The guidance below applies to towable RVs generally, not a particular make or model.
Before you inspect: get the trailer’s details
Ask the seller for the VIN, title and registration information, equipment list, and maintenance and repair records. Ask about known leaks, collision or hail damage, storage conditions, and previous repairs. Find out whether the trailer can be connected to shore power and water during your visit so you can see appliances and plumbing operate.
Confirm the trailer’s labeled gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), axle ratings, and cargo capacity, then compare them with the load you expect to carry—including water, equipment, and luggage—and the tow vehicle’s ratings. NHTSA advises buyers to consider whether a trailer has enough cargo capacity for its intended use; its consumer guidance explains that the certification label shows GVWR. Do not judge towability from trailer length or empty weight alone. See NHTSA’s trailer safety guidance.
Check current recall information and ask whether relevant repairs have been completed. NHTSA advises buyers to consult manufacturer information resources when checking trailers; begin with NHTSA’s recall lookup and verify the trailer’s identity carefully.

Inspect the exterior and look for water intrusion
Roof, seams, and openings
Walk around the trailer and look for impact damage, corrosion, loose trim, separation, poorly matched repairs, or staining and swelling around windows, doors, roof edges, vents, and compartment openings. Where access is safe and permitted, inspect roof seams and penetrations for cracked, dried, missing, or patched sealant, as well as visible membrane tears or soft spots. Check slide-out alignment and seals if the trailer has slide-outs.
These checks can reveal warning signs, but they cannot rule out concealed damage. NHTSA-hosted trailer-care guidance recommends checking roof and exterior seals and looking for interior leaks; NRVIA’s used-RV guidance also identifies roof condition, sealant, soft roof spots, repairs, and slide-out seals as inspection points. Interior signs of leaks
Inside, inspect ceiling corners, wall joints, cabinets, under sinks, window surrounds, and floor edges for stains, musty odor, bubbling, swelling, softness, or fresh cosmetic work that may conceal a repair. Look under the trailer and inside cabinets for signs of active leaks when the systems are running.
An optional moisture meter can help screen a suspicious area, but the cited inspection guidance gives no universal reading threshold and endorses no particular meter. Treat a reading as a reason for further evaluation, not proof that the area is sound. NRVIA’s standards describe water-damage evaluation as observational; invasive access that could damage components is outside the described inspection scope. Review NRVIA’s inspection standards for the limits of that scope.

Slide-outs, if fitted
With the seller’s permission, run each slide-out fully. Watch for smooth travel, alignment, seal contact, floor-edge condition, and signs of water entry. Stop if operation appears unsafe or the mechanism binds.
Check tires, wheels, brakes, and towing hardware
Inspect every tire, including the spare, for cracking, damage, uneven wear, and general condition; record the date code if it is legible. Check tire pressure and look for dry rot and worn tread. NRVIA’s used-RV article attributes a six-year replacement recommendation to NTSB and most tire manufacturers, but this is a secondary attribution, not a verified universal rule here. Look over the accessible frame and undercarriage for rust, cracks, bends, loose parts, damage, or leaks. Inspect the coupler, jack, safety chains, breakaway equipment, wiring, and exterior lights. If you cannot assess the brakes and wheel components yourself, have a qualified service center check the brakes, drums, hubs, bearings, suspension, and wheel fasteners. NHTSA’s trailer guidance discusses federal requirements relating to trailer brakes, tow balls, safety chains, and breakaway devices, and recommends professional brake inspection. - Exterior and interior lights, outlets, switches, and fans
- Furnace, air conditioner, refrigerator in its available modes, and water heater
- Water pump, faucets, toilet, tanks, and drains
- Any fitted solar or battery system
- Smoke, carbon-monoxide, and propane alarms, plus the fire extinguisher
Watch for leaks at plumbing connections and under sinks while water is running. Do not energize equipment that appears damaged. Never use a flame to check for propane leaks; have a qualified service center check propane-system pressure. Review records and arrange an independent inspection
Compare the trailer’s VIN, identity, and equipment with its paperwork. Ask for invoices and documentation for maintenance, warranty or recall work, and major repairs. A clean-looking interior does not establish that concealed areas are free of damage.
For a significant purchase, consider an independent RV inspector experienced with towable units and, where relevant, the trailer’s construction or systems. Before booking, ask for the points-of-inspection list, price, availability, and a written explanation of any systems within scope that the inspector could not inspect and why. Ask what the inspection excludes and request the report in writing. Compare candidates on condition, capacity, and evidence
When choosing between two trailers, compare the same factors for each rather than relying on appearance or asking price alone:
