Before paying a deposit, confirm the exact variant and its electric-only range, how its petrol engine works, whether its charging system fits your home and routes, and what the dealer promises in writing for warranty, service and parts. In Pakistan, published range figures for at least one model conflict, while tax treatment and vehicle availability can change. Use a dated specification sheet and a written on-road quotation—not a badge or headline range—as your starting point.
What makes a range-extended EV different?
A range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) uses electric motors to propel the wheels. In the architecture described for the Deepal S05 REEV and Forthing Friday REEV in the Federal Board of Revenue’s 2026 customs notice, a petrol engine runs a generator when battery charge falls below a threshold; the engine is not mechanically connected to the wheels. Fuel can therefore produce electricity that ultimately powers the traction motor, even though the petrol engine does not directly drive the wheels.

This mechanical distinction separates a range extender from a plug-in hybrid whose combustion engine can also transmit torque to the wheels. The FBR notice is about customs classification and those examined vehicles; it does not establish that every model marketed as a REEV uses identical hardware, nor does classification settle a buyer’s warranty, charging or registration questions. Ask the seller to confirm the exact offered variant’s powertrain in writing.
Which Pakistan-market specifications are published?
The FBR notice reproduces specifications attributed to manufacturer websites for two vehicles in its classification notice. These are published figures, not independent road-test results. A Pakistan-focused catalogue gives a different electric-only range for the Deepal S05, so obtain the exact variant’s official dated sheet and test-cycle basis rather than choosing or averaging the figures.

The Deepal figures conflict; the available information does not resolve whether the difference reflects variant, test cycle, rounding or a catalogue error. Do not treat combined range as electric-only range. PakNEV’s snapshot, updated 22 September 2026, reported five REEV models on sale in Pakistan and one announced as coming soon. It is a secondary market catalogue, not a dealer offer or independent validation; confirm availability and pricing with the authorized seller.
Use this buying checklist
1. Identify the exact vehicle and price
- Record model year, variant, assembler or importer, VIN/chassis number, battery size and included charging equipment on the quotation.
- Ask whether the price is ex-factory or on-road, and have registration, freight, taxes and optional equipment itemized.
- Check that the quotation, specification sheet, delivery paperwork and warranty booklet all name the same variant.
- For an import, request customs-clearance and registration documents, then independently confirm the procedure and taxes that apply to that vehicle.
2. Compare range on like-for-like terms
- Keep pure-electric range separate from total range with petrol available to the generator.
- Ask which test cycle produced each range figure. Do not compare unlike cycles as if they were equivalent.
- Request any available assumptions about speed, temperature, climate control, passengers and cargo.
- Map the electric portion against your normal weekly driving and a typical long trip. Ask when the generator starts and how the car manages its battery reserve.
- Ask the seller for the official dated specification for your exact variant. Online estimates are leads, not proof of an equivalent test result.
3. Drive it in both operating states
Test the car on roads and at speeds relevant to your use. If possible, assess it with a charged battery and with the range extender running. Check the energy-flow display and fuel-use information; ask the dealer to explain operating modes, reserve-charge behaviour and warnings. These are buyer checks, not reported test findings.

4. Confirm charging compatibility and access
- Get the AC and DC charging standards, connector type, maximum input power and charging-time assumptions for the exact trim in writing.
- Confirm whether the cable or portable charger is included and whether it is compatible with the car and local electrical supply.
- For a house, have a qualified installer assess supply capacity, earthing, protective devices, cable route, parking location and any required permission.
- For an apartment, obtain written permission and agree on metering and cable routing before relying on home charging.
- Check the routes and locations you actually use, then confirm that a compatible charging unit is operating; maps can become stale.
NEECA’s 2024 rules establish a registration and oversight framework for EV charging infrastructure in KE and DISCO service territories. That framework does not prove that a particular station is available, compatible or working. Confirm charging access for your own car and journeys.

5. Get warranty, service and parts terms in writing
Available sources do not establish comparable current warranty durations, parts stock or service quality across the models. Ask the selling dealer for written answers on:

- Traction-battery warranty duration, mileage limit, capacity or health threshold, transferability and exclusions.
- Coverage for the generator/engine, electric motor, inverter, onboard charger and other high-voltage components.
- Service intervals, required authorized-center visits and any effect on warranty coverage.
- The nearest authorized repair location, its technical capability, local parts availability and expected wait for common components.
- For a used vehicle, how battery diagnostics are performed and whether you receive a state-of-health or fault report.
Verify the named service center directly; a manufacturer’s presence in Pakistan alone does not establish local inventory or warranty performance.
6. Work out your own cost of use
Compare the written on-road quote with any charging installation, electricity tariffs, petrol used while the generator runs, routine servicing, insurance and registration. Ask for the dealer’s basis for fuel consumption in range-extender operation. A realistic comparison needs your routes, electricity tariff, petrol scenario and service schedule; the available sources do not establish comparable model-specific real-world running costs, so they cannot support a generic savings or cost-per-kilometre claim.

FBR’s public vehicle guidance says new vehicles may be imported subject to applicable procedures and duties or taxes. Its used-vehicle guidance describes Personal Baggage, Gift and Transfer of Residence schemes, including age limits and eligibility restrictions; it does not determine an individual buyer’s eligibility or every REEV duty question. Before paying a deposit, confirm the current Import Policy Order, customs classification, documents, provincial registration requirements and final tax treatment for the exact vehicle. The FBR’s 2026 notice addresses the Deepal S05 and Forthing Friday specifically; do not generalize its classification to other models or assume it creates a tax incentive.
A Board of Investment entry describes a value-addition tax withdrawal for specified four-wheel EV imports through 30 June 2026. Because that date had passed by 4 October 2026, treat the measure as historical unless an updated official source confirms an extension or replacement.

The government’s 2025 NEV policy launch release reported a target for electric vehicles to make up 30% of new vehicle sales by 2030, along with projections of 2.07 billion litres in annual fuel savings and 4.5 million tons in emissions reductions. It also announced 40 new motorway charging stations, averaging 105 kilometres apart. These are policy targets, projections and an announcement—not proof of achieved savings, current sales share or operating chargers. Check actual station status for your routes.
Compare models using evidence, not a single “best” label
The available evidence is not complete enough to rank all current Pakistan options. Build your comparison from current documents for the exact variants and your city:
- Local selling channel, variant, model year and written on-road price.
- Battery capacity, pure-electric range, test-cycle basis and source; keep total range separate.
- Generator and fuel-tank details, plus the stated basis for fuel consumption.
- AC/DC charging rates, connector compatibility and included equipment.
- Written battery, generator and whole-vehicle warranty terms.
- Service-center capability, parts access and response time in your city.
- Dimensions and ground clearance for your roads and parking, alongside costs based on your routes and tariffs.
- Import, customs and registration status for the exact vehicle.
Choose only after the range, charging fit, written support and full on-road cost meet your needs. If any of those depends on a verbal assurance, ask for documentation before committing.
