establish sticker price, tax incentives, battery warranty or crash-test results. Treat each as a separate purchase check.

The Bottom Line

Read an EV window sticker as a set of related estimates, not a single verdict. Match model year and configuration, compare range and kWh per 100 miles, interpret MPGe as an energy-equivalence measure, and check the 240-volt assumption behind charge time. Then review the printed cost assumptions, personalize them for your electricity price and driving, and use the QR code or EPA tools for more detail. The label is a useful comparison tool, but real-world range, charging time and energy cost depend on your vehicle, setup and use.
