General Motors reports nearly 70,000 Electra 225 models produced for the 1964 model year—a meaningful measure of the model’s presence, not proof of a Buick-wide turnaround.
What was the Buick Electra 225?
The Electra 225 was a full-size Buick positioned around space, V8 power and convenience. In its official heritage account of the 1964 model, General Motors lists five body styles and equipment that included power steering, power brakes, two-speed electric wipers with washers, a two-way power seat, courtesy lights and a safety buzzer. Those details illustrate the model’s upscale character; the equipment list should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every year.
GM describes the car as a “mid-sixties, sporty, open-air luxury cruiser.” The nickname “Deuce and a Quarter” is also recorded by GM as a name used by the car’s admirers.
What engine and transmission did a 1964 Electra 225 have?
According to GM’s model-history account, the Electra used a 401-cubic-inch (6.6-liter) V8 from 1959 through 1966. A 425-cubic-inch V8 was available from 1964 through 1966, so the 1964 range included the 401 and an optional larger-displacement engine. The heritage page does not specify engine output.

GM says Electra models adopted the Super Turbine 400, also known as the THM 400, automatic transmission beginning in 1964. These engine and transmission details describe the cited model-year history; they do not establish the specifications of every Electra 225 built during the decade.

Does the Electra 225 prove Buick was reinvigorated?
No single model’s production figure proves a brand-wide revival. The documented 1964 facts support a narrower conclusion: Buick offered a substantial full-size car with V8 power and a suite of convenience features, and GM reports production near 70,000. That makes the Electra 225 useful evidence of Buick’s upscale product identity, but not proof that the car caused a recovery in Buick sales or market position.
A full assessment of Buick in the 1960s and ’70s would need comparable brand sales, market-positioning evidence or contemporary coverage, alongside the Electra’s own history. The documented details here are selective; they do not establish a complete year-by-year account of the car’s styling, equipment, production or changing role during those decades.

How Buick later reused the Electra name
In a June 1, 2022 release, GM said future Buick EV products would use the Electra name, drawing inspiration from Buick’s history. Buick and GMC global vice president Duncan Aldred said, “The Buick brand is committed to an all-electric future by the end of this decade.” That was a corporate statement made in 2022, not confirmation of a current product schedule. The later naming decision is a distinct chapter from the original Electra 225’s period impact.

GM’s historical archive describes holdings that include product catalogs, sales brochures, promotional records, engineering information and service information; its Vehicle Information Kits are another official research route. For an owner or restorer, match a shop manual or other service documentation to the car’s model year and configuration. A general reference to Buick literature does not establish that a particular manual edition fits a particular vehicle.
