Two campaigns deserve particular attention: a 2024 high-voltage battery fire-risk recall affecting certain vehicles and a 2026 engine recall report covering certain 2023–2025 models. Neither applies to every 4xe, so the individual vehicle’s current VIN record is decisive.
1. Check the VIN for open recalls before anything else
Ask the seller for the vehicle’s actual 17-character VIN and enter it in the NHTSA recall lookup. Check Jeep’s VIN and owner resources as well. A model-year search cannot tell you whether this specific vehicle is affected or whether a repair was completed. Request paperwork for completed recall work, then confirm the VIN’s status again shortly before purchase; NHTSA’s lookup covers unrepaired recalls and directs owners to follow any interim instructions and contact a dealer for repairs.

High-voltage battery fire-risk recall: 24V-720 / 24E-080
In an October 1, 2024 alert, NHTSA covered certain 2022–2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe vehicles in a plug-in-hybrid battery recall. Its alert described a combined population of 154,032 vehicles: 35,802 Grand Cherokee PHEVs and 118,230 Wrangler PHEVs. Those are dated, potentially involved counts across both models—not current counts, not Grand Cherokee-only totals, and not a failure rate. The remedy announced included a battery-pack control-module software update and battery inspection, with replacement if needed. Check whether the particular VIN was included and whether the remedy is documented as complete.

NHTSA’s interim direction for affected vehicles whose recall repair had not been completed was to park outside, away from structures and other vehicles, and not to charge until repaired. The agency stated: “Owners should park their vehicles outside and not charge them until they are repaired.” If the VIN shows this recall remains open, do not charge or store the vehicle contrary to that guidance; have the seller arrange repair and verify completion before proceeding. Engine recall report: 25V766 / manufacturer campaign 78C
A February 3, 2026 NHTSA report identifies certain 2023–2025 Grand Cherokee 4xe vehicles in campaign 25V766 / 78C. It lists 39,975 potentially involved vehicles and a production window from July 19, 2023 through April 10, 2025. The report says casting-sand contamination may cause catastrophic engine failure, fire, or loss of propulsion; knocking or a malfunction indicator lamp may occur before failure. At filing, the remedy was under development. That report alone does not establish a later remedy update or whether a particular VIN is affected, so check the current VIN record with NHTSA and Jeep and obtain the latest campaign status before buying. The potentially involved count is not evidence that all listed vehicles failed. Consult the NHTSA / Chrysler Part 573 Safety Recall Report 25V766 and verify the vehicle directly.
2. Arrange a plug-in-hybrid pre-purchase inspection
Use a Jeep/Mopar-certified service center or another qualified shop experienced with plug-in hybrids. Jeep says any Mopar-certified service center can service its 4xe SUVs; that does not make a particular inspection an official Jeep protocol. Ask the technician to inspect the vehicle and charging system, scan for stored and pending faults, review service records and warning lights, and investigate abnormal noises or charging interruptions. Have the shop explain its findings and identify any unresolved issues in writing. A routine used-car inspection that does not assess the high-voltage and charging systems is not a substitute.

- Ask for the scan results, including pending as well as stored faults.
- Review maintenance and repair records, including recall completion documents.
- Ask about warning lights, unusual engine or drivetrain noises, and any history of charging that stops unexpectedly.
- Have the technician assess charging operation and explain any limitations on the inspection.

3. Verify battery evidence and test charging
Ask the seller for a recent battery state-of-health report and have the inspecting technician assess the available battery evidence. If the seller supplies a Jeep battery-health document, you can check its origin using Jeep’s document validation tool. The tool checks whether a document is authentic from submitted fields; it does not independently measure or test the battery. Treat it as document verification, not a substitute for vehicle inspection.

With the seller’s permission—and only if the vehicle is not subject to an unrepaired recall with a no-charge instruction—connect compatible charging equipment and confirm that charging starts and continues normally. Ask what cord or charging equipment comes with the vehicle, and have the inspector check the charging system for faults or interruptions.
Jeep advertises up to 25 miles of electric-mode driving for the Grand Cherokee 4xe. That is a manufacturer figure, not a guarantee of the used vehicle’s present electric range. Actual results depend on model, conditions, and equipment; a single drive or dashboard estimate is not a battery-health report. Jeep also gives approximate full-charge times of about two hours with available Level 2 (240-volt) equipment and about 12 hours using Level 1 (120-volt) equipment. Check included equipment and your home setup
Do not assume a home charger or charging cord is included with a used listing. Jeep’s 2022 model page describes an available Jeep Level II PHEV home charging station, but that does not establish what any particular seller is supplying. Before counting on home charging, confirm the connector and equipment supplied with this vehicle, whether a Level 1 cord is included, the charger’s amperage, your home electrical capacity, and any installation requirements. A Level 2 charger may suit a buyer who can charge at home, but first confirm compatibility and installation needs. See the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe page.
4. Confirm warranty coverage by VIN
Check warranty status through the Jeep vehicle dashboard or by VIN, then ask Jeep or the selling dealer to confirm in writing which coverage remains and the coverage start date. Do not assume a used vehicle still has its original coverage intact based on its model year or the seller’s description. 5. Compare candidates using evidence, not reputation
Compare the actual cars on their records and inspection results rather than assuming one model year or trim is inherently safer or more reliable. The official sources cited here do not establish a defensible reliability ranking, typical repair cost, or current used-market price for the Grand Cherokee 4xe.
