Before paying a booking amount, get the exact car, the dealership and payment recipient, an itemized dated quote, cancellation and refund terms, and the delivery estimate and balance-payment deadline in writing. Pay through the identified official booking route and keep the receipt and reference number. A receipt may confirm that money was received without proving that the dealer accepted the booking, that a car is allocated, or that the final on-road price is fixed.
The manufacturer terms cited below are for online booking in India. Policies can vary by brand, model, dealer, booking channel and jurisdiction; check the exact terms presented for your transaction before paying. The figures are examples from current terms pages, not universal rules, and should be rechecked for the vehicle and channel you are using.

Use this checklist before transferring money
Take a few minutes to match the car and the payment to the documents you will rely on later. If a detail is still undecided, ask the dealer to explain how a change affects the booking before you send money.

Check that the booking form or online summary describes the same specification you discussed. Ask whether changing the specification, colour or variant requires cancellation and a fresh booking, and whether that would affect your place in a queue or any offer.
- Identify the seller and recipient: Record the dealership’s name and address, its legal or trading identity, and the name of the entity receiving the money. A manufacturer’s website may facilitate a booking while the dealership handles the transaction. Confirm who will process a cancellation and refund, and whether that is the same party named on your receipt.
- Confirm the amount and payment channel: Check the amount shown on the official booking channel and ask whether any separate offline payment is being requested. The manufacturer examples below describe the booking amount as displayed during the online booking process. Ask how any separately requested amount will be recorded, and do not leave without a receipt for each payment. Retain the booking or payment reference.
- Get a dated, itemized quote: Ask for the on-road price breakdown and which figures are estimates. Confirm how invoice-date pricing, taxes and levies, insurance, registration, accessories and offers may affect the amount due. A single total can obscure which elements are included or could change before invoicing.
- Read the cancellation terms: Confirm the exact deduction, how and where to submit a request, whether an online booking must be cancelled online, what documents are required, how the refund is sent and the stated processing estimate. Ask whether the quoted period begins when you submit the request or when the dealer receives complete documents, if the terms explain that distinction. Do not assume your refund from another brand’s policy.
- Clarify what the booking confirms: Ask whether the receipt means only that payment was received, whether the dealer has accepted the booking, and whether a vehicle has been allocated. Ask how and when acceptance and allocation will be confirmed. A reference number is useful evidence of a transaction, but it is not necessarily confirmation of every step in the sale.
- Get delivery conditions in writing: Ask for the estimated delivery range, availability caveats and the deadline for paying the balance. Confirm the date or event that starts the deadline and the consequences if you miss it. Ask what happens if the estimate changes, whether you will be told before a vehicle is reallocated and whether an extension is possible.
- Document every promised extra: Put any offer, exchange benefit, finance condition, accessory bundle or free item in writing. Ask whether it remains valid if delivery is delayed or the invoice-date price changes, and whether eligibility depends on a particular payment, finance or delivery date.
What a booking receipt does—and does not—establish
Do not treat payment and acceptance as interchangeable. In its online booking terms, Hyundai says the payment acknowledgment and reference do not themselves constitute acceptance; the dealership must notify the customer of acceptance. The terms also describe the booking as binding only after the balance price and supporting documents are provided.

Honda Cars India’s terms similarly set conditions involving full payment and documents for a binding booking. Maruti Suzuki’s online booking terms describe a confirmation reference and receipt, with the booking amount applied to the purchase price. These are brand-specific terms, not a rule for every dealer or sale. Read the terms attached to your own booking and ask the dealer to state in writing what event makes it accepted and what event, if any, confirms allocation.
Before paying, distinguish among four possible milestones: the payment being received, the booking request being recorded, the dealer accepting the booking, and a particular vehicle being allocated. Do not assume one automatically means the others. If the dealer says the car is allocated, ask how that status will appear in a message or document and whether the allocation is tied to your chosen variant and colour.
Also check who actually holds or handles the funds. A booking page may be operated by the manufacturer while the chosen dealership manages the commercial transaction. Confirm the payment beneficiary and the party responsible for cancellation and refund before you pay. If a payment instruction differs from the official booking summary or the dealer identity you have verified, pause and clarify the discrepancy through the official channel.

A booking amount does not necessarily lock the final on-road price. Hyundai’s terms say the applicable specification and price, including levies, are those prevailing on the invoice date. Maruti says listed prices can change and the invoice-date price applies. Honda’s online booking FAQ describes its calculated quotation as indicative and says the invoice-date price is final. Ask the dealer for a dated, itemized quotation and identify which line items can change.
Compare quotes only when they cover the same make, variant and booking context. Check whether insurance, registration, accessories, offers and other charges are included, and ask how any change before invoicing will be communicated. If an offer is conditional or time-limited, get its eligibility conditions and expiry in writing rather than assuming that the booking preserves it. Ask the dealer to separate the booking amount already paid from the amount still payable, so it is clear how the token will be adjusted against the sale price.
Request answers to practical questions rather than relying on a headline figure: Is this quote an estimate or the final invoice amount? Which taxes or levies are included? Are insurance and registration shown separately? Are accessories optional or included in the quoted total? If the price changes before invoice, which date and price list will apply? The cited manufacturer terms make invoice-date pricing relevant, but they do not establish which charges or offers will apply to your particular purchase.

