Before buying a used BYD Atto 3, confirm the car’s market, model year and VIN; get its battery condition and remaining warranty documented; match service records to the correct schedule; commission an EV-qualified inspection; and check recall completion by VIN. A test drive and a clean-looking exterior cannot establish battery health, warranty eligibility or whether campaigns have been completed.
1. Establish exactly which Atto 3 you are considering
Start with the VIN and record the model year, trim, mileage, first registration or delivery date, country of original sale and software version. Ask the seller for the service book, maintenance invoices, repair history and evidence of software updates. These details determine which handbook, maintenance schedule and regional warranty terms apply. BYD’s [owner resources](https://www.byd.com/uk/owners) and [warranty information](https://www.byd.com/uk/warranty) are market-specific; confirm the relevant documents with BYD in the country where the car is registered.
2. Get battery condition assessed and documented
Ask BYD or an EV-qualified workshop for a dated battery-health report. Find out the test method and request any diagnostic findings relevant to the high-voltage battery. A seller’s estimate of driving range, dashboard display or a short test drive is not a substitute for a battery assessment.
BYD UK says its Approved Used cars are tested to maintain at least 90% Battery State of Health. That is a claim for that UK program, not a universal minimum for privately sold Atto 3s or cars in other markets. The same page advertises a 179-point mechanical and technical inspection for its Approved Used vehicles; neither figure should be treated as a guarantee for an ordinary private sale. 3. Confirm what warranty remains—and whether it transfers
Contact BYD in the car’s registration country with the VIN. Ask for written confirmation of the remaining coverage, time and mileage limits, transfer rules, and whether the car’s maintenance records satisfy the applicable conditions. UK and Australian policies differ, so do not apply one market’s terms to a car originally sold elsewhere.
Also distinguish a private used-car sale from a manufacturer Approved Used purchase. BYD UK’s Approved Used page describes additional benefits, including two years of 24/7 pan-European breakdown cover, but those benefits are tied to that offer and may have eligibility or mileage conditions. Confirm the current terms rather than assuming they transfer with any used Atto 3.

4. Commission an EV-qualified pre-purchase inspection
Arrange an inspection by a workshop with EV experience, and ask for written findings rather than a general “looks good” assessment. BYD Australia’s service inspection scope lists checks including high-voltage wiring, battery housing, brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, system health and software analysis, as well as an extended road test. Ask the inspector to assess the following on the specific car:
- Underside, battery housing and mounting area for visible damage.
- Visible high-voltage components and wiring, assessed by a suitably qualified technician.
- Brakes, suspension, steering, wheels and tyres.
- Dashboard warnings, vehicle-system diagnostics and software-related findings.
- Any repair or impact history that could affect the battery enclosure or other components.
A buyer’s walk-around cannot certify high-voltage battery condition. BYD Australia’s [service information](https://www.byd.com/au/service) shows why a professional check covers more than visual condition.

5. Check tyres, wheels and wear patterns
Inspect visible tread and look for uneven wear, cuts, bulges or wheel damage; have a technician assess anything suspicious. Check tyre pressure against the specification for the car, not a generic figure. A digital pressure gauge can help with that one measurement, but it cannot assess tyre structure, establish alignment or replace an inspection.
6. Match maintenance records to the right schedule
Use the handbook and Warranty and Maintenance Service Manual for the car’s market and model year. BYD’s 2025 Australian owner handbook says: “Please maintain the vehicle regularly according to the requirements in the Warranty and Maintenance Service Manual of BYD.” That instruction is from an Australian document; it does not establish the schedule for an Atto 3 from another market. Ask BYD to explain in writing whether any missed or undocumented maintenance affects this car’s warranty.

Compare the records with the applicable schedule, not just the seller’s description of the car as “serviced.” Look for dated invoices and evidence of work, then have any gaps or discrepancies clarified before purchase.

Search the current recall database for the country where the vehicle is registered, then ask BYD to confirm by VIN which campaigns are open and which have been completed. A model-level recall summary or online discussion cannot establish whether a particular vehicle is affected or repaired. The VIN-specific answer should come from the relevant authority or BYD, with completion documented.

8. Test drive and review diagnostic findings
Drive long enough to assess braking, steering, ride, acceleration, warning messages, infotainment and driver-assistance functions. Note any warning or unusual behaviour and ask the workshop to review it alongside fault codes and diagnostic results; do not dismiss a warning on the basis of anecdotal reports. BYD Australia includes road testing and vehicle-health and software checks within its service scope.
Compare candidates on evidence, not claims
When considering more than one car, compare the documentation and inspection results in the same categories:

BYD UK’s Approved Used inspection and battery-health claims are useful reference points when comparing evidence, but they do not establish the condition or cover of a privately sold car. If a seller cannot provide a requested record, treat that as an unanswered question to resolve with BYD or an independent EV-qualified workshop before committing.
