Before buying a used supercharged Mustang, identify the exact car and kit, verify the installation and service records, and have an independent shop inspect it cold, warm, on a lift, and during a road test. A horsepower claim or clean engine bay cannot establish the car’s condition, the tune’s suitability, or whether any warranty remains.
Start with the exact Mustang and supercharger, not the horsepower claim
“Supercharged Mustang” is not a single configuration. Model year, engine, trim, transmission, kit, pulley, fuel-system parts, calibration, and installation history can all affect fitment, maintenance, emissions compliance, and warranty eligibility. The first job is to establish what is actually on the car.

Record the vehicle and kit details
Write down the VIN, model year, trim, engine, transmission, mileage, and the supercharger’s make, model, and part number. Ask the seller to identify the original kit and disclose later changes. Photograph the kit label and visible hardware, and compare the VIN with the title and service documents.
Ask specifically whether the pulley, injectors, fuel system, intake, exhaust, intercooler, or calibration have been changed. Request the calibration file or tuner records if available. Have the inspecting shop assess whether the installed parts and calibration appear to match. These checks do not prove that a tune is safe or that the car makes a particular power figure; they help the shop identify what needs further scrutiny.

Ford’s product listings illustrate why the details matter: its Select Parts warranty document treats 2015–2017 and 2018–2019 Mustang kits as distinct applications, while its current M-6066-M8800 listing specifies 2024–2026 5.0L Mustang GT and Dark Horse applications. Those examples are not a fitment list for every kit. Verify compatibility using the specific VIN and kit part number with Ford Performance or the kit manufacturer.
Treat output figures as product claims, not evidence about this car
Ford Performance’s current M-6066-M8800 listing states 810 hp at 7,500 rpm and 615 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm for the listed 2024–2026 GT and Dark Horse applications with active exhaust; it states 10 hp less for non-active-exhaust applications. The listing describes a Gen 6 3.0L Whipple supercharger, intercooler, injectors, calibration, and Tomahawk delivery tool, and specifies 91+ octane fuel. These are figures and equipment details for that particular Ford kit, not a baseline expectation for a used Mustang or proof of its present output.
Unless the seller supplies a credible dyno record for this exact car and configuration, treat a stated horsepower number as an unverified claim. Even a dyno sheet describes a measurement under particular test conditions; it does not replace an assessment of mechanical condition.

Ask for the title and ownership documents, maintenance invoices, inspection records, and any accident or repair paperwork. Compare the seller’s account of the car and its modifications with dated invoices. Missing documents do not prove that work was done badly, but they leave important questions unanswered and make it harder to establish what parts are installed or whether required maintenance was completed.
Use a history report as one cross-check
Check the VIN and recall status through official channels and obtain a vehicle-history report. Ford says its report process can flag possible flood, fire, frame, salvage or title, odometer, accident, and title-history issues. A report is a screening aid: it cannot establish that the car is mechanically sound or guarantee that every incident, repair, or modification was recorded. Match any report findings against the title, invoices, seller’s account, and the independent inspection.

Ford’s Blue Advantage Gold Certified checklist, accessed in 2026, lists 172 inspection points and includes VIN, recall, vehicle-history, and scheduled-maintenance checks. That is context for the kinds of records worth reviewing; it does not mean a specific modified Mustang has been inspected or certified, and it is not a supercharged-Mustang-specific inspection.
Build a modification record
For a Ford Performance kit, ask for the purchase receipt, part number, installation date, installer’s repair order, registration information, and maintenance invoices. For another kit, request the equivalent purchase and installation records and identify the installer. Ask who supplied the calibration and whether any later changes were made. If the seller cannot answer, ask the inspection shop to document what it can identify and flag anything it cannot verify.
Have a specialist inspect the installation and its supporting systems
Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection with a shop familiar with modified Mustangs. A general inspection can find many problems, but the mechanic needs to understand the supercharger, its supporting systems, and the changes made to the car. Give the shop the kit identity and any available invoices before the appointment.
Inspect the supercharger installation
Ask the shop to inspect the supercharger, pulley and belt routing, belt condition, intake connections, intercooler and coolant circuit, hoses, wiring, and fuel-system components. The mechanic should look for leaks, damaged or poorly secured connections, improvised installation, abnormal noise, and evidence that parts have been altered. The inspection should also cover fluid condition, engine oil leaks, and cooling performance.
Do not judge the installation by how tidy the engine bay looks. A clean appearance does not establish that the kit is correct for the engine, that the calibration matches the hardware, or that the cooling and fuel systems are working properly. Ask the shop to explain any component it cannot identify and what additional documentation or testing would resolve the uncertainty.

Review service against the correct manual
Use the owner’s manual and kit instructions for the exact vehicle and supercharger rather than applying a generic interval. The 2022 Mustang supplement cited here calls for inspection of the intercooler, intercooler coolant, and supercharger-drive belt every 20,000 miles for its covered configuration. It also lists intercooler and cooling checks at oil-change intervals. These intervals apply only if the supplement matches the car being considered; the correct manual and kit documentation control for other configurations.

