The Tesla Model Y recorded a 17.3% significant-defect rate in the German TÜV-Report 2026’s inspection results for vehicles aged two to three years, the highest rate in that report’s 110-vehicle ranking. That is a poor result for roadworthiness inspections, but it does not prove the Model Y is the least reliable car in every sense: the figure does not measure all breakdowns, repair costs, warranty claims, or battery health.
What did the TÜV report find?
In the 2026 edition, the Model Y had a 17.3% significant-defect rate among inspected vehicles aged two to three years. The average for that age group was 6.5%. In the 110-vehicle ranking, the Ford Mondeo followed at 14.3%, and the Tesla Model 3 was at 13.1%. These are rates of significant defects recorded at German periodic technical inspections, not percentages of cars that broke down or became unusable.
The report evaluated about 9.5 million German passenger-car inspection results from 1 July 2024 through 30 June 2025. It covered 216 vehicle types, including 18 fully electric models. The Model Y result therefore describes this inspection dataset, age group, and period—not every Model Y on the road. TÜV Verband’s TÜV-Report 2026 announcement and its report presentation give the scope and figures.
How does the Model Y compare with other young electric cars?
The report shows a substantial spread in significant-defect rates for two- to three-year-old electric cars. These figures are useful context, not a controlled test: the vehicles are different models, and the comparison does not isolate the cause of the differences.

Rates are from the TÜV-Report 2026’s two- to three-year vehicle comparison. The TÜV presentation also lists average mileage: 55,000 km for the Model Y entry, compared with 43,500 km for the age group overall. TÜV SÜD notes that both Tesla models in the comparison had exceeded 50,000 km after two to three years. Higher mileage is relevant context, but the published materials do not provide a mileage-adjusted Model Y defect rate, so the figures cannot show how much mileage explains the gap.
What problems were noted on the Model Y?
TÜV SÜD identifies brake discs and axle suspension as early fault areas for both the Model Y and Model 3. ADAC also names lighting among Model Y inspection complaints. These are categories inspectors found as faults; they do not mean that every Model Y has any of these problems.
TÜV SÜD’s expert Wolz says: “Chassis, brakes, lighting: As the fault catalogs confirm, e-vehicles obviously need maintenance, too.” In its explanation of EV inspection faults, TÜV SÜD emphasizes that many involve components outside the electric powertrain, especially lighting and chassis. See the TÜV SÜD summary of the report.

Why suspension and brake faults may matter on EVs
TÜV Verband managing director Dr. Joachim Bühler attributes some suspension strain to the weight of the traction battery. ADAC relays his explanation that regenerative braking can mean friction brakes are used less often, which can contribute to brake-disc defects and reduced braking function; ADAC recommends occasional firm braking. This is an attributed explanation of potential contributing factors, not proof that battery weight or regenerative braking caused every defect recorded on a Model Y. ADAC’s TÜV-Report 2026 coverage provides that context.

Only if “reliability” is narrowly understood as the significant-defect rate at German periodic inspections in this report’s two- to three-year age group. The ranking does not measure roadside breakdown frequency, repair bills, warranty claims, battery degradation, or reliability in other countries. It also does not establish a direct battery state-of-health ranking. Calling the Model Y the “least reliable car” without those qualifications turns one inspection measure into a broader conclusion the report does not support.
The result is still a useful warning for a prospective buyer. It suggests paying particular attention to roadworthiness items raised in the inspection findings, while remembering that the report gives a cohort-level rate, not a diagnosis of a specific car.
What should a used Model Y buyer check?
Arrange an independent, vehicle-specific pre-purchase inspection rather than relying on the model’s report ranking to judge one car. Ask the inspector to assess the suspension, brake discs, and lighting, and check the car’s inspection and repair records for recurring faults or unfinished work.
Assess battery health separately from the HU result. TÜV Verband says current high-voltage battery examinations largely consist of visual inspection and calls for standardized state-of-health assessment. An inspection pass or defect rate is not a substitute for a battery-health evaluation. TÜV NORD’s used-car checklist can help structure a broader vehicle review.
