Before buying a used electric car in Pakistan, make the decision hinge on four things: a measured battery-health report, charging that works for your routine, written warranty and repair support, and verified transfer paperwork. A dashboard range estimate or model year cannot establish that the car is sound or practical to own.
The key question is not simply whether the car drives today. It is whether you can charge this exact variant, have it diagnosed and repaired in your city, and complete a clean transfer at a cost you understand. Assess evidence for the specific car rather than relying on general claims about the model.

Start with your driving and charging needs
Assess a specific car against your actual routine, not a general claim about electric vehicles. Before viewing one, write down the longest recurring round trip you expect to make. Include passengers, luggage, air conditioning and other conditions that affect energy use. A short commute may be easy to cover while a longer regular trip could leave little margin.

Think about the trips you make regularly, not only the average commute or the distance to work. A car that suits an ordinary weekday may be less convenient if you also make a longer recurring trip. The aim is to compare the car’s practical range behavior with the trip you need it to complete, with the people and luggage you normally carry.

For the exact variant, ask the seller for its battery capacity, the range-test cycle behind any quoted range, its charging ports, and which charger or cable is included. The range figure is meaningful only with its test cycle and variant identified; it is not a prediction of the range you will achieve on every route. Do not assume two versions with similar names have identical battery or charging specifications. Write down the exact variant and use that same information when asking workshops or charger installers about compatibility.
Prove that charging fits your life
If you plan to charge at home, check that you have dedicated overnight parking and establish whether a suitable charger can be installed there. Confirm compatibility with the exact car and ask who pays for the equipment and installation. A home-charging plan is not practical until parking, electrical setup and installation are all workable. If you do not control the parking space or cannot arrange installation, do not count home charging as an option until that issue is resolved.
If you will depend on public charging, identify the actual stations you would use on routine routes. Check their connector types, prices and opening hours directly. Station availability can vary; for an intercity trip, call ahead rather than assuming a listed charger will be open and usable when you arrive. A station’s existence in a directory or a general statement about charging infrastructure does not prove it will suit your car or your schedule. Confirm the connector against the exact variant and verify the practical details for the specific station.

Check local repair capability before committing
Ask which workshops in your city can diagnose the car’s high-voltage system. Confirm whether common parts and replacement body panels are locally available. A car can have acceptable battery condition and still be a poor fit if a fault would require support you cannot reach or parts you cannot source. Ask about the particular vehicle and its systems rather than treating ordinary mechanical servicing as proof that a workshop can diagnose an EV’s high-voltage components.
Include repair access in your comparison before negotiating. A seller’s assurance that the car is in good condition is not the same as knowing where you could take it if a warning or fault appears later. If there is no workshop you can identify, or parts availability is unclear, record that as a cost and ownership uncertainty rather than assuming it will be easy to resolve.
Get a battery-health report and fault scan
Ask an authorised service centre or qualified EV specialist to provide a battery state-of-health (SoH) report and a diagnostic fault scan. The report should relate to the specific vehicle you are considering; the projected range shown on its dashboard is an estimate, not a battery-health certificate. The natural buyer question is, “Is the battery secretly cooked?” A report and scan are the practical way to seek evidence instead of guessing from the range display.

Ask the person performing the inspection to explain the reported SoH, any battery-related faults and what the scan does or does not establish. Keep the report and scan results in writing so you can consider them alongside the car’s warranty and service history. If the seller will not allow an independent or authorised inspection, you lack key evidence about the battery and should not treat the displayed range as a substitute. A clean-looking dashboard or a reassuring drive does not provide the same information as a vehicle-specific report and fault scan.
Use the report as one part of the decision, not as a guarantee that the entire car is sound. Compare what it says with the written warranty, service records, charging tests and the practical range you need. If a fault or report result is unclear, ask the specialist to explain it before deciding whether it changes the likely repair cost or makes the vehicle unsuitable. Do not fill gaps in the evidence with assumptions based on the model year.
Do not confuse a road test with a capacity test
Drive on roads similar to your daily use and observe consumption and range behavior against your trip requirement. A nearby-road test can help assess how the car behaves in ordinary driving, but a short test drive does not measure battery capacity or replace a battery report. Treat the road test and the specialist inspection as different checks: one helps you experience the car in context; the other supplies battery and diagnostic evidence.
Inspect the charging equipment and underbody
Check the charge port for visible damage and confirm that supplied cables or chargers are present and in usable condition. Verify that the connector and charging equipment match the exact variant and the charging options you intend to use. If the seller says equipment is included, identify exactly what is being handed over rather than assuming a charger or cable is part of the sale.
Have the battery enclosure underneath inspected for damage. Arrange AC and DC charging tests where practical and safe, preferably with someone qualified to operate the equipment. A successful test on one charging type does not prove that every port, cable or charging function works, so record what was actually tested. If you cannot safely arrange a charging test at the viewing, do not describe the charging system as fully checked; note what remains unverified and decide whether to arrange another inspection.
These checks also connect to your charging plan. A car may have an appropriate port for one station or setup but not the connection you expect to use. Compare the physical ports and supplied equipment with the chargers on your real routes, and ask a qualified specialist or installer to confirm compatibility where you are uncertain. Do not buy generic cables or equipment based only on a broad label such as “EV charger”; fit depends on the exact car and setup.
Check warranty, service history and repair support
Review service records and available software-update history. Ask for the complete written warranty rather than relying on a seller’s summary or a verbal assurance. Establish whether any remaining coverage transfers to you, and obtain that answer in writing. A warranty still in force for the current owner may not necessarily provide the same protection to the next owner unless the transfer terms confirm it.

