Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo verify a classic BMW M5’s engine and drivetrain, first establish the car’s exact VIN, production date, market and claimed version. Then compare that identity with BMW records where available, and have a BMW M specialist inspect the identifiers and installed components in person. A badge, seller’s description or correct-looking engine can support a claim, but none proves that the engine or gearbox is original to that chassis.
What you need to establish
“Correct for this model” and “original to this car” are different claims. An engine may match the general specification for an E28 or E34 M5 yet have been installed later. Likewise, a gearbox can be the right type for the model without being the unit fitted when the car left the factory. And neither an engine-family match nor a matching identifier tells you whether the component is mechanically healthy.

Assess the car on three separate questions:
- Specification: Does the installed engine and gearbox fit the claimed M5 version and market?
- Documented identity: Do available factory records associate the car with the engine and gearbox numbers presented?
- Present condition: What does an independent physical inspection reveal about the installed drivetrain?
Keep those findings separate in your notes and in any purchase agreement. A strong answer to one question does not settle the other two.
Identify the generation, version and market first
Before asking whether an engine is original, make sure you know which car the seller is claiming to sell. Record the VIN or chassis number, stated production date, country or market, body style and the seller’s exact engine and version description. This matters because the E28 had market-specific special versions, while the E34’s engine specification changed during production.

E28 M5 reference points
BMW Group Classic describes the E28 M5’s engine as a modified version of the BMW M1’s M88/3: a 3.5-litre, four-valve-per-cylinder inline-six. Its technical page gives a displacement of 3,453 cc and output of 286 hp at 6,500 rpm. BMW also says the E28 M5 shared the M635 CSi’s manual five-speed gearbox and braking system.
Be cautious when using a production-date range as an identity test. BMW Group Classic’s E28 material gives different date scopes: the model page says production ran from October 1984 to June 1988, while another E28 page lists February 1985 to December 1987. BMW also records 2,241 E28 vehicles produced and sold worldwide between 1985 and 1988; the page does not state a publication year. These dates and the production total are useful context, not a substitute for checking the individual car’s VIN, build information and market.
BMW notes that market-specific special versions existed, including versions for the United States and South Africa, with some engineering and appearance differences. Do not assume that every E28 M5 should match one market’s equipment or appearance.

E34 M5 reference points
BMW Group Classic identifies the 315 hp E34 with the S38B36 engine: 3,535 cc and 315 hp at 6,900 rpm. A major technical revision launched in January 1992 brought the 340 hp version, with the 3.8-litre S38B38 listed at 3,795 cc and 340 hp at 6,900 rpm. BMW’s E34 history also describes a further model revision in 1994.
Those reference points help you test whether the seller’s description and the car’s broad specification agree. They do not create a universal calendar-year rule for identifying an individual car: BMW’s pages differ somewhat in the scope of dates shown. Use the VIN, market and build date together, and get a specialist to interpret the vehicle-specific evidence.
| Generation/version | BMW Group Classic engine reference | Output reference | Drivetrain detail in the cited model material |
|---|---|---|---|
| E28 M5 | M88/3-derived 3.5-litre, four-valve-per-cylinder inline-six; 3,453 cc | 286 hp at 6,500 rpm | Manual five-speed gearbox shared with the M635 CSi |
| E34, 315 hp version | S38B36; 3,535 cc | 315 hp at 6,900 rpm | Gearbox details are not stated in the cited E34 engine reference |
| E34, 340 hp version | S38B38; 3,795 cc | 340 hp at 6,900 rpm | Gearbox details are not stated in the cited E34 engine reference |
BMW’s E34 material also describes chassis changes, including a dedicated tune, tighter dampers, more direct steering and a front braking system 13 mm larger than the prior reference. These details help explain why an inspection should consider the whole car rather than treating the engine as the sole indicator of specification. They are not proof that a particular engine or gearbox belongs to a particular VIN.
Follow a verification sequence
1. Write down the seller’s claim before checking it
Ask the seller to state the generation and version, claimed engine family and displacement, gearbox type, claimed production date and market, and whether they are asserting that the engine or gearbox is original to the chassis. Ask for the VIN or chassis number and any records supporting the claim. Keeping the claim specific makes it possible to compare evidence rather than accepting a general description such as “matching numbers.”