Compare the applicable schedule with invoices. A seller’s statement that the car was “maintained on schedule” is less useful than dated records identifying the work. If records are incomplete, ask the shop to identify which checks or services are due or cannot be confirmed under the correct documentation.
Inspect it cold, warm, on a lift, and on the road
Ask the seller not to start or pre-warm the engine before the inspection. A cold start can give the mechanic an opportunity to observe starting behavior, idle, exhaust, warning lights, and noises before the engine reaches operating temperature. It is one part of the assessment, not a diagnosis on its own.
Scan for faults and investigate symptoms
Have the shop scan for diagnostic codes, including current and pending faults, and investigate signs that codes may have been recently cleared. Ford identifies the OBD data link connector as the diagnostic interface; a buyer may also use an OBD-II reader to view stored codes. A generic reader cannot establish the condition of the supercharger, prove that the tune is safe, or substitute for a specialist inspection.
Ask the mechanic to explain what any code means in the context of this vehicle and whether additional testing is warranted. Compression or leak-down testing may be appropriate if symptoms, scan data, or the shop’s judgment support it; it is not a substitute for identifying and inspecting the installed kit.

Road-test it through normal operating temperature
Have the shop assess acceleration and cruise behavior, engine noise when cold and hot, transmission shifts, clutch operation where applicable, steering, cooling, and leaks. A road test long enough to reach normal operating temperature may expose heat-related symptoms that a brief drive misses. One short, uneventful drive does not establish reliability.
Pay attention to whether the car behaves consistently and whether warning lights or unusual noises appear as it warms. Let the mechanic—not just the seller—interpret symptoms and decide whether further diagnosis is needed. Do not attempt a high-speed or hard-acceleration test on public roads to validate a seller’s power claim.
Put it on a lift
Ask the shop to inspect the underbody, chassis points, suspension, and structure for leaks, corrosion, damage, and signs of collision repair or track and curb impacts. The specialist inspection guidance recommends photographing the underbody and checking chassis points, since repairs or damage may not be apparent during a walk-around. A lift inspection also helps the mechanic examine suspension and underbody components that affect both safety and the cost of putting the car right.

Do not assume that a used car inherits coverage because the seller has a warranty booklet, says the kit was dealer-installed, or says a supercharger automatically voids every Ford warranty. The relevant terms depend on the exact kit, model year, purchase and installation history, registration, owner, and the cause of a problem. Ask Ford Performance or the kit manufacturer to confirm the specific vehicle’s eligibility before treating coverage as part of the purchase decision.

The 2021 terms also state that concerns caused by the supercharger are not eligible under the cited vehicle or supercharger coverage. They do not support a blanket claim that installation voids every vehicle warranty: for the specified 2015–2017 Select Parts terms, Ford Performance says installation by an authorized installer will not void the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, while separately excluding concerns caused by the supercharger under the cited coverage. That wording is specific to those terms, not a promise for every kit or model year.

Check fuel, emissions rules, insurance, and the ownership budget
Confirm the required fuel for the exact kit before buying. Ford’s cited kit terms require 91-octane-or-higher fuel for the specified older applications, and the M-6066-M8800 listing states “PREMIUM FUEL REQUIRED [91+ octane].” These requirements belong to the cited products; check the documentation for the car’s actual kit.
Emissions status depends on the kit, model year, and location. The current M-6066-M8800 listing says CARB EO D-231-129 applies for 2024–2025 model years and that the kit is not available for California for 2026. Treat those as listing-specific details that can change; confirm current state and local requirements for the exact car before purchase. Do not assume that a part being sold for one application makes a modified vehicle legal in every state or locality.
Ask your insurer how it handles the supercharger and other modifications, and check any lender or warranty conditions that matter to your purchase. Rules vary by provider and location; the kit documentation alone does not answer those questions. Build the budget around the actual car’s condition and records, including premium fuel where required, tires, brakes, cooling-system service, and maintenance by a shop equipped to work on the setup.

When comparing supercharged Mustangs, use the same criteria for each rather than letting mileage or a larger claimed power number dominate the decision.
- Identity: Are the VIN, model year, engine, kit part number, and installed hardware established?
- Installation and calibration: Is the installer documented, and can the shop assess whether the parts and calibration appear consistent?
- Maintenance: Are service records complete enough to check the correct schedule for that configuration?
- Condition: What did the scan, cold and warm inspection, road test, and lift inspection find?
- History: Do title, VIN, history report, invoices, and physical inspection tell a consistent story?
- Coverage and compliance: Has the manufacturer confirmed warranty status, and have local emissions and insurance questions been checked?
- Near-term costs: What fuel, tire, brake, cooling, or specialist work does the inspection or service record indicate?
A car with less mileage or a higher advertised output is not automatically the better buy. Favor the one with verifiable hardware, a coherent installation and maintenance record, and inspection results you understand. If the seller will not allow an independent inspection, or if important claims cannot be reconciled with the paperwork and the shop’s findings, treat that uncertainty as a purchase risk rather than filling the gaps with assumptions.
