Before paying a deposit, confirm that the exact car can be imported, approved, registered, insured, charged and serviced in your destination country. Get the answers in writing for the specific market version and VIN (or chassis number), and calculate the full landed cost—not just the seller’s price. A China-market car is not automatically equivalent to a similarly named export model.
First, identify exactly which car you are buying
“Chinese electric car” can mean a China-based brand, a car manufactured in China, or a vehicle built for China’s domestic market. Those descriptions are not interchangeable. Customs duties may depend on a vehicle’s origin and legal classification, while approval, charging, warranty and software support depend on the exact vehicle and market version.
Ask the seller for the make, model, model year, trim, battery and drivetrain, steering position, VIN or chassis number, new or used status, and original registration history. Confirm whether it is a China-domestic version or an export-market version. Request the original conformity or type-approval documents, safety labels, manufacturer data sheet, charging specifications and full warranty booklet. A shared model name does not prove the cars have the same equipment or approval.
Can you register this exact car in your country?
Ask the destination country’s vehicle regulator before shipping or paying a non-refundable deposit. Give it the VIN and documents, and ask whether the car can be registered for ordinary road use, what approval route applies, and whether testing or modifications are required. Check whether age, steering side, salvage status or prior registration affects eligibility.

These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not a determination for another country or for every car in the named markets. In the United States, NHTSA’s guidance is explicit: “Moreover, there is no way for NHTSA to discern, from the VIN that has been assigned to a vehicle, or from any other identifying characteristic, whether the vehicle was originally manufactured to comply with all applicable standards.” A seller’s assurance or a familiar badge is not a substitute for the regulator’s answer.
What will the car really cost after import?
Request an itemized, written landed-cost estimate for the specific car, origin, tariff classification and intended import date. Include costs that arise after the advertised purchase price:
- Vehicle price, shipping and transport insurance.
- Customs declaration, broker fees, import duty and any applicable trade-defense duties.
- VAT or sales tax, port and storage charges.
- Approval, inspection, compliance testing and required modifications.
- Registration, title, vehicle tax, delivery and insurance.
Have a customs authority or qualified customs professional verify the classification, country of origin and calculation. Do not assume a car is “Chinese” for customs purposes solely because of the brand, or use a tariff figure quoted for a different producer or date.

For Great Britain, the official vehicle import guidance covers customs and tax handling, arrival notification and the steps leading to approval and registration. The registration guidance lists a £55 imported-vehicle registration fee; confirm the current requirement and amount when applying.

For the EU, do not rely on a single timeless duty rate for China-origin battery-electric vehicles. Measures can vary by producer and change over time. The IEA’s 2026 manufacturing and trade outlook describes producer-specific countervailing duties and the European Commission’s consideration of model-level price undertakings. Check the live rules for the car and import date, including Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/328.
Will it charge on your home equipment and public networks?
Inspect the inlet on the actual vehicle and get the manufacturer’s written specifications for AC and DC charging, voltage and current limits, onboard charger rating, and supported communications. Then ask the vehicle maker, home-charger installer and public charging network whether that exact car works with their equipment. Plug shape alone does not establish safe operation, fast-charging capability or successful communication between the vehicle and charger.

China has GB/T charging standards, including GB/T 20234.3-2023 for a DC coupler, implemented on 7 September 2023, and GB/T 20234.4-2023 for a high-power DC coupler, implemented on 1 April 2024. These standards establish connector specifications; they do not certify that a particular imported car will work with local chargers.
Compatibility can differ even between neighboring markets. Hong Kong’s Transport Department says Type 2/CCS2 connectors and mainland GB/T supply equipment are incompatible without an appropriate adapter; consult its note on EV adapter devices. In the United States, the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation advises: “Until UL 2252 certified adapters become available, customers should only use adapters provided by their vehicle manufacturer for their specific vehicle and use them as instructed.” Check its connector and adapter guidance. Ask whether a maker-approved adapter exists for your exact vehicle and whether it supports the charging functions you need; do not choose a generic adapter by appearance.

Is the warranty valid where you live?
Ask the manufacturer or an authorized local representative—not just the overseas seller—to confirm in writing whether the exact VIN is covered in your country. Separate the terms for the vehicle, high-voltage battery, drive unit, corrosion, paint and roadside assistance. Check:

- When coverage starts, its duration and mileage limit, and any battery-capacity threshold for a claim.
- Exclusions, required servicing and whether parallel imports are excluded.
- Where claims can be made, who supplies parts, and who pays labor and shipping costs.
- Whether software, connected services and roadside assistance work in your destination.
- Which authorized repairer will handle a claim, and what happens if the seller closes.
Treat phrases such as “global warranty” as unconfirmed until the manufacturer verifies coverage and claim arrangements for that VIN and destination in writing.

Before committing, contact at least one local workshop and ask it to confirm support for the precise model and VIN. Establish whether it can access factory diagnostics, obtain parts and perform high-voltage work, and ask about technician qualifications and likely parts lead times. A general ability to repair EVs does not necessarily mean access to this car’s diagnostic tools, parts or manufacturer procedures.
Search the destination safety authority’s recall database and ask the manufacturer to check the VIN for open campaigns. Get written answers on where recall work can be done and who pays for it. A recall listing or remedy for one market version does not establish a remedy for a different vehicle or prove that a local workshop can perform the work.

Will the software, connectivity and insurance work?
Test region-specific features before purchase rather than assuming an overseas car will behave like the local version. Verify navigation maps and language, voice controls, phone apps, eSIM or other connectivity, over-the-air updates, and the availability of driver-assistance features in your country. Ask which features need an account, local network access or a subscription, and whether they remain available after import.
Send the VIN and full specification to local insurers and obtain a quote and confirmation that they will cover the vehicle. Do not assume a policy for a similarly named local model applies to an imported version; equipment, repair costs, approval status and parts access may differ.
How should you compare it with a locally sold EV?
Compare the import with an officially marketed EV in the same class using the same ownership factors—not a China-market sticker price against a local showroom price. Put the documented results side by side:

Walk away if approval remains uncertain, the manufacturer will not validate the VIN or clarify support, charging depends on an unapproved adapter, insurance is unavailable, or there is no competent local repair route. For a complex import, a destination-country homologation specialist, customs or shipping agent, and qualified independent EV inspector may help verify different parts of the transaction; no single service replaces regulator and manufacturer confirmation.
