Mazda plans to pair a new in-house hybrid system with a 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-Z gasoline engine in the next-generation CX-5, targeting the model’s introduction by the end of 2027. That is a development target—not confirmation of a sale date in every country. Mazda’s broader strategy is to offer combustion, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains according to regional conditions, rather than rely on one solution.
What Mazda has announced for 2027
In its March 2025 Multi-Solution Briefing, Mazda described SKYACTIV-Z as a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine under development. The company plans to combine it with its proprietary hybrid system in the next-generation CX-5, with introduction targeted by the end of 2027.
“Targeted for introduction” describes Mazda’s plan; it does not establish when the vehicle will reach dealerships in a particular market. The cited materials do not give country-by-country launch dates.
What SKYACTIV-Z is—and what Mazda wants it to do
A gasoline engine designed for the electrification era
Mazda positions SKYACTIV-Z as a central engine in its lineup as vehicles electrify. The announced concept is an internal-combustion engine paired with a hybrid system, not a standalone battery-electric powertrain. Mazda says its aim is to balance fuel economy and driving performance while meeting stringent emissions requirements, including Euro 7 in Europe and LEV4 and Tier 4 in North America. Those are engineering targets, not evidence of certification or final production performance.

The combustion goal
In an official interview about the engine program, Mazda framed its ambition as efficient, clean combustion across engine and vehicle speed ranges without sacrificing power output. That is the company’s stated vision, not a published test result for a production vehicle.
The official materials cited here do not establish SKYACTIV-Z’s final horsepower, torque, fuel economy, hybrid architecture, or certified emissions figures. They also do not specify price, trim levels, or market availability. Those details should not be treated as settled until Mazda publishes production specifications.

Is Mazda developing its own hybrid system?
Yes. Mazda says it intends to use its proprietary hybrid system with SKYACTIV-Z in the next-generation CX-5. The available announcement does not explain the system’s components or operation, so it is too early to say how it will compare technically with other hybrid designs or what fuel economy it will deliver.
How the CX-5 plan fits Mazda’s wider powertrain strategy
Mazda calls its approach “multi-solution”: it plans to offer internal-combustion, hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and battery-electric vehicles to suit differences in energy supply, regulation, customer preferences and lifestyles across regions. Its 2025 strategy materials also describe an in-house battery EV planned for 2027 on a dedicated EV platform; a plug-in-hybrid derivative is under consideration, not confirmed as a production model.

Mazda Motor Corporation’s 2025 briefing estimates that its planned battery-EV development approach could reduce development investment by 40% and development workload by 50% compared with its conventional development process. These are company estimates about EV development—not measured savings from SKYACTIV-Z and not a vehicle’s fuel-economy or performance figures.
Where else Mazda expects to use the engine work
Mazda says combustion improvements developed for SKYACTIV-Z will be applied to inline-six engines for its large-product range and will inform a roadmap for rotary-engine emissions development. The briefing also says Mazda may consider applying elements of its hybrid system to large-platform products. The inline-six and rotary references concern related development work; they do not announce specific vehicles or confirm that those products will use the CX-5 hybrid system.
