Before buying, verify the exact car and trim, the seller and warranty provider, current grant eligibility, charging fit, insurance, tax, and local repair support. “Chinese electric car” does not describe one manufacturer or one UK ownership experience: make the decision from written, model-specific terms rather than assumptions about where a car was made.

What should you check before buying a Chinese electric car?

Use the same evidence-led checklist for any new EV, with particular care to identify who is responsible at each stage of UK ownership. The model, trim, registration route and seller can all affect the answer.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record model, trim, options, registration status, on-road price and intended purchase route. Ask for the vehicle identification details when available.
  2. Confirm the grant. Check the current eligible-vehicle list and rules for that exact variant and transaction route; do not treat a discount in an advert as proof.
  3. Read the warranty documents. Check whole-car and battery/drivetrain cover, exclusions, claim administrator, repair locations and transfer terms.
  4. Match charging to your life. Compare the exact trim’s battery, official range, AC/DC charging capability and supplied cable with home arrangements and regular routes.
  5. Price the full ownership package. Get an insurance quote, calculate vehicle tax, and include charging, servicing, finance, tyres, subscriptions and installation where relevant.
  6. Verify safety and support. Check approval, recalls, safety information, authorised service access, parts and collision repair arrangements, and connected-service terms.

For two or more shortlisted cars, fill in the comparison table below using seller and manufacturer documents. Leave unknowns marked “not stated” rather than treating them as equivalent.

Use the comparison as a record of what is confirmed, not as a scoring system that hides uncertainty. If one dealer gives a clear answer about parts, servicing or warranty claims and another does not, mark the difference and follow up before paying. A low advertised price is not directly comparable if one quote includes a grant, delivery charges, optional equipment or different finance terms and the other does not.

  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

Does the UK Electric Car Grant apply to this car?

Possibly, but eligibility is not determined by the car’s country of manufacture or by its make alone. The Department for Transport and Office for Zero Emission Vehicles’ April 2026 guidance describes grant bands of £3,750 and £1,500 for approved new cars that meet scheme requirements. The exact eligible list changes as vehicles enter and leave the market, so check the current list for the precise model and trim before relying on a saving (GOV.UK: Electric Car Grant consumer guidance).

There are distinct price tests in the scheme material: the guidance sets a £37,000 RRP limit, with specific treatment for some interpolation-family variants, while portal guidance describes a £42,000 purchase-price ceiling for grant claims. Do not collapse these into a single cap or assume a quote qualifies because it appears to be below one of them. Check both the current rules and the exact seller invoice.

Eligibility also depends on the transaction. Portal guidance says OZEV must confirm eligible vehicles and records a purchase-route change effective 17 July 2026 excluding certain orders registered to a dealership or manufacturer. Check the current rule for your circumstances; do not assume a salary-sacrifice, demonstration, company or dealer-registered transaction qualifies (GOV.UK: Apply for the Electric Car Grant).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ask the seller to identify the grant-eligible variant and confirm how the grant appears in the written price.
  • Check whether the car is new and whether your purchase route meets current conditions.
  • Confirm what happens to the price if the grant is rejected or the rules change before delivery.

Check the grant again close to ordering and make sure the contract and invoice describe the same car and purchase route you checked. The portal guidance says the list is updated as models arrive and leave, so an earlier conversation, an old advertisement or eligibility for a different trim is not confirmation for your order. If a seller says a discount is “the grant”, ask whether the grant is being claimed by the seller or whether the price is simply a commercial promotion. The practical question is what you will pay if the application is not accepted.

What does the warranty actually cover?

Do not compare cars on a headline warranty duration alone. Under the grant criteria in the 2026 guidance, a qualifying manufacturer must provide at least three years or 60,000 miles of vehicle cover excluding the battery and electric drivetrain; at least eight years or 100,000 miles for the battery and drivetrain; and battery replacement if capacity falls below 70% during the first eight years. The guidance also addresses transferability and no-charge repair or replacement of covered defective parts, subject to stated limitations. These are grant criteria, not a substitute for the chosen car’s own warranty booklet (GOV.UK: Electric Car Grant consumer guidance).

