Before buying a used electric SUV, get a dated battery state-of-health (SoH) report, confirm the exact remaining battery warranty with the manufacturer, ask what charging records are available, and arrange an inspection by someone experienced with EVs. Then weigh the evidence against your driving and charging needs. Warranty terms, connectors and inspection options vary by country and vehicle, so verify them for the specific SUV—ideally using its VIN.
Start with a battery health report
State of health (SoH) describes a battery’s condition and performance relative to when it was new, commonly expressed as a percentage. Australian government guidance explains that 100% represents the original fully functional state and recommends a battery health check. Some vehicles may display battery information through onboard diagnostics or an app, but a dated report should identify the vehicle, state the result and explain how it was measured. Do not treat a dashboard range estimate as a battery test. Reduced capacity can reduce range, but the distance shown or achieved also depends on conditions and use. Compare the report with the SUV’s observed range and your regular journeys, charging access and tolerance for seasonal or trip-related variation. The evidence does not establish a universal SoH percentage that makes every used electric SUV a bad buy.
Interpret the evidence, not just the number
NIST’s November 2025 discussion paper describes degradation as typically involving lower energy capacity and driving range, and longer charging time. It identifies charging patterns alongside driving patterns, depth of discharge, humidity and temperature as factors associated with degradation. Confirm the battery warranty for this SUV
Ask for the original warranty booklet and a written, vehicle-specific confirmation of what remains. Check the in-service date, current mileage, time and mileage limits, covered components, capacity-loss threshold if one applies, exclusions, required servicing, diagnostic process and how to make a claim. Ask the manufacturer whether coverage transfers to you and what steps are required. Some manufacturers may make transferability conditional on scheduled servicing, so check the service record rather than assuming that coverage follows the vehicle automatically. Battery coverage may be separate from the general vehicle warranty. If the SUV has certified-used coverage, establish whether it supplements or replaces the original warranty and obtain its terms in writing. In the United States, Federal Trade Commission guidance says consumers can ask a dealer for the manufacturer warranty copy and an explanation of coverage, exclusions and repair obligations. Warranty figures are examples, not universal rules
Warranty duration and capacity triggers depend on the vehicle, market and program. These examples show why the exact terms matter:

Ask what charging history is available
Ask the seller whether the vehicle’s app, account or service records show charging information, and ask the manufacturer what records that model can provide to a second owner. Keep expectations realistic: the reviewed official guidance does not establish that every EV stores a complete, standardized lifetime log of AC and DC charging, or that such a log transfers with the vehicle.

NIST identifies charging patterns as one factor associated with degradation, but the evidence does not support a fast-charge count or percentage that predicts battery failure. If records are incomplete or unavailable, do not treat that alone as proof of a bad battery. Use the health report, warranty confirmation and EV-experienced inspection to assess condition instead.
Inspect the charging equipment and vehicle records
- Check whether the charging cable is included and inspect it for visible damage.
- Inspect the vehicle’s charging inlet and confirm that its connector and charging capability match the equipment and public charging network you expect to use.
- Review service receipts and maintenance history; ask for a vehicle-history report and confirmation that applicable safety recalls have been addressed.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic or inspection service experienced with electric vehicles.
Connector standards are market-specific. For example, Australian government guidance identifies Type 2 for slower AC charging and CCS2 for faster DC charging, with CHAdeMO on a limited selection of vehicles in that market. Do not assume those details apply in another country; check the SUV’s specification and local infrastructure before buying a replacement cable. - What is the SoH result, who produced it, when was it measured, and what method was used?
- How much battery warranty remains by both time and mileage, what capacity trigger applies, and how does coverage transfer?
- Does the demonstrated range suit your regular driving and available charging?
- Are service and recall records available, and what charging history can the seller document?
- Are the cable and connector compatible with the vehicle and the charging options you plan to use?
- What are the total purchase and inspection costs?
Before committing, match every warranty claim to the VIN and obtain the manufacturer’s confirmation in writing. Local consumer rights, warranty rules and inspection services differ, so use the process that applies where you are buying.
