Before paying a deposit, get the rental company’s written terms for the total cost, the car or category promised, permitted drivers and use, damage liability, cancellation, and charges after return. A reservation agreement may not contain every term that will govern you: the pickup rental contract and local law can also matter. Ask for the documents that apply to your specific booking and resolve any mismatch before paying.
Start by identifying the terms that govern your booking
Ask the company to send the reservation terms and the rental agreement you will sign at pickup, along with any damage-waiver or protection terms. Check whether the reservation confirmation incorporates separate terms by reference, and whether those terms can change before pickup. If a sales page, email, or phone conversation promises something important, ask to have it recorded in the booking documents or confirmed in writing by the company.

Rules depend on where the rental takes place and on the provider’s contract. Consumer guidance from New Zealand, Australia, and North Carolina and a Texas statute address different jurisdictions; none should be treated as a universal rule. New Zealand Consumer Protection advises renters: “Before you sign the contract, check your liabilities – what you’re covered for and what you’re not (exclusions).” Read the New Zealand guidance, but apply the law and contract for your own location.
Confirm the full price and what the deposit actually does
Do not compare bookings using only the advertised daily rate. Ask for an itemized estimate covering the rental period and the amount due at booking and pickup. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission recommends asking whether a deposit is required, when it may be forfeited, what charges may be put on a card, the circumstances and amounts involved, and when the security deposit is refunded. - Price: Get the base rental price, taxes, surcharges, mandatory products, optional products, and any other required fees itemized. Ask which optional products are already selected and how declining them changes the total.
- Deposit amount and method: Ask the exact amount and whether it will be a card preauthorization hold or a charge. A hold can still reduce available credit; do not assume it will disappear immediately.
- Release and deductions: Ask when the company initiates release, how long its process normally takes, what amounts it may deduct or charge, and how an open damage or fee dispute affects release.
- Payment-card rules: Confirm whether the card must belong to the main driver, which card types are accepted, and whether the requirements differ by vehicle group or protection choice. Do not assume debit cards or another person’s card will be accepted.
There is no universal sports-car deposit amount or refund timetable. As one narrow example, a Hertz Ireland terms page displays a €5,000 deposit or preauthorization under stated conditions for listed vehicle groups. That figure is specific to that page, rate, vehicle category, and booking conditions—not a typical or general deposit. Check the relevant Hertz Ireland terms only if that is the provider and location for your booking.
Get specific about the car, drivers, and permitted use
A reservation may promise a vehicle class rather than a particular make or model. Read the wording closely: “or similar” can leave the precise car open. Ask what class characteristics are guaranteed, what substitutions the company may make, and whether you can reject a replacement that does not meet the purpose of your booking. Get the remedy in writing—such as a right to cancel without penalty or a refund—if the promised category is unavailable.
Confirm every driver before booking. Ask about minimum and maximum age, licence history or type, additional-driver approval, and any surcharge. Make sure the agreement identifies all authorized drivers; do not assume another driver is covered just because they are present at pickup.

Ask what use the contract permits, especially if you plan to drive a high-performance car in ways that may be treated differently from ordinary touring. Clarify:
- Included mileage and the rate or calculation for excess distance.
- Permitted roads, territories, and cross-border travel.
- Whether track days, performance events, timed driving, off-road use, or other activities are prohibited.
- Any restrictions on where or how the vehicle may be parked, stored, or operated.
These details matter beyond convenience: a prohibited use or unauthorized driver may affect protection or liability under the particular agreement. The exact restrictions are provider- and location-specific; check the terms for the sports car you are booking rather than assuming ordinary-car conditions apply. Consumer guidance from New Zealand, Australia, and North Carolina all emphasizes reading the applicable contract and protection rules. New Zealand Consumer Protection, the ACCC, and the North Carolina Department of Justice offer jurisdiction-specific guidance.
Understand protection, exclusions, and your maximum exposure
Ask the company to explain in writing what protection is included in the quoted rate and what each optional waiver changes. “Damage waiver” is not enough of an explanation by itself. Find out whether the product is a contractual waiver, insurance, or something else, and what liability remains even after you buy it.

- What is the deductible or excess, and what is the maximum amount you could owe?
- Does protection address damage to the rental car, theft, third-party injury, or third-party property damage? Are these handled by separate products?
- What happens after a single-vehicle incident, vandalism, theft, or damage when another party is not identified?
- Are tires, wheels, glass, roof, underbody, keys, or interior damage excluded or treated differently?
- Can you be charged for loss of use, towing, recovery, storage, damage assessment, or administrative processing?
- Does the protection stop applying if a driver, territory, or activity violates the contract?
These are questions to put to the provider, not assumptions about how every rental agreement treats each item. Compare the included protection and each optional choice by the liability it leaves you with, its exclusions, and its price. A cheaper rate can carry a larger potential bill; a paid waiver may still have exceptions or a deposit requirement.