Compare cancellation and refund terms carefully
There is no single cancellation deduction or refund timeline established by these examples. The figures below are stated in the cited India-specific brand terms; page dates were not stated, and policies can change. They are examples to compare against the terms for your own model, dealer and booking route—not a general rule.

The Honda FAQ’s ₹21,000 amount is a platform-specific example and should be checked against the current booking page for the particular vehicle. Do not assume it applies to other models, dealers or channels. The terms pages also describe different cancellation routes: Honda requires an online cancellation request for online bookings, and Maruti requires online cancellation for vehicles booked online. Confirm the applicable procedure, required documents and refund route before paying.
Ask who receives the cancellation request and how you will know it has been recorded. Hyundai’s terms say a cancellation notice should include the booking form and receipt, and direct cancellation claims to the dealer. That is another reason to save those records and to get the dealer’s cancellation instructions before you need them. Confirm whether the refund goes to the original payment method or another destination, if the terms specify it, and whether any additional information is needed.
Do not compare a fee in isolation. A useful comparison includes the deduction, the channel for submitting cancellation, the documents requested, who processes the refund, where it is sent and the stated processing estimate. A processing estimate is not a promise that every booking will be refunded on precisely that date. Read the exact terms applicable to your transaction and ask for clarification if the wording or route is unclear.
Confirm delivery expectations and payment deadlines
An estimated delivery date is not necessarily a guarantee. Hyundai says expected delivery is confirmed by the dealer and depends on vehicle availability. Its terms also say missing the dealer’s deadline for balance payment can lead to reallocation and delay. Ask for the estimated range, what that estimate depends on, the date or event that triggers the balance-payment deadline, and the written consequence if you miss it or delivery slips.
Before committing, find out whether the dealer will notify you before reallocation, whether an extension is possible, and whether a delay affects any offer or quoted amount. Keep the answers with the booking documents so you can compare them with the receipt and terms. If the dealer cannot provide a firm date, ask for a realistic range and the conditions that could move it, rather than treating a verbal target as a guaranteed date.

Also establish when the balance becomes due and how the dealer will communicate that deadline. A deadline can matter even when delivery is not immediate: the cited Hyundai terms say missing it may affect allocation and cause delay. Get the applicable date, payment instructions and stated consequences in writing, and retain any later update if the estimate or deadline changes.
Keep these records together
Save a copy of the documents and messages before and after payment. A clear record helps establish what you selected, what was quoted and which cancellation process applies. Make sure the copies are readable and include dates, the dealership identity and the reference numbers.
- The signed booking form or the terms displayed at checkout.
- The dated, itemized quotation and any written offer or finance conditions.
- The payment receipt, transaction reference and booking ID.
- Written dealer confirmation of acceptance, allocation status, delivery estimate and balance-payment deadline.
- Cancellation instructions, required documents, refund destination and stated processing estimate.
- Any messages changing the quoted price, delivery estimate, offer conditions or payment deadline.
Hyundai’s cancellation terms ask customers to provide the booking form and receipt with a cancellation notice; Maruti’s online flow generates a confirmation reference and receipt. Follow the precise procedure attached to your transaction rather than relying on a verbal promise or another brand’s policy. Keep any confirmation that the dealer has received a cancellation request as well as the original request itself.

Keep the jurisdiction, model, variant and booking channel consistent, then compare the terms that can change the real cost or your options:
- Same dated, itemized on-road quote and the line items that may change.
- What the receipt confirms and how dealer acceptance or allocation is communicated.
- Who receives and holds the funds, and who handles cancellation and refund.
- Cancellation deduction, submission method, refund route and stated timing.
- Delivery estimate, availability conditions and balance-payment deadline.
- How a price change, delay or expiring offer is treated.
Compare like with like: the same make and variant, the same kind of booking route, and quotes issued for the same period. If you compare an online manufacturer booking with a separate dealer offer, note who is taking the money and whether the terms are different. A lower quoted total is not enough to decide if the inclusions, changeable line items or cancellation rules differ.
These India-specific manufacturer examples illustrate why cancellation deductions, refund estimates and invoice-date pricing are worth comparing. They do not establish terms for another brand, a different booking route or a sale outside India. Check the current written contract and local requirements that apply to your transaction.

Does paying a booking amount mean the dealer has accepted my booking?
Not necessarily. Hyundai, Honda and Maruti’s cited online terms distinguish payment or a booking reference from acceptance or a binding booking. Ask the dealer how and when acceptance is confirmed for your transaction, and keep that confirmation.
Does a booking amount lock the new car’s final price?
