The market was not asking whether Tesla would release its consumer Full Self-Driving software; it asked whether Tesla would launch a public, fully driverless Robotaxi service by June 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Its rules excluded supervised FSD and limited-access programs.
What the Polymarket contract was actually about
The headline phrase “launch Full Self-Driving by July” blurs two different things. Polymarket’s “Will Tesla launch a driverless Robotaxi service before July?” contract hinged on a public launch of a fully driverless taxi service by June 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. The contract rules—not a general impression that Tesla had made progress toward autonomy—defined what counted.
In particular, a software release for private Tesla owners was not enough. Nor did the rules count employee-only operations, invite-only programs, closed betas, or factory self-delivery features as a qualifying public service. A Robotaxi announcement or a limited launch likewise did not, on its own, establish that the condition had been met. Polymarket’s contract page sets out the question and criteria.
Why supervised FSD is not a driverless taxi service
Tesla labels its consumer feature Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The company describes it as an advanced driver-assistance feature used under a driver’s supervision. That is materially different from a taxi service that can operate without a human driver required to supervise it.

Polymarket also had a separate market concerning unsupervised FSD and its own definition and access thresholds. That separate contract should not be substituted for the before-July Robotaxi question; market wording and rules determine the relevant outcome. The separate market page illustrates the distinction.
Why the Austin launch did not settle the question by itself
Fortune reported on June 30, 2025, that Tesla had launched its Austin Robotaxi service the previous week. But the existence of an Austin service was not the same as meeting the wager’s public, fully driverless criteria before the deadline. Whether a launch qualified depended on the contract’s requirements, including access and driverless operation—not simply on whether Tesla had begun offering rides. Fortune’s contemporaneous account discussed the launch against those criteria.

What the “screwed” headline can—and cannot—establish
Polymarket displayed $11.9 million in total trading volume for the market page. That is market-wide trading volume, not a measure of bettor losses, and the displayed figure may change as the page is updated. It does not show how much any individual wagered or whether that person lost money.
The available reporting and contract information do not establish individual traders’ positions, their realized results, or a definitive settlement record. So the evidence supports explaining why the Austin launch did not automatically meet the contract’s terms; it does not support saying that particular bettors lost a specific amount—or that all Tesla supporters who bet on the market were “screwed.” Futurism’s July 1, 2025 coverage used the same headline framing, but the colorful wording should not be mistaken for verified account-level outcomes.