Note any uncertainty in the seller’s answer. “Correct engine” may mean only that the unit is the expected engine family; it should not be treated as a claim that BMW records match its number to the car.
2. Request vehicle-specific BMW documentation
BMW Group Classic offers a digital birth certificate that may include chassis, engine and gearbox numbers, along with production and delivery data. Its order form requests the VIN, engine and gearbox numbers and proof of ownership. BMW cautions that the information available varies by model and age.
Confirm the current process, eligibility, fees and the specific information BMW can provide for the car before relying on the certificate. Do not assume a document will contain every number you want, or that its absence proves a component was replaced. Preserve the original document and note exactly which identifiers it records.
3. Have a specialist inspect the physical identifiers
Give the available documents and the seller’s claim to a qualified BMW M specialist. Ask the specialist to locate and inspect the relevant identity markings on the actual vehicle and compare them with the records. The BMW Group Classic sources do not specify stamping locations or the factory method for determining whether an engine or gearbox is original to one VIN. For that reason, do not rely on a location guessed from an online discussion or on a photograph as conclusive verification.
Ask the specialist to distinguish what they could inspect from what they could not access, and to record the identifiers they observed. If a marking is obscured, inaccessible or inconsistent, treat that as an unresolved question rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
4. Check the engine against the correct version
Use the generation, production information and market to select the relevant factory reference. For an E28, check whether the broad specification aligns with the M88/3-derived 3.5-litre engine. For an E34, establish whether the claimed version corresponds to the S38B36 3.5-litre or S38B38 3.8-litre specification. Compare those references with what the specialist identifies on the car.
A match on engine family and displacement only supports a specification match. It does not establish that the engine is the one installed at the factory. The number records and physical identifiers are needed for a documented identity comparison, and even then the specialist should explain what the evidence does and does not establish.

5. Inspect the gearbox and the rest of the drivetrain
Ask the specialist to document the gearbox identifiers they can inspect, compare them with available records and assess the unit’s operation and condition. BMW identifies the E28’s manual five-speed as shared with the M635 CSi; that model-level fact does not prove that a gearbox in an individual E28 is original to its chassis. For the E34, the cited engine references do not provide a gearbox specification, so obtain vehicle-specific guidance rather than assuming an answer from the engine version alone.
The inspection should also record signs of replacement or modification, leaks, operation and general condition. Ask for observations tied to the actual car, not a blanket assurance based on a test drive or a visual impression. BMW Group Classic describes technical inspection and classic repair or restoration services, but does not define a standardized pre-purchase report or guarantee originality; agree the scope and written findings with the inspector before commissioning the work.
6. Reconcile gaps before committing
Compare the seller’s written claim, factory documentation and specialist report side by side. For every identifier or detail, mark it as confirmed by a record, physically observed, consistent with the model specification, or unresolved. These categories prevent a plausible specification from being mistaken for proof of originality.
If the market, build date, documents or identifiers do not line up, ask the specialist to explain the discrepancy and what further evidence could resolve it. Registration, import and “matching-number” treatment depend on jurisdiction. Check the relevant authority’s requirements and get local specialist advice where the car’s paperwork or history has gaps.
How to interpret the evidence
| Evidence | What it can help establish | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| VIN/chassis information and production or delivery data | The vehicle’s recorded identity and context for selecting the correct model reference | That the currently installed engine or gearbox is original to the car |
| BMW documentation listing engine or gearbox numbers | The numbers BMW has available for that vehicle, subject to the document’s scope | Present mechanical condition or the authenticity of a physical marking not inspected |
| Specialist inspection of physical identifiers | What markings and components are present and whether they agree with available records | Information that could not be accessed or verified; a model-specification match alone is not proof of original fitment |
| Engine family, displacement and output that fit the claimed version | Whether the broad engine specification is plausible for the generation/version | A match between that engine and one specific chassis |
| Operating-condition inspection | Observed condition, operation, leaks and signs of replacement or modification within the inspection scope | Factory originality or a guarantee of future reliability |
Ask for findings that preserve these distinctions. For example, “the installed engine’s family and displacement are consistent with the claimed version” is narrower—and more useful—than “the engine is original” when no vehicle-specific number match has been established.
Questions to put to the seller and inspector
- What is the exact VIN or chassis number, claimed production date and original market?
- Which E28 or E34 version is being claimed, and what engine family and displacement should that version have?
- Is the seller claiming a correct-type engine, a documented number match, or both?
- What BMW records are available, and do they list chassis, engine and gearbox identifiers?
- Which physical identifiers could the specialist inspect, and which were inaccessible or inconclusive?
- What evidence of replacement, modification, leaks or operational problems did the inspection record?
- Do the vehicle’s registration and import documents meet the requirements where it will be registered?
Make the inspector’s scope clear in advance. If the decision depends on originality, ask for a written comparison of accessible physical identifiers against the available records, not just a general mechanical inspection. If the decision depends on whether the car is usable, ensure the report also addresses operation and condition; those are separate questions.
When to pause or renegotiate
Pause the purchase if the seller’s version claim conflicts with the VIN or market evidence, if an identifier differs from available factory records, or if the specialist cannot verify an important marking. A discrepancy is not automatically proof of fraud or a mechanical failure; it does mean the claim remains unproven until it is explained.