Before signing, ask the seller to show the actual terms and answer these points in writing:

  • When warranty cover starts and whether its time and mileage limits are “whichever comes first.”
  • How battery capacity is measured, what threshold triggers a remedy and what remedy is offered.
  • Which parts, faults, wear items and uses are excluded.
  • Whether servicing must be done at a specified network or to prescribed intervals.
  • Where warranty work is performed, and who pays recovery or transport costs.
  • Whether the warranty transfers to a later owner and how to make a claim.
  • Who is responsible for honouring the cover if the seller, importer or warranty administrator changes.
  • How parts delays or a period without the car are handled.

The same guidance says the vehicle warranty should cover supplied equipment such as the charge cable. A separately installed home charge point is external equipment and need not be covered by the car warranty. Check its own warranty and installation terms separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for the actual warranty booklet rather than relying on a dealer’s summary or a general brand webpage. The grant minimums do not answer every ownership question: the chosen warranty may define claim steps, servicing conditions, covered components and exclusions in detail. Ask who you contact first if a warning light appears, whether the car must be taken to a particular location, and how recovery is arranged if it cannot be driven. A promise that “the manufacturer will sort it” is less useful than a named claims administrator and a clear process.

Will the range and charging work for your routes?

Get the specifications for the exact trim, not a range figure copied from a different battery or wheel configuration. Record battery size, official range and its test basis, AC charging rate, DC rapid-charging rate, connector type, and whether a cable is included. Then test those figures against the journeys you actually make.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Plan for the hard journeys, not just the commute

Consider motorway speed, winter temperatures, passenger and luggage load, towing, and whether your longest regular trip has dependable charging stops. Use a route plan and, if possible, a test drive on representative roads. Official range is a comparison figure, not a promise of the distance you will achieve in every condition.

GOV.UK’s EV guidance says 99% of car journeys in England are under 100 miles, citing underlying journey data in its 2025 update. That population-level fact may reassure some buyers, but it cannot determine whether a particular car suits an individual’s longer trips or charging access (GOV.UK: Electric vehicles). If towing matters, verify the exact model’s type approval and permitted towing capability rather than assuming an EV can tow because it has ample torque.

Think through a normal week as well as an occasional long trip: where the car will be parked overnight, how often you can charge, and whether a public rapid-charging stop fits your usual routes. Compare the exact car’s charging specifications with the charge points you expect to use; “rapid charging” is not enough information to establish how quickly a particular car can charge. Ask the dealer to confirm connector details and included equipment, and check whether the advertised charging rate refers to AC charging, DC charging or both.

Check home charging before ordering

Confirm whether you have off-street parking, whether the electrical supply and proposed location suit a charge point, and whether landlord, freeholder or other permission is needed. Ask an installer to assess the property before treating a quoted installation or charging speed as certain. Check that the vehicle’s charging interface and supplied cable suit the intended equipment.

Grant guidance asks manufacturers to provide domestic electrical safety advice, voltage and amperage requirements, and information on any additional equipment or circuit needed. It does not establish that a particular home charger will work with every car or property. A home unit is a separate purchase and installation decision; buyers without suitable parking should assess realistic public-charging access instead (GOV.UK: Electric Car Grant consumer guidance; GOV.UK: Electric vehicles).

Separate the supplied cable from a fixed home charging unit when comparing quotes. The car warranty should cover supplied equipment such as its charge cable under the grant guidance, but the installed home unit is external equipment. Check the installer’s scope, the equipment’s own warranty and any permission or electrical work required at your property. If you do not have suitable off-street parking, do not assume home charging is available: assess the public charging options you can actually use and include that pattern in your route and cost planning.

How much is road tax on an electric car in 2026?

Electric cars are not automatically exempt from vehicle tax. For the rate year 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, a qualifying electric car first registered on or after 1 April 2025 has a £10 first-year rate followed by the £200 standard rate. An expensive-car supplement may also apply to a qualifying vehicle above the relevant list-price threshold, starting in the second year for five years. Check the DVLA’s current rates against the exact list price and registration date; rates can change (GOV.UK: Vehicle tax rate tables).

