Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before you buy, test the exact car you plan to take home, drive it in conditions close to your normal routine, and note anything unusual. A test drive can reveal how the car feels and whether key features work, but it cannot confirm that a used car has no hidden mechanical problems. For a used car, pair the drive with a VIN recall check, record review, independent inspection, and a careful review of the written sale terms.
Before the test drive
Confirm it is the right vehicle
Match the car in front of you to the listing and paperwork. Check the VIN and odometer reading, and make sure you are driving the specific vehicle you are considering—not simply another car of the same model. Record the mileage so you can compare it with the listing and available records.
Review records and recall status
For a used car, ask for its service records and a vehicle-history report. A report may show ownership and mileage information and may include accident or flood history, but it cannot reveal every mechanical issue. Treat it as one source of information, not proof of condition. The FTC explains the limits of history reports and recommends an independent inspection in its used-car buying guidance.
Check the VIN or license plate in the NHTSA recall lookup for unrepaired recalls associated with that vehicle. If a recall is open, ask the dealer whether the remedy has been completed or when it will be. NHTSA says recall repairs are available free through a local dealership. Check again close to purchase, since recall information can change.

Read the Buyers Guide and ask for a realistic route
Dealers must display a Buyers Guide on used cars offered for sale. It identifies whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty and describes major mechanical and electrical systems. Read it before you drive, and later confirm that it agrees with the sales paperwork. Put negotiated changes and material promises in writing. See the FTC’s explanation of the Buyers Guide and dealer sales terms.
Ask for a route that resembles your normal driving. Consumer.gov recommends testing in heavy traffic if that is how you usually drive; the North Carolina Department of Justice also recommends varied conditions such as highways, hills, and stop-and-go traffic. What the dealer permits and the applicable test-drive rules may limit the route. Consumer.gov’s car-buying guide and North Carolina DOJ’s used-car guidance offer practical advice on evaluating a vehicle.
What to check while driving
Drive normally, follow the dealer’s rules, and obey traffic laws. Do not try risky maneuvers to force a symptom to appear. Use a passenger or ask the salesperson to demonstrate a feature if checking it would distract you from driving.

Starting, moving off, and low-speed behavior
Notice whether the engine starts promptly and the car moves smoothly from a stop. Pay attention to hesitation, unexpected vibration, clunks, squeals, or other unfamiliar noises. If a sound or sensation appears, note when it happens rather than guessing at its cause.

Steering and tracking
Check that steering response feels predictable. On a straight, level road, notice whether the car seems to pull to one side. Road slope and wind can affect this observation, so a pull is a reason to ask questions, not a diagnosis of a particular fault.
Braking
In a safe, legal place, check whether the brake pedal feels consistent and the car responds predictably. Do not make abrupt stops or conduct an improvised emergency test on a public road. If braking feels uneven, noisy, or otherwise concerning, record the circumstances and have the vehicle assessed.

Acceleration and shifting
Accelerate in ordinary traffic and notice whether power delivery and gear changes feel consistent with the vehicle and your expectations. A short drive cannot establish the internal mechanical condition of the engine or transmission.
Visibility, comfort, and controls
Adjust the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors before setting off. Check whether you can see clearly, reach the controls, and sit comfortably. While parked where possible, test the features that matter to you: climate controls, lights, windows, infotainment, parking aids, cameras, and driver-assistance systems. Avoid operating distracting controls while the car is moving.

After the drive: investigate concerns before committing
Write down any warning light, odor, noise, vibration, steering or braking concern, or feature that did not work. Ask the salesperson to explain it, but do not treat an explanation as a substitute for an assessment when a problem remains uncertain.
For a used car, arrange an independent mechanical inspection before purchase with a mechanic you choose. Ask for a written report and repair estimates. The FTC notes that a safety inspection, which commonly focuses on whether a vehicle is unsafe to drive, is different from a broader mechanical inspection. A vehicle-history report or dealer certification does not replace an independent check. If the dealer will not permit an inspection, the FTC suggests considering another dealer.
Use the inspection results to decide whether to proceed, request repairs, or negotiate. A car that feels fine during a brief drive may still have hidden damage or mechanical problems.

Compare cars using the same checks
If you are considering more than one vehicle, use the same route where possible and keep notes in the same categories. That makes differences easier to spot without treating a quick drive as a verdict on mechanical condition.
| Comparison area | What to record |
|---|---|
| Fit for your routine | Visibility, comfort, traffic behavior, highway suitability, and passenger or cargo needs. |
| Observed operation | Unusual sounds or vibration, steering and braking feel, acceleration, shifting, and whether important features work. |
| Verified condition | Service records, vehicle-history information, recall status, and independent inspection findings. |
| Protection and terms | Buyers Guide status, warranty coverage, and any promises or negotiated changes in writing. |
| Total cost | Written out-the-door price, plus likely registration, tax, insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs. |
Before signing: confirm the price and terms
Ask the dealer for the total out-the-door price, including fees, in writing. For a used car, compare the Buyers Guide with the sales paperwork to ensure both show the same warranty coverage or “as is” status. Get agreed repairs, changes, and other material promises in writing.
Do not assume you can cancel a dealership car purchase within three days under a general federal cooling-off rule: the FTC says federal law does not require dealers to provide that general cancellation period. State rights vary, and some dealers offer a return policy voluntarily, so check the rules where you live and rely on the written terms.
