Then have a qualified professional inspect the car and confirm that its safety systems, local road compliance and insurance are in order. Wider fenders alone prove none of these things.
Identify the car and the conversion
Start with the car, not the kit’s appearance. Record the VIN, model year, trim, body style and any performance or brake package. Ask who made the kit, which parts and part numbers were used, and whether the installation is complete. A “widebody” label does not establish a kit’s provenance, materials, workmanship or compatibility with that particular Mustang.
Find out which parts are original, replaced, cut, bonded, welded or repaired. In particular, establish whether the conversion uses bolt-on front fenders, cut rear quarters, replacement quarter panels or a combination. Ask for invoices, the installer’s identity, dated progress photos, alignment records, paint and bodywork receipts, and any engineering or inspection approvals. Check service history and recall completion using the VIN and the vehicle maker or relevant authority; no particular car’s recall status can be inferred without checking its VIN.
Operate the doors, bumpers, lamps and sensors, and check that normal service access remains usable. Missing paperwork is not proof of a bad conversion, but it leaves important claims unverified. If the seller cannot identify the parts or explain the work, budget for an independent inspection before committing.

Inspect the bodywork, seams and corrosion protection
Look across both sides for symmetry, consistent panel gaps and an even finish. Check for waviness, cracks, overspray, mismatched paint, loose or uneven fasteners, sharp exposed edges, water entry, filler or signs of previous collision repair. Inspect accessible backsides, wheelhouses and the edges behind the flares—not just the visible outer surface. A qualified body repairer should assess questionable seams or evidence of cutting.
A rear quarter is part of the body-side and unibody assembly. Cutting an outer wheel arch can expose or separate it from the inner wheelhouse, so a tidy exterior does not show whether the hidden joint is sound or protected. Ask the seller or installer for the written repair method, including what structure was retained, how panels were joined and closed, how drainage and the wheel liner were handled, and how primer, seam sealer, coatings and internal cavity protection were restored. If that method is unknown, have the area inspected rather than assuming the flare hides a harmless cosmetic change.

Verify the exact wheel, tire, brake and suspension fitment
Get the full specification for the parts fitted to this car. For each wheel, ask for its brand and model, diameter, width, offset, load rating, hub bore and fastener-seat type. For each tire, record the model, size, load rating and speed rating. Confirm how brake clearance and TPMS compatibility were checked. Do not transfer a fitment that works on another Mustang generation or trim to the car you are considering.
Ask for a fitment check on the actual car and its actual combination. It should cover both sides and assess clearance to the strut, damper, spring, control arms, tie rod, brake hoses, wiring, wheelhouse, flare fasteners and liner. The check should include expected suspension bump and droop, steering lock, and combined bump-and-steer positions, while accounting for tire sidewall and shoulder movement. Ask for the measured or documented clearance margin and any post-installation alignment and inspection records. A parked-car photo or a flare that extends farther outward cannot establish clearance through suspension travel.

Ask whether wheel offset changes or spacers were part of the setup and why. Changes in offset can affect steering feel and loads at the hub and bearing; a spacer is not a substitute for a wheel specified to fit the car. Have a qualified shop assess any setup whose fitment method or clearance is undocumented.
Ask what changed at the front end and check safety systems
Find out whether the front bumper, body structure, sensors, wiring or restraint-related areas were altered. Ford’s Mustang owner’s manual warns: “Modifying or adding equipment to the front end of your vehicle (including hood, bumper system, frame, front end body structure, tow hooks and hood pins) may affect the performance of the airbag system, increasing the risk of injury. Do not modify or add equipment to the front end of your vehicle.” Treat this as a reason to investigate front-end changes, not as proof that every conversion affects the airbags.

Request documentation of the work and any vehicle-specific procedures, and have a qualified Mustang repairer evaluate the car. Where fitted, ask the shop to verify relevant ABS, stability control, steering, TPMS, lighting, cameras, radar and parking sensors after conversion work. A dashboard with no warning lights does not prove that sensors are correctly positioned or calibrated.

Assess real-world clearance
Inspect the car’s actual ride height and approach and departure clearance. Consider the routes and access it will face, including ramps, speed bumps and recovery or towing access. Ford’s 2026 Mustang owner’s manual, edition date 202505, enGBR version, says of a body styling kit: “The distance between the underside of your vehicle and the ground is less than that of other models. Drive with extreme care to avoid damage to your vehicle.” This is a precaution for that manual’s body-styling-kit context, not a universal ground-clearance measurement for every widebody conversion or market. Check the manual that applies to the car’s year and market.

Confirm local compliance and insurance
Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so contact the relevant local authority before buying rather than assuming the car’s current registration settles the question. Ask how it measures vehicle width and whether the conversion affects requirements for tire tread or sidewall coverage, mud flaps, protrusions, lighting, reflectors, altered dimensions, inspection or engineering approval.
Tell the insurer about the body, wheel, suspension and performance modifications. Get written confirmation of coverage and ask specifically about the car’s declared or custom value, replacement parts, refinishing, track use and recovery. Do not assume an existing policy covers modifications simply because the car is already insured.
Compare an already-converted car with commissioning a build
Neither route is automatically better. An existing conversion can spare you the work of specifying and arranging a project, but you inherit its parts choices and workmanship. Starting with a stock Mustang gives you more control over the specification and records, while making you responsible for selecting qualified providers and managing the work. Compare the evidence available for each route rather than assuming a finished appearance means a finished job.

For either route, compare like with like: the exact year and trim, the intended use, the documented scope of work and the quality of the available inspection evidence. No universal cost, defect rate or resale premium is established here, so do not use an assumed conversion price or value increase as a substitute for a car-specific quote and appraisal.
Use a pre-purchase inspection to resolve uncertainties
Arrange an independent inspection with a qualified body repairer or Mustang specialist, especially if records are incomplete, the rear quarters appear cut, the front end has been changed, or wheel clearance is uncertain. Give the inspector the kit and wheel specifications, invoices and photos if available. Ask for a written report that identifies what was examined, any inaccessible areas, unresolved questions and repairs or further checks needed. This is particularly important where a seller’s explanation cannot be corroborated by records or inspection.
