What to Ask a Car Dealer Before Buying an Electric Vehicle

Ask the dealer about the exact EV’s charging capability, real-world range, battery records, warranty, service access, full price, and written return terms before you sign.

Before you buy an electric vehicle, get clear, written answers about the exact vehicle’s charging equipment, range, battery condition (if it is used), warranty, service options, full price, return terms, and any claimed incentives. Verify model-specific claims against the VIN, trim, manufacturer documents, and official sources—not just a verbal estimate from the dealer.

This U.S.-oriented checklist works for new and used EVs. Bring it to the dealership or send the questions in advance, and keep the answers with the vehicle’s sales documents.

Start with the exact vehicle, not just the model name

EV specifications and coverage can vary by model year, trim, and individual vehicle. Ask the dealer to identify the vehicle by its VIN and exact trim before answering questions about charging, range, equipment, warranty, recalls, or incentives. If you are comparing cars, get the same details for each one; a model-level answer may not describe the car being offered.

Ask for answers and proof in writing

  • “Can you provide the VIN, model year, and exact trim for this vehicle?”
  • “Can you show me the manufacturer document or official specification that supports that claim?”
  • “Can you put the included equipment, coverage, fees, and any promised terms in writing?”

Written answers give you something specific to check against the window label, owner’s manual, warranty documents, vehicle history, and official sources. If a claim cannot be documented, treat it as unverified rather than assuming it is guaranteed.

ChargePoint HomeFlex Level 2 EV Fast Charger, J1772, Smart, Hardwired, 50A
  • Charge with Confidence: ChargePoint builds reliable, flexible EV charging stations for home, business, and fleets. Get 24/7 support and access to hundreds of thousands of North American charging locations.
  • Charge Smart: With the user-friendly ChargePoint Mobile App, you can control your electric car charger, manage reminders, connect to smart home devices, find stations, get data and charging info, and access the latest features. Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
  • Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

Ask whether the EV fits your charging routine

Charging compatibility is vehicle-specific. Connector type, AC charging power, DC fast-charging capability, and included cables can differ, so confirm the exact configuration before buying equipment or planning around a particular charger.

Questions about the car and charging equipment

  • “What connector does this exact vehicle use?”
  • “What AC charging power and DC fast-charging capability does this trim support?”
  • “Which charging cable or equipment is included in the sale, and what costs extra?”
  • “Is this vehicle compatible with the charging locations and connectors I expect to use?”

Ask the dealer to distinguish what the vehicle can accept from what a particular charging station supplies. A connector match alone does not establish the vehicle’s charging speed. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that plug-in vehicles have charging connectors and that connector types can vary. The Department of Energy’s Electric Vehicles for Consumers advises buyers to understand a vehicle’s charging capabilities before buying charging equipment or electrical upgrades.

If you plan to charge at home

  • “What vehicle-side capability should I confirm before choosing a home charger?”
  • “Does the car include any charging equipment, or will I need to obtain it separately?”
  • “What should I verify about my parking arrangement and electrical capacity before paying for installation or upgrades?”

Do not buy a charger or commit to electrical work based only on a general statement that the car can charge at home. First confirm the vehicle’s connector and charging capability, then check whether your parking and electrical setup can support the plan. Installation needs and costs depend on the home and location; the dealer’s answer is not a substitute for confirming those conditions.

Check the range against the trips you actually make

Ask for the official range figure for the exact year and trim, and ask where it appears in the manufacturer’s material or the EPA specification. Then consider your regular routes, not just the rating. An official range figure is not a promise of the distance you personally will get on every trip.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Questions about rated and real-world range

  • “What is the official range for this exact configuration, and where can I verify it?”
  • “How could temperature, heating or cooling, hills, speed, vehicle load, or my driving pattern affect the trips I take?”
  • “Can I test-drive this vehicle on roads and at speeds similar to the ones I regularly use?”

NHTSA explains that thermal management can use energy that otherwise would be available to move the vehicle. Its Electric and Hybrid Vehicles: Battery, Charging & Safety page states: “Thermal management systems keep the batteries within the pack at an optimal temperature – even in harsher environments – but this can negatively affect your driving range since some of the battery’s energy is used for thermal management instead of motor use.” Ask how the vehicle’s rated range relates to your own conditions, but do not treat a dealer estimate or one test drive as a guarantee of future range.

For a used EV, ask for evidence about the battery and vehicle

A battery report can help you understand a used EV, but a number without context is hard to interpret. The reviewed U.S. consumer guidance does not establish one universal battery-health test, degradation threshold, or pass/fail standard for used EVs. Ask for the report itself and the information needed to interpret it for this particular model.

Battery and high-voltage system questions

  • “Can you provide a battery condition or diagnostic report?”
  • “Who performed the test, when was it performed, and what method was used?”
  • “What battery capacity or state-of-health reading does it give, and how should I interpret that figure for this model?”
  • “Has the battery or any high-voltage system component been repaired or replaced?”
  • “Has the vehicle been exposed to flood damage?”

Ask the dealer to explain what the report measures and what it does not establish. Do not rely on a bare capacity or state-of-health percentage as a universal pass/fail result. If no report is available, ask the dealer to say so in writing rather than treating an informal assurance as a diagnostic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

History, title, maintenance, and recalls

  • “Can I see the vehicle history report, maintenance records, and title information?”
  • “What is the vehicle’s recall status, and can we check it using the VIN?”
  • “Can you document any battery, high-voltage, or other significant repairs?”

The Federal Trade Commission recommends obtaining a vehicle history report and checking recalls when buying a used car. Review those records alongside the battery report; neither one replaces the other.