Read the terms for time and kilometre limits, battery-health conditions, covered components, required servicing, exclusions and where diagnosis or repairs can be performed. In particular, check coverage for the motor, inverter and onboard charger as well as the battery. Ask for likely out-of-warranty replacement costs for the charging module, inverter and battery pack; if a reliable estimate is unavailable, account for that uncertainty before agreeing on a price. Do not infer coverage for a component from a general statement that the car has a battery warranty.
Warranty value depends on more than the time left on paper: it also depends on the stated conditions, transfer rules and whether you can access an eligible repair location. Confirm those details with the party responsible for the warranty, not only the seller. Ask what service schedule must be followed and whether the records you have seen show that it was followed. If a coverage condition or exclusion is difficult to interpret, get a written clarification before treating the warranty as part of the car’s value.
Service history and software-update records help you understand what has been done, but they do not replace a current condition check. Compare the records with the specialist’s scan and the seller’s account of repairs. A gap or inconsistency is a reason to ask for an explanation and investigate further, not a reason to assume either the best or the worst.
Inspect the rest of the car and test it in context
A used EV still needs a normal used-car inspection. Check for collision repairs and flood damage, and inspect the suspension, brakes and tyres. Review the service history for consistency with the car’s condition and ask about any repairs that could affect the battery enclosure or high-voltage components. Pay particular attention to the underside because the battery enclosure is located there and damage merits specialist attention.
Take a test drive on roads resembling your regular use. Consider whether the observed consumption and range behavior leave enough margin for your longest recurring trip. Treat this as a practical driving check, not a substitute for the diagnostic report. A brief route cannot establish battery capacity, and the range projection while driving remains an estimate. Keep the route and conditions in mind when comparing what you observe with your everyday requirement.

Verify registration, taxes and transfer documents
Before signing, confirm the original registration certificate, the vehicle’s token-tax position, seller and purchaser identity documents, and the original registration file if applicable. Transfer requirements and charges depend on the province responsible for the vehicle’s registration, so verify the process with that authority for this specific car. Check that the seller’s identity and the paperwork are consistent with the transfer you are arranging.

For a Punjab-registered vehicle, the Punjab Excise transfer information lists seller and purchaser CNIC copies and the original registration certificate with updated token tax among the required documents. Do not assume the same treatment applies elsewhere, or infer the amount due for this vehicle from a general exemption statement. Do not treat an import incentive as a saving on a used purchase without confirmation that it applies to your transaction. Compare candidates on evidence, not model year
For each shortlisted vehicle, write down the factors that determine whether it is a workable and supportable purchase. Apply the same questions to every candidate so that a newer model year or a more appealing dashboard range does not outweigh a serious weakness in battery condition, charging or support. Ask for the evidence before comparing prices; otherwise, you may be comparing one car’s documented condition with another car’s unverified claims.
Keep the longest routine round trip visible during the comparison. A range number without its test cycle and exact variant is not directly useful, and a test drive cannot fill the gap in a missing battery report. Similarly, a warranty only has practical value if it transfers, covers the parts that matter, and can be used at a repair location you can reach. Include the charging arrangement and paperwork in the same comparison rather than treating them as afterthoughts.

Use a staged inspection before paying

- Write down your longest recurring round trip and the passengers, luggage and air-conditioning use it involves.
- Decide where the car will park overnight and whether a suitable home charger can be installed. If you will use public charging, identify stations on your real routes and check their connector types, prices and hours.
- Ask for the exact variant’s battery capacity, range-test cycle, charging ports, included charger or cable, and who would bear installation costs.