Include tax in your ownership calculation alongside insurance, charging, servicing, tyres, finance interest, optional subscriptions, depreciation and any home installation. Obtain a quote for the exact registration or trim and intended driver: an insurance price cannot be reliably inferred from the car’s country of manufacture. Past charging-cost estimates are not a substitute for today’s tariffs or your own usage. For example, GOV.UK’s 2025-updated EV guidance gave an approximate home-charging cost of 8p per mile and petrol or diesel comparisons of 13p to 17p per mile using prices stated as of January 2024; those are historical figures, not current guaranteed savings (GOV.UK: Electric vehicles).

Build your comparison from the costs that apply to your own circumstances rather than a generic “cost per mile” claim. An insurance quote should use the intended driver and, where available, the exact registration or trim. For tax, use the car’s registration date and list-price details, and check the expensive-car supplement separately. For charging, use current tariffs and your likely mix of home and public charging. Include finance interest and any optional subscriptions alongside the upfront price so that a cheaper monthly payment is not mistaken for a lower overall cost.

How can you check approval, safety and recalls?

GOV.UK says a vehicle must meet approval requirements before it can be sold or registered in the UK, including evidence covering fire and electrical safety assessments. Ask the seller to confirm the car is approved for the UK market and that the vehicle supplied is the UK-spec version. Do not infer a crash-test result or safety rating from the manufacturer’s nationality; look up information for the exact model and variant where available (GOV.UK: Electric vehicles).

Check whether the vehicle has an outstanding recall and confirm how any required work will be completed before handover. GOV.UK’s general buying guidance directs buyers to check vehicle details and recalls; its steps also say the car must be registered, insured and taxed before it is driven on public roads. Follow the specific instructions that apply to a new, already registered or imported vehicle (GOV.UK: Buy a vehicle).

Approval, a safety rating and recall status are different checks. Approval is a requirement for sale or registration and includes fire and electrical safety assessments; a model’s safety rating is separate information to look up where available. A clean recall check today also does not replace asking how the seller will notify you and arrange any recall work later. Check the exact vehicle or model details using official information, particularly if a car is already registered or is being supplied through an import route.

Who will service and repair it in the UK?

Ask for the nearest authorised repairer’s address and whether it can perform routine maintenance, diagnostics and high-voltage repairs for the exact model. Find out who books warranty work, who handles breakdown recovery, and whether accident repairs require a specialist facility. Request routine service schedules and prices, plus a clear explanation of how parts are sourced and what happens if a part is delayed.

These are model- and seller-specific questions. Country of manufacture alone does not establish reliability, UK parts availability, repair quality or after-sales performance. Get answers from the seller or importer in writing, and consider contacting the named repairer to verify that it supports the vehicle you intend to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask separately about routine servicing, warranty repairs and collision damage: they may involve different providers. Confirm that the named repairer supports the exact model, can access the diagnostics and parts it needs, and is equipped for relevant high-voltage work. If the dealer refers you to a third party, ask who coordinates the job and who is responsible if there is a disagreement about whether a repair is covered. Ask how parts delays are handled and whether the seller can explain the expected process if the car cannot be repaired locally.

This research does not establish a brand-by-brand record of UK repair performance or after-sales quality. Treat assurances about a network, parts stock or service coverage as claims to verify for the seller and model you are considering, rather than conclusions that follow from the car’s origin.

What should you know about apps, software and vehicle data?

For a connected car, check which features require an account, an active mobile connection or a paid subscription; how updates are delivered; and what happens to key functions if an app or online service is discontinued. Read the vehicle and app privacy terms for what information is collected, where it is shared and how long services are supported.

GOV.UK notes that automotive vehicles are exempt from the consumer connectable-product regime under the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure framework. That exemption is not a certification of vehicle cybersecurity and does not replace checking the manufacturer’s own security, privacy and support documentation (GOV.UK: Consumer connectable product security regulations).

