A car-with-lock or car-with-key warning usually relates to the vehicle’s security or immobilizer system, which checks whether it recognizes the key. A light that flashes after you switch the car off can be normal: it may show that the anti-theft system is armed. If the light stays on or blinks while you try to start the car, two possible explanations are a key-recognition problem or, on some vehicles, a weak smart-key battery. The exact meaning depends on the car’s make, model, and year, so check its owner’s manual before treating the light as a fault.
What does the car-and-lock symbol mean?
It generally indicates the security system or engine immobilizer. The immobilizer looks for a recognized key and can prevent the engine from starting if it does not recognize one. Hyundai’s 2025 US owner manual, for example, says an improperly coded key disables the engine fuel system. That is one manufacturer’s description, not a universal explanation for every car with a similar-looking symbol.
Pay attention to when the light appears. A flashing light after shutdown may be the normal sign that the anti-theft system is armed. A light that behaves unusually during startup, or accompanies a no-start, may indicate a key-recognition issue or another fault. Your owner’s manual identifies the expected pattern for your specific vehicle.
Why is it flashing when the car is off?
It may be normal security-system behavior. Toyota’s 2026 Prius manual says the immobilizer indicator flashes after the power switch is turned off while the system is operating, and stops when the system is canceled. Mazda’s 2026 CX-50 Hybrid manual also describes the indicator flashing while the system is armed. Toyota owner manuals and Mazda’s CX-50 Hybrid manual provide model-specific details.

Do not assume that every flashing pattern means the same thing. Check the security or immobilizer section of your own manual, including whether the light should flash after the vehicle is switched off and what it should do when you start it.
Two possible reasons it won’t turn off
1. The vehicle is not recognizing the key
A coded key may not be recognized because it is the wrong key, its coding is not accepted, or the vehicle cannot reliably detect its signal. Hyundai’s 2025 US manual says, “If the indicator starts to blink, the system does not recognize the coding of the key.” It also notes that nearby metal or another immobilizer key can interfere. Mazda’s 2026 CX-50 Hybrid manual warns that a key placed outside the system’s detection range—for example, on the dashboard or in the glove compartment—may be difficult to detect; radio signals from devices such as phones or transceivers may also interfere. See the 2025 Hyundai owner manual and the Mazda manual.

Try the low-risk checks in your manual: use the correct key, keep it away from other chipped keys and metal objects, and place a smart key in the specified detection area. Follow only the manual’s retry procedure. For example, Hyundai describes cycling the ignition from Lock to ON, or the start/stop button from OFF to ON; Mazda says to move the key within range, switch vehicle power off, and restart. These are different vehicle-specific instructions, not a universal reset.
2. The smart-key battery is weak
On some vehicles, a weak battery in the smart key can cause an immobilizer indicator to blink or the vehicle to have difficulty recognizing the key. Kia’s 2026 US owner manual lists “When the battery of the smart key is weak” as one condition associated with a blinking immobilizer indicator. It describes a model-specific emergency starting method that uses the smart key against the start button. Consult the Kia owner manual for the procedure and your exact vehicle’s instructions before trying an alternative.

If your manual identifies a weak fob battery as a possibility, replace it with the correct type for that specific key. Battery type is not universal, and replacing the fob battery will not resolve every immobilizer warning.
What the light’s behavior can tell you
| When you see the light | What the cited manuals describe | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Flashing after the vehicle is off | Toyota and Mazda describe flashing as the armed immobilizer or security system operating. Toyota; Mazda. | Check your own manual to confirm whether this is the normal armed pattern. |
| Blinking or staying lit during key recognition or starting | Hyundai says blinking means the key coding is not recognized. Kia lists malfunction and a weak smart-key battery among possible blinking-light conditions. Hyundai; Kia. | Check key position and possible interference, then follow the vehicle’s manual. |
| Persistent warning or no-start with the correct key | Mazda advises contacting a dealer if the correct key still fails after three or more tries. Hyundai and Kia also direct owners to dealer help for specified persistent problems. Mazda; Hyundai; Kia. | Arrange vehicle-specific diagnosis rather than assuming a universal reset or replacement part. |
When should you get service?
Contact an authorized dealer or a qualified automotive locksmith experienced with your vehicle’s immobilizer if the correct key is repeatedly rejected, the car will not start, or the light stays on or blinks in a way the manual identifies as abnormal. Hyundai recommends dealer contact after repeated key-coding recognition failure; Mazda advises a dealer after three or more unsuccessful attempts with the correct key. Do not try to bypass or alter the immobilizer.
