The patent images reported in December 2025 were identified as a possible preview of the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500—but the filing reportedly did not name the truck. Chevrolet has since officially introduced the next-generation Silverado and confirmed an all-new exterior. That confirms a redesign, not every detail observers read into the earlier drawings.
Was the patent filing really for the 2027 Silverado?
GM Authority’s Jonathan Lopez reported on December 16, 2025, that a U.S. patent filing made December 9 showed an exterior design that appeared to be the next-generation Silverado 1500. The filing reportedly did not identify a vehicle nameplate, so the Silverado connection was the reporter’s inference from the drawings and context—not a model name printed in the filing. GM Authority’s report should therefore be read as an interpretation of patent images, rather than a Chevrolet announcement.
Chevrolet officially introduced the next-generation 2027 Silverado 1500 on June 16, 2026, and describes its exterior as all-new. That later announcement establishes that a redesigned truck is coming, but it does not independently verify every feature attributed to the patent drawings. Chevrolet’s announcement is the source for the production truck’s confirmed lineup and specifications.
What the drawings appeared to show
Lopez’s reading of the black-and-white views pointed to a more upright, blockier front end, a rectangular grille, C-shaped lighting signatures, and bulges in the hood. He also described revised side surfacing, wider fenders, reshaped taillights, and changed bumper details. These are reported visual observations of patent drawings, not a feature-by-feature specification from Chevrolet.
#1 Best Overall
- Front doors open
- Made of die-cast metal
- 1:27 scale measuring 8x3x3 inches
- new in box
Chevrolet’s current product page characterizes the new truck’s exterior as having a bolder, more planted stance and a stronger grille. That language aligns broadly with the impression of a more assertive front end, but it does not confirm every shape or lighting detail visible—or thought to be visible—in a line drawing. Chevrolet also cautions that the vehicles shown are preproduction and that production models may vary. See Chevrolet’s 2027 Silverado page.
Does the patent reveal a new Multi-Flex tailgate?
Not conclusively. A follow-up GM Authority article suggested that one drawing might indicate a revised Multi-Flex tailgate, potentially with a full-width horizontal split. The article said GM had not offered official insight, making the proposed design speculative rather than a confirmed mechanism. The tailgate report does not establish that the production truck will use that layout.

What Chevrolet has confirmed for the 2027 model
Chevrolet lists seven trims: Work Truck, Custom, Silverado (formerly LT), Custom Trail Boss, Trail Boss, High Country, and ZR2. It names four powertrain choices: enhanced TurboMax, 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel, next-generation 5.7L V8, and next-generation 6.6L V8. The announcement identifies the engines and lineup, but the figures below apply only to the specific engines or configuration stated.
| Confirmed item | Chevrolet’s published detail |
|---|---|
| 6.6L V8 | 481 hp and 501 lb.-ft. of torque |
| 5.7L V8 | 402 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque |
| Maximum towing | Up to 13,700 pounds for a Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD equipped with the available Max Trailering Package and 5.7L V8 |
| Displays | 16.3-inch center display and 12.2-inch driver information center, standard across the lineup |
These are manufacturer-published specifications from Chevrolet’s 2026 announcement, not independent test results. Chevrolet says towing and payload figures are for comparison; the capacity of an individual truck varies with configuration, passengers, cargo, options, and accessories. For a specific vehicle’s limits, consult its owner’s manual and door-jamb label.

What remains to be seen before purchase
Chevrolet’s product page says the 2027 Silverado is expected to be available late in 2026, with ordering available later in 2026. Those timing statements may change. The page also notes that depicted trucks are preproduction, so final production appearance and equipment should be checked against the vehicle offered for sale.
When comparing trucks, match the intended use and exact configuration: trim, cab and bed, drivetrain, powertrain, and standard or available equipment. Check the towing and payload rating for that specific build rather than applying the announced maximum to every Silverado. The patent drawings can offer an early visual clue, but they are not a substitute for final production information.