Ask which functions remain available without a phone app, account, mobile signal or subscription, and whether optional services have a stated support period. Check the terms before relying on connected features for everyday tasks. The consumer connectable-product rules exemption for vehicles should not be read as an assurance about an individual car’s security or data practices; only the manufacturer’s own current terms and documentation can answer those model-specific questions.

What to get in writing before paying a deposit

  • The exact model, trim, specification, on-road price and delivery date.
  • Whether the grant applies to your vehicle and purchase route, and how the quote accounts for it.
  • The warranty booklet and the party responsible for administering and honouring claims.
  • Charging specifications, included cable and any equipment needed at home.
  • The nearest authorised service point, routine service schedule and repair arrangements.
  • Recall status and confirmation that the car is approved for UK sale or registration.
  • Insurance quote, tax estimate, finance charges, cancellation terms and any deposit refund conditions.
  • Terms for connected features, software updates, subscriptions and data use.

Read the order form and finance documents as well as the sales quote. Confirm whether the quoted price depends on a grant, a particular purchase route or a delivery date, and what happens if those conditions change. Record the promised handover date, any optional equipment, cancellation terms and the conditions for returning a deposit. If a crucial answer is still “we will confirm later,” ask for the confirmation before committing rather than assuming it will match a verbal assurance.

Before the car goes on the road, follow the relevant GOV.UK steps for its status: check its details and recalls and ensure it is registered, insured and taxed. A new car, an already registered vehicle and an import may involve different steps, so use the guidance that matches the actual transaction rather than relying on a generic handover checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before buying a Chinese electric car?

Check the exact model and trim, the seller and purchase route, current grant eligibility, the written whole-car and battery warranties, charging specifications and home/public charging fit. Also get an insurance quote, check vehicle tax, confirm UK approval and recall status, and obtain written details of local servicing, parts, accident repairs and connected-service terms. The country of manufacture alone does not establish any of those model-specific answers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Chinese electric cars covered by the UK Electric Car Grant?

Some new electric cars may be eligible, but the grant is not a blanket subsidy for every electric car or every car from a particular country. OZEV confirms eligible vehicles, and the list and purchase-route rules can change. Check the exact model, trim, current rules and your transaction route, and make sure the seller’s invoice shows how the grant is being applied.

How long is the battery warranty on a new electric car?

The 2026 Electric Car Grant criteria require at least eight years or 100,000 miles of battery and electric-drivetrain warranty, plus battery replacement if capacity falls below 70% during the first eight years. Those are scheme criteria, not a substitute for the chosen car’s warranty booklet. Check the actual threshold, measurement method, exclusions, claim process, transfer terms and responsible warranty provider.

Can I charge this EV at home, and what charger do I need?

Check the exact car’s connector, AC charging rate, supplied cable and any additional equipment requirements, then assess your parking, electrical supply and installation permissions. A fixed home charge point is separate from the car and its supplied cable, so verify installation suitability and the unit’s own terms. If you do not have suitable off-street parking, plan around public charging you can realistically access.

How much is road tax on an electric car in 2026?

For 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, a qualifying electric car first registered on or after 1 April 2025 has a £10 first-year rate and then the £200 standard rate. An expensive-car supplement may also apply to qualifying cars above the relevant list-price threshold. Check the current DVLA rates using the exact registration date and list-price details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get insurance and servicing for this model near me?

Do not infer availability or price from the car’s country of manufacture. Get an insurance quote for the exact registration or trim and intended driver. Ask the seller for the nearest authorised repairer and confirm directly that it supports the exact model, including routine service, warranty work and high-voltage repairs. Ask how parts and collision repairs are handled and who coordinates warranty claims.

The Bottom Line

Buy the exact vehicle whose price, grant eligibility, warranty and support arrangements you have checked—not a general promise about a make or country. Before paying a deposit, confirm the grant and purchase route, read the actual warranty, match charging to your home and routes, price tax and insurance, and get servicing, repair, recall and connected-service answers in writing. If an answer is unknown, keep it marked as unknown until the seller or manufacturer confirms it.