Pin down the warranty and any service contract

Ask separately about coverage for the vehicle, battery, and other high-voltage components. A dealer’s use of the word “warranty” is not enough to show who provides coverage or what repairs it pays for. For a used vehicle, read the FTC Buyers Guide and obtain the written warranty document before signing.

Questions to ask about coverage

  • “Which warranties apply to the vehicle, battery, and other high-voltage components?”
  • “For each one, what are the time and mileage limits, exclusions, deductible, transfer rules, and repair obligations?”
  • “Is this a manufacturer warranty, a dealer warranty, or a separately priced service contract?”
  • “Where can warranty repairs be completed?”
  • “Does coverage include towing or a rental car while the vehicle is being repaired?”

For a used EV, ask which manufacturer coverage, if any, remains and how to verify it with the manufacturer using the VIN. The FTC advises buyers to obtain warranty documents and confirm unexpired manufacturer warranty coverage by VIN. Do not assume coverage transfers or remains in force because a salesperson says it does.

Read the documents before agreeing

Ask to review every warranty and service-contract document before you sign. The FTC Buyers Guide discloses a used vehicle’s warranty status and terms; FTC guidance says it overrides contrary language in the sales contract. Read the guide and contract together, and ask the dealer to explain who is responsible for repairs and what is excluded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A paid service contract is distinct from a warranty. Before buying one, check its price, term, covered parts, exclusions, repair process, and cancellation or refund terms. Ask: “If I cancel, how do I do it, and how is any refund calculated?” Do not treat a service contract as proof that the manufacturer warranty is still active.

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
  • HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
  • CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.

Confirm where you can get the EV serviced

Service access matters if a repair requires EV-specific expertise or the vehicle’s warranty specifies where covered work can be performed. Ask practical questions before signing rather than assuming every nearby repair shop can handle every repair.

  • “Where can I take this vehicle for warranty repairs?”
  • “Which service locations near me can work on this model’s high-voltage systems?”
  • “If the vehicle cannot be driven, are towing costs covered?”
  • “Does the warranty or service contract cover a rental car, and under what conditions?”

Verify the dealer’s answers with the written warranty or service contract and the manufacturer. The useful answer is not only whether service exists, but where it is available and which costs the coverage actually includes.

Get the full price and financing terms

Compare the complete transaction, not just the advertised price or monthly payment. Ask for an itemized out-the-door quote that identifies dealer add-ons and fees, and ask which optional products you can decline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions about the amount you will pay

  • “What is the full out-the-door price, including dealer add-ons and fees?”
  • “Which products or services are optional, and can I decline them?”
  • “What financing rate, loan term, and down payment does this offer assume?”
  • “What is the total amount I would pay over the full financing term?”

Ask for the figures in writing so you can compare offers on the same basis. A monthly payment alone does not tell you the total cost or which add-ons and assumptions are included.

Ask about return terms before you sign

Ask whether the dealer allows returns or cancellations, what conditions apply, and how long you have to act. Get the complete policy in writing before signing; do not rely on an informal promise.

  • “What is your return or cancellation policy for this exact sale?”
  • “What is the deadline, and what steps must I follow?”
  • “Are there conditions, charges, or mileage limits?”

Federal law does not require dealers to provide a three-day cancellation period for vehicle purchases. State law or a dealer’s voluntary policy may provide different rights, so check the rules that apply where you buy. If a policy is not written into the documents you receive, do not assume it applies.

Verify incentives instead of counting on a verbal estimate

Ask whether the dealer is claiming an incentive or credit applies to the exact VIN and transaction, and request the official documentation supporting that claim. Then verify eligibility with the relevant official source. Do not let an estimated incentive silently reduce the price you use to decide whether you can afford the vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Federal clean vehicle credits

As of October 9, 2026, IRS guidance says the new and previously owned clean vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Some earlier acquisitions may remain eligible when the vehicle is placed in service later, subject to applicable rules and reporting requirements. Do not treat a federal credit as a current discount for an acquisition after that deadline. If a transaction may fall under earlier timing rules, ask for any applicable time-of-sale report and check the IRS rules for the exact vehicle and transaction.

State, local, and utility incentives

State, local, and utility programs depend on the buyer’s location and circumstances. They are not covered comprehensively here, so check the current program rules with the relevant official state, local, or utility source. Confirm requirements and timing before including an incentive in your budget.

Use the same checklist for every vehicle you compare

When you have more than one candidate, gather answers for each exact VIN and trim rather than comparing a detailed offer with a vague one. Keep the evidence alongside your notes so you can see what is confirmed and what still needs checking.

  • Charging fit: connector, AC charging power, DC fast-charging capability, access to the charging locations you expect to use, included equipment, and any home setup questions.
  • Range fit: official range for the configuration and how your temperature, routes, speeds, terrain, climate-control use, load, and driving pattern may affect trips.
  • Used-vehicle condition: battery report and method, repair history, flood history, title and maintenance records, and recall status.
  • Coverage and service: remaining vehicle and battery warranty, exclusions and transfer terms, service-contract terms, and realistic repair locations.
  • Transaction terms: out-the-door price, add-ons, financing assumptions, written return policy, and verified—not merely claimed—incentives.

Before you sign: a final document check

  1. Match the VIN and trim on the vehicle and sale documents to the specifications and warranty answers you received.
  2. Collect the written charging-equipment details, any battery diagnostic report, vehicle history and recall information, and maintenance records for a used EV.
  3. Read the Buyers Guide, warranty documents, and any service contract; confirm coverage and cancellation terms in the documents.
  4. Review the itemized out-the-door price, financing terms, and any written return policy.
  5. Verify any incentive claim with the official source that administers it, using the timing and vehicle details for your transaction.

If an answer affects whether the car will work for you or what you will pay, resolve it in writing and verify it against the exact vehicle before completing the purchase.