Also pause if the seller treats the correct engine family as proof of originality, refuses access for an independent inspection, or will not put the originality claim in writing. Decide whether you would still buy the car if the engine or gearbox proved to be a replacement. If the answer is no, do not base the purchase on an unresolved claim.
For a discrepancy that is explained and documented, retain the explanation and records with the purchase paperwork. For one that cannot be resolved, value and describe the car on what is established—not on a number-matching claim that the evidence does not support.

There is no single fee or fixed inspection package established for every E28 or E34 M5. Before ordering a BMW Group Classic digital birth certificate, check the current price, eligibility, process and likely record coverage for that vehicle. BMW’s order form asks for the VIN, engine and gearbox numbers, plus proof of ownership; have those details and ownership evidence ready, but confirm whether BMW can supply the specific information you need before treating the service as a guarantee of a complete record.
For the independent inspection, request a quote and written scope from the specialist before the appointment. Ask whether the quoted work covers only mechanical condition or also locating and comparing accessible identity markings, documenting the gearbox, and reviewing the BMW paperwork. Those are distinct tasks, and BMW Group Classic’s description of technical inspections and restoration services does not define a universal pre-purchase report. A lower-cost general check may not answer an originality question if it does not include number comparison; conversely, a paperwork review cannot tell you how the drivetrain operates.
A model-specific E28 or E34 M5 workshop manual can be a useful reference for variant specifications, but no particular manual listing or current availability is verified here. Treat it as a way to frame questions about the claimed version, not as an authentication tool: a manual cannot connect a component to a specific VIN, confirm BMW’s records, or assess the actual car’s condition.
Build a clear evidence file
Keep a copy of the seller’s precise written claim, the VIN and market information, BMW documentation, inspection report and any explanation of discrepancies together. Record the source of each conclusion. For example, note whether an engine family came from a model specification, an identifier was physically observed by the inspector, or an engine number appeared on the birth certificate. This makes it harder for a general statement such as “factory M5 engine” to blur a specification check with a documented number match.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask the inspector to identify limits plainly. If a marking could not be reached or read, or a record does not list an engine or gearbox number, the file should say so. A missing record is not evidence of replacement, but it also cannot verify the component’s identity. If a record and physical identifier disagree, preserve both pieces of evidence and ask the specialist what can responsibly be concluded rather than altering or disregarding one side of the comparison.

Before signing, make sure the purchase description reflects what is established. If the car has the correct engine family but no verified chassis-specific match, do not let the written paperwork imply more. If originality is important to the price you are willing to pay, make resolving the relevant identifiers part of your decision, and check any local registration or import requirements with the appropriate authority.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a correct engine code prove that an E28 or E34 M5 has its original engine?
No. An M88/3-derived 3.5-litre engine may fit the broad E28 reference, and an E34 may have the S38B36 or S38B38 specification appropriate to its version, but a specification match does not prove original fitment to a particular chassis. Compare available BMW records with physical identifiers inspected by a qualified specialist.
Can BMW Group Classic confirm an M5’s engine and gearbox numbers?
Its digital birth certificate may include chassis, engine and gearbox numbers, as well as production and delivery data. The information available varies with model and age. Confirm the current process, fees, eligibility and record coverage for the specific car; the order form requests the VIN, engine and gearbox numbers and proof of ownership.
Recommended Free Tools
What does BMW list as the E28 M5’s gearbox?
BMW Group Classic says the E28 M5 shared the M635 CSi’s manual five-speed gearbox. That is a model-level specification, not proof that a particular car retains the gearbox installed at the factory. Have a specialist inspect available identifiers and compare them with vehicle-specific records.
How can I tell whether an E34 is the 315 hp or 340 hp version?
Use the VIN, market and build information alongside BMW’s engine references and a specialist’s physical inspection. BMW identifies the 315 hp version with the 3,535 cc S38B36 and the 340 hp version with the 3,795 cc S38B38; the latter followed a major revision launched in January 1992. Avoid using calendar year alone as a universal identity test, since BMW’s date scopes differ.
How much does it cost to verify a classic BMW M5’s engine and drivetrain?
No single fee applies to every car. Check BMW Group Classic’s current digital birth-certificate fees and likely record coverage, then request a specialist’s quote and written scope. Confirm whether the inspection includes physical identifier comparison as well as mechanical condition; those checks answer different questions.
The Bottom Line
Start with the VIN, production information, market and a precise version claim. Use BMW Group Classic records where available, then have a BMW M specialist inspect the actual engine and gearbox identifiers and condition. A model-correct specification is not proof of originality, and paperwork is not a mechanical inspection—treat each conclusion separately and do not pay for an unverified matching-number claim.
