A clean generic code scan or a brief test drive cannot certify that a CVT is healthy. Judge the transmission alongside the SUV’s AWD system, tires, corrosion, accident history, and overall condition.
Start by identifying the exact vehicle and CVT
Record the VIN, model year, trim, drivetrain, and country-market version. Use the owner’s manual or manufacturer service information to confirm which transmission is fitted and what fluid specification it requires. Do not assume that two SUVs from the same brand share a transmission or fluid.

This matters because maintenance guidance is specific to the model, year, market, and driving conditions. For example, Nissan USA lists CVT-fluid inspection every 7,500 miles or 12 months for the 2022 Rogue, and replacement every 60,000 miles under severe driving conditions. Those are recommendations for that US-market Rogue, not a universal interval for Japanese SUVs. Check the exact vehicle’s manual or service guide for its requirements. Check whether maintenance is documented
Ask for dated invoices or service-book entries showing the mileage, work performed, and fluid specification where applicable. A seller’s verbal assurance that the CVT was serviced is less useful than a record that identifies what was done. Compare the documented work with the correct maintenance schedule for that exact vehicle.
Ask how the SUV was used, including whether it regularly towed, drove on mountain or rough roads, or made frequent short trips. Nissan Japan identifies rough roads, mountain routes, repeated short trips, and high annual mileage as severe-use patterns for additional checks. Its examples include those conditions accounting for about 30% or more of driving, 20,000 km or more per year, and repeated trips of 8 km or less. Missing records mean the maintenance history is uncertain; they do not, by themselves, prove that the CVT is failing. Have a specialist assess the uncertainty and factor the findings into your decision rather than treating an undocumented service as completed.
Arrange an independent, CVT-aware inspection
Choose a technician familiar with the vehicle’s make and transmission, and ask for written findings before you commit. The inspection should cover more than a quick scan for warning lights. Ask the shop to assess:

- Transmission operation, leaks, and fluid level or condition where the system can be checked appropriately.
- Stored diagnostic trouble codes and available manufacturer-specific transmission data.
- Whether codes were recently cleared and whether readiness monitors or available scan data point to the need for further evaluation.
- Transmission mounts, driveshafts, and related cooling or driveline components.
- Transfer case and differentials on AWD versions.
A basic OBD-II reader can be a supplementary check only if it supports the vehicle’s transmission module; many generic readers do not show manufacturer-specific CVT codes, live data, or test functions. Even a clean scan is not a pass certificate. An independent inspection that combines scan information with physical checks and a road test is more useful.
Road-test it from cold and again when warm
Ask the seller’s permission to start the SUV cold, then drive it long enough to assess warm operation. Test forward and reverse engagement, slow parking maneuvers, steady cruising, and both gentle and stronger acceleration. Try hills if they are safely and readily available.

Pay attention to delayed or harsh engagement, hesitation, unexpected changes in engine revs, judder or shudder, whining, grinding, warning lamps, overheating messages, or any loss of drive. Note when a symptom occurs and ask the mechanic to investigate it. No single sensation is a diagnosis: a short drive cannot establish CVT health or tell you the cause of a symptom.
Inspect the SUV beyond the transmission
A sound CVT does not make a good purchase if the rest of the vehicle has costly problems. Review the title and service history, look for signs of collision repair, and have the underbody checked for corrosion, impact damage, and fluid leaks. Also assess tire condition and wear, suspension noises, brakes, steering, warning lights, HVAC, and the AWD system where fitted.

On an AWD SUV, compare all tire sizes and wear. Ask the inspecting technician whether a mismatch or uneven wear raises a drivetrain concern. Nissan Japan’s certified-used checklist covers drivetrain, shift shock, suspension, tires, brakes, warning lights, and body or frame condition. Nissan says its checklist includes up to 104 inspection and maintenance items; that figure describes Nissan’s own certified-used pre-delivery checklist, not an independent guarantee of a vehicle’s condition. Inspection paperwork differs by country. As examples of checks manufacturers publish in Japan, Nissan includes transmission and transfer-case oil leaks and level plus driveshaft connections in its inspection guidance, while Toyota’s 24-month inspection guidance includes transmission and transfer-case oil quantity and leaks. Make the purchase decision conditional on evidence
Before negotiating, compare the actual vehicles on documented CVT maintenance, inspection findings and unresolved codes, age and mileage, price, service history, drivetrain, corrosion or repair evidence, tire match and wear, warranty terms, recall status, and the seller’s willingness to allow an independent inspection. Check recall status and local vehicle-history records using the exact VIN in the country where the SUV is registered.

No universal CVT lifespan, failure rate, or safe mileage is established for Japanese SUVs. A high odometer reading, dark fluid, an isolated code, or one test-drive symptom cannot independently settle whether a specific transmission is failing; use model-specific records and a qualified inspection to assess that vehicle.