Ask the insurer or card issuer directly and keep the response. The ACCC specifically prompts consumers to consider gaps such as whether travel insurance covers a single-car accident. Do not infer that a policy covering ordinary rentals will also cover a high-value sports or exotic car.
A Hertz Ireland page illustrates why terms must be read at the booking level: for the displayed rate, collision damage waiver (CDW) may be optional or included depending on the rate, a security deposit may still apply, and declining protection may expose the renter to the vehicle’s value and related costs. Those are that page’s terms, not a universal description of rental protection. Review the applicable Ireland booking terms if they govern your reservation.

Law can also impose requirements on the agreement. For example, Texas Business and Commerce Code Chapter 91 provides for written agreement to a damage waiver and specifies notice language in covered circumstances, including that a waiver is not insurance. That is a Texas-specific example, not a rule to apply to rentals elsewhere. Read Texas Business and Commerce Code, Chapter 91.

Find the exact rules before you commit, including whether a prepayment is refundable. “Free cancellation” may depend on a stated deadline or booking condition; do not rely on a headline without checking the applicable terms.
- What is the cancellation deadline, and is the refund full or partial?
- Is there a cancellation fee, and what happens if you do not arrive?
- Can you change dates, pickup location, drivers, or vehicle category? Could a change reprice the booking or make the payment nonrefundable?
- Does returning the car early reduce the rental charge, or is the original period still payable?
- If the reserved class is unavailable, can the company substitute a different class, and can you refuse it without losing your deposit or prepayment?
- How and when will any refund be processed?
New Zealand Consumer Protection notes that cancellation charges may apply close to pickup and that the required notice depends on the provider’s terms. Check its rental-car advice, then use the specific deadline in your own agreement.

Map every possible charge after pickup or return
Ask for the charge schedule and the circumstances that trigger each fee. An agreement may authorize charges after the initial rental payment, so understand how the company can use the payment card on file and what documentation it will provide.
- Excess mileage and how distance is measured.
- Late pickup, late return, or extending the rental.
- Fuel or charging shortfalls and refueling or service fees.
- Cleaning, including the standard used to decide a special cleaning fee is justified.
- Tolls, traffic or parking fines, and any processing fee attached to them.
- One-way return, location changes, or recovery and towing.
- Damage assessment, repairs, loss of use, and administrative charges.
Ask whether the company may charge the saved card after return, while a claim is being assessed, or without first sending an invoice. Find out what evidence it will provide, how you can dispute an amount, and whether it will wait for your response before charging. The ACCC recommends asking which charges can be put on a card and when. Its car-hire guidance is Australian consumer guidance, not a universal card-charge rule.
A US rental agreement filed in an NHTSA investigation is an example of one operator’s language authorizing a deposit authorization and listing possible charges. It should be treated as an illustration of why to read the actual agreement, not as a standard term for other companies. NHTSA’s FOIA library.

- Request the booking documents. Obtain the reservation terms, pickup contract, protection/waiver terms, and fee schedule that apply to your location, dates, and selected car category.
- Reconcile the total. Write down the full rental price, amount due now and at pickup, deposit amount, hold-versus-charge method, potential deductions, and release process.
- Verify the booking promise. Confirm the car or class, substitution remedy, named drivers, eligibility, mileage, territory, and prohibited use.
- Compare liability choices. Record included cover, optional product prices, excesses, maximum exposure, exclusions, and ancillary costs. Verify outside insurance separately for this exact vehicle and trip.
- Mark the exit conditions. Note cancellation and change deadlines, no-show consequences, early-return rules, refund timing, and what happens if the provider cannot supply the category.
- Get unresolved answers in writing. Do not rely on an oral assurance about a material term. If the company will not confirm the term, decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable before sending money.
Document condition at pickup and return
At pickup, inspect the car with a staff member before driving away. Photograph all sides, bumpers, wheels, glass, roof and visible underbody areas, interior, dashboard, fuel level, and odometer. Ensure every existing mark or defect appears on the condition report and have the representative acknowledge the record. Keep copies of the signed rental agreement and inspection report.
At return, photograph the car again and request written confirmation of its condition. Keep the return receipt and any messages about damage, fuel, mileage, or extra charges. The ACCC recommends taking photographs and recording damage in the contract; New Zealand Consumer Protection recommends a written inspection report and photos. ACCC guidance and New Zealand guidance apply within their respective jurisdictions.
If a later damage charge appears incorrect, promptly dispute it in writing and preserve the pickup and return records, agreement, correspondence, and payment statements. New Zealand Consumer Protection describes possible dispute routes, including contacting the card issuer about chargeback where appropriate; whether that route is available or succeeds depends on the facts and applicable rules.
