It was a performance and appearance package for the Buick GS 455, part of the Gran Sport line that began with the Skylark. In 1970, the GSX paired a 455-cubic-inch V8 with distinctive styling and chassis equipment; buyers could choose the standard engine or the higher-output Stage 1.
Was the Buick GSX based on the Skylark?
Yes, through Buick’s Gran Sport lineage. Buick first used the Gran Sport name on the 1965 Skylark, whose initial Gran Sport version had a 401-cubic-inch V8, according to GM Heritage’s 1970 GSX overview. The GSX came later, based on the GS 455 rather than a standard Skylark.
That distinction matters: the GSX was an emphatic version of an already performance-oriented Buick, not simply an engine swap into a base Skylark. Buick Heritage Alliance’s historical account describes it as a slightly dechromed GS 455 with spoilers, painted trim and decals, taking the existing model further.
What did the 1970 Buick GSX include?
GM lists a 455-cubic-inch overhead-valve V8 rated at 350 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque for the 1970 GSX. The package also brought a Ram-Air hood, special tight suspension, a 3.64 rear end, front and rear spoilers, and graphics. These features combined performance hardware with a conspicuous appearance package.

The GSX show car grew out of two white 1970 GS Stage 1 hardtops set aside from the production line in early September 1969 for show duty. Buick Heritage Alliance says one became the GSX show car and that both appeared at the Chicago Auto Show from February 21 to March 1, 1970. The account cautions that the show car is sometimes incorrectly called a prototype.
How much horsepower did the 1970 GSX have?
The standard 455 was published at 350 hp and 510 lb-ft, according to GM Heritage. Buyers could also order the Stage 1 engine. Buick Heritage Alliance’s historical article puts Stage 1 at 360 hp—10 hp above the standard engine’s published rating—and also cites 510 lb-ft of torque.

| 1970 GSX engine choice | Published horsepower | Torque | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 455 | 350 hp | 510 lb-ft | Standard engine, per GM Heritage |
| 455 Stage 1 | 360 hp, per Buick Heritage Alliance | 510 lb-ft, per Buick Heritage Alliance | Optional engine |
These are historical published ratings, not modern net-horsepower figures, so they should not be compared directly with current vehicles’ horsepower numbers. Buick Heritage Alliance points to the engine’s 510 lb-ft as a key part of its muscle-car appeal; that is the article’s framing, not proof of universal superiority over competitors.
How many 1970 GSXs were built?
GM Heritage reports 678 GSX models built for 1970. Its page lists 178 in Apollo White, with the rest in Saturn Yellow. Hagerty’s 2025 valuation report instead gives 187 Apollo White and 491 Saturn Yellow. Because the white-car counts conflict, the total is the dependable figure to cite here; the color split remains disputed.
Did Buick make the GSX after 1970?
Yes. Hagerty reports that the GSX package continued for 1971 and 1972. The specific colors, equipment and figures described above apply to the 1970 model and should not be assumed to carry over unchanged to those later years.
