Before paying to pre-book an upcoming motorcycle in India, get the booking terms and receipt in writing. Confirm exactly what is reserved, whether the amount is refundable and adjustable against the purchase price, whether the price or delivery date is guaranteed, and what steps and payments will be required after launch. A pre-booking may record your interest or reserve a place in a process; it does not necessarily complete a purchase or guarantee a motorcycle.
What a pre-booking does—and does not—promise
A pre-booking is an early reservation made before a motorcycle is launched or generally available. Its practical value depends on the actual program terms: it might provide priority in a later allocation process, or simply record your interest. Do not treat the word “booking” as proof that a specific motorcycle has been allocated to you.

Checklist: what to confirm before paying
1. Who is taking the booking?
Verify that the website, app, or dealership is authorized by the manufacturer. Check the legal name of the entity receiving payment and confirm it matches the booking terms and payment instructions. Save the official booking page, terms, confirmation, and receipt with the date visible. If you are booking through a dealer, make sure the confirmation identifies the same dealer or booking channel you were told to use.
2. What exactly is reserved?
Record the announced model name, proposed variant, color, city, and dealership. Ask which details are confirmed and which could change after launch. Find out whether you can change the variant or color later, and whether a change would preserve your place or require cancellation and a new booking. Honda’s published terms, for example, say online bookings cannot be changed online; a change requires cancellation and a fresh booking. That policy applies to Honda’s program only. 3. What does the amount due now cover?
Get the exact amount in writing. Ask whether it is a reservation amount or an advance, whether it will be credited toward the purchase price, and whether it secures priority or only registers interest. Confirm whether any additional payment is due to complete the booking. Do not assume that paying a stated amount guarantees allocation.

Ask what event makes the reservation complete or moves it to the next stage. A booking confirmation should make clear whether you have only recorded interest, entered a priority process, or need to take further action before the reservation is treated as a completed booking. If the terms do not explain this, request clarification before paying.
4. Can you cancel, and how does the refund work?
Check when cancellation is permitted, how to submit it, whether any amount may be retained, which entity processes the refund, and what event ends the cancellation window. Ask for the expected processing time and whether it is stated as a target or a commitment. Also ask whether cancellation can be requested through the original booking channel or must go through the dealership.

Honda’s online terms say, “You can cancel the booking before the vehicle is invoiced.” They also state that refunds are generally processed by the dealership within 7–10 working days. Both the cutoff and processing period are Honda-specific published terms; check the current terms for your own booking rather than assuming they apply universally. 5. Is any part of the price fixed?
Ask whether the booking locks a price or only reserves a place, and identify which price will apply at invoicing. Request an itemized estimate of the on-road cost in your city. Clarify what is included, such as accessories or other charges, and which items could change by delivery. Do not compare only the amount payable today. Compare the stated price basis and excluded charges as well, and ask whether the estimate is based on the currently displayed price or on the final dealership invoice. The final amount may depend on details that are not confirmed until later; get the seller to identify those uncertainties rather than assuming the early booking amount settles them.
6. What is the delivery commitment?
Ask for a written delivery window and whether it is an estimate or a guarantee. Confirm how you will receive updates, what the seller says will happen if launch or delivery is delayed, and whether the reservation can be transferred. A projected launch date or an informal dealer estimate is not a guaranteed handover date unless the written terms say so. If the delivery estimate changes, find out whether the seller will provide a revised window and what options, if any, the terms describe. Do not rely on a verbal assurance about launch timing when the written booking terms leave availability or delivery open. Ask how updates will reach you and keep those messages with your booking records.

7. What must you do after launch?
Ask for every post-launch step and its deadline: choosing a variant, confirming a color, adding or removing accessories, submitting documents, and paying the balance. TVS Motor Company’s pre-booking terms illustrate a staged process in which customers may need to select a variant after launch, add accessories, and pay the additional amount based on the final invoice to complete the booking and avail priority delivery. Ask what happens if you miss a deadline or do not accept the final invoice amount. Make sure you know whether the booking remains active, whether any priority position could be affected, and whether you can cancel at that stage. The answer should come from the applicable terms rather than an assumption based on another brand’s process.
8. What will be confirmed at final purchase and delivery?
Before completing payment and registration, compare the invoice with the agreed model, variant, and equipment. Ask the dealership to state the applicable warranty and service terms in writing. Ask what inspection is possible before completing the transaction and what the dealer’s process is; do not assume a particular inspection right or procedure applies to every booking.
Use the final paperwork to check that the purchase is for the configuration you selected and that any agreed equipment or accessories are reflected. Treat warranty, service support, and inspection arrangements as questions to resolve with the chosen dealer; the booking examples do not establish a universal policy on these points.
9. What evidence should you keep?
Keep dated screenshots or PDFs of the booking page, terms, displayed price, and any written dealer answers, as well as the confirmation and payment receipt. Preserve messages that explain what the booking amount buys, the delivery estimate, or any promise that differs from the standard terms. Save the terms that applied on the day you booked, not just a link to a page that may later change. Keep the payment proof and confirmation together with the written answers that mattered to your decision. This gives you a clear record of the amount paid, the entity that received it, the vehicle details discussed, and the process the seller described.
How to compare two pre-booking offers
Use the same written questions for each motorcycle. A low amount due now is not necessarily the better offer if its refund rules, price basis, delivery estimate, or later payment requirements are less clear.
- Amount due now, how it is applied, and refund or cancellation rules.
- Price basis, what the estimate includes, and which amounts may change.
- Delivery window, whether it is an estimate or guarantee, and stated steps if it slips.
- Model, variant, and color being reserved, including how changes are handled.
- Post-launch deadlines, documents, accessory choices, and balance payment.
- Written warranty and service terms for the final purchase.
Compare only what each seller has actually put in writing. The terms alone cannot establish which motorcycle will launch first or arrive sooner. When one offer is vague on cancellation, price, or delivery, treat that as an unresolved point to clarify rather than filling the gap with the other seller’s terms.

- Which model, variant, color, city, and dealership does this reservation cover?
- Is the amount refundable, when can I cancel, how do I request it, and who processes the refund?
- Will the amount be adjusted against the purchase price, and does it secure priority or allocation?
- Which price will apply at invoicing, what charges are excluded, and can the booking lock any part of the price?
- What delivery window is stated, and what happens if the launch or delivery is delayed?
- What must I do after launch, by when, and what additional payment or documents will be required?
- Can I change or transfer the reservation, and what happens to my place if I do?
- What warranty, service, and pre-delivery inspection arrangements will apply to the final purchase?
Save the answers with the booking documents. If an answer is important to your decision but is not in the published terms, ask for it to be included in the written confirmation. A short, specific answer in writing is more useful than a general assurance that the dealer will “sort it out” after launch.

Where to seek consumer assistance
The National Consumer Helpline lists online, app, UMANG, and WhatsApp grievance channels, as well as toll-free number 1915 and stated hours of 8 AM–8 PM. Contact details and operating hours can change, so confirm them on the current National Consumer Helpline site before relying on them. Keep your booking confirmation, receipt, terms, and relevant messages available if you seek information or raise a grievance.
A separate check when buying riding gear
If you are also shopping for a helmet, check that it bears the BIS Standard Mark and is marked to the applicable standard. BIS lists IS 4151:2015 as “Protective helmets for motorcycle riders – Specification.” The Government’s 2020 Quality Control Order specifies IS 4151:2015 and requires the Standard Mark for covered helmets from 1 June 2021.
