The reports describe the upright body as a rotor pole and the top stroke as part of the stator.
What does the Tesla logo represent?
Green Car Reports and VentureBeat reported in February 2017 that Musk explained the logo as a cross-section of an electric motor. In that interpretation, the main body of the T corresponds to one of the poles projecting from a rotor, while its upper stroke represents a section of the stator. Green Car Reports published its account on February 2, 2017; VentureBeat published a republication on February 4, 2017.
The explanation gives the familiar capital-T shape a technical reference: it is a simplified visual analogy to motor components, not merely a letterform.
Is it an exact diagram of a Tesla motor?
The reporting supports a broad motor-component analogy, not a claim that the mark is a precise cross-section of a particular Tesla motor. It also does not establish that every Tesla motor is represented by the logo. The T is stylized; the reported explanation identifies what its parts evoke rather than supplying an engineering drawing.

Who designed the Tesla logo?
The logo’s reported meaning and its authorship are separate questions. In the transcript of Tesla’s 2016 annual stockholder meeting, Musk said he worked with graphic designers on the Tesla and SpaceX logos and names. Motor1 reported in 2017 that Musk disclosed the explanation in a tweet. The Green Car Reports and VentureBeat accounts paraphrase the explanation, but the original post’s wording is not verified by those reports here. For that reason, the motor interpretation is best attributed to Musk through the contemporaneous reporting rather than presented as a direct quotation. Motor1’s 2017 account also describes the explanation as coming from a tweet.
