A video discussed online in May 2024 reportedly showed a person testing a Cybertruck’s powered front trunk—usually called the frunk—by putting a finger in its closing path. The clip prompted claims about a “sensor update,” but the available account does not establish a verified injury, how the test was conducted, or how every Cybertruck’s frunk behaves. Tesla’s current North American owner’s manual gives the practical guidance: keep people and objects clear before operating the powered frunk.
What the circulated video reportedly showed
A May 2024 discussion in r/technology described a creator testing the Cybertruck’s closing frunk, first with produce and then with a finger in its path. The post’s headline characterized this as a test of a “new sensor update.” That wording reflects the discussion, not a verified technical description of the frunk or its sensors.
The available account is a community discussion of a video, not an independently validated safety test or injury report. The original video and the participant’s identity and Cybertruck ownership were not independently verified in the sources available here, and no medical diagnosis was established. The clip therefore cannot substantiate a count of injured owners or show that all Cybertrucks respond the same way.
What Tesla’s manual tells owners to do
Tesla’s North American Cybertruck Owner’s Manual, which displays software version 2026.32, warns: “Before opening or closing the powered frunk, it is important to check that the area around the hood is free of obstacles (people and objects). Failure to do so may result in damage or serious injury.”
#1 Best Overall
The same manual says: “Use caution around the panel edges on Cybertruck, including the doors, powered frunk, tailgate, and surrounding panels.” It also warns that aftermarket accessories adding weight may cause the powered frunk to close on its own or function unexpectedly. These are manufacturer instructions; they do not establish how often injuries occur, explain the system’s exact obstruction-detection design, or amount to a regulatory finding about the video.
What the available evidence does not establish
- How many people, if any, suffered finger injuries in the incidents discussed, or an injury rate for Cybertruck owners.
- Whether the video is authenticated, who appears in it, or whether that person owns the vehicle.
- How the frunk behaves across different software versions, vehicle configurations, or markets.
- Whether a particular software update fixed or failed to fix a problem, or whether a regulator made a specific finding about the clips.
The sources reviewed include a secondary discussion, Tesla’s current North American manual, and a NHTSA-hosted Tesla Cybertruck manual PDF. They do not establish an independently verified incident history or regulator disposition specific to these videos.

How to operate the powered frunk safely
- Before opening or closing it, check that the area around the hood is clear of people and objects, as Tesla instructs.
- Keep hands and fingers out of the closing path and use caution around the frunk’s panel edges.
- Be alert to added aftermarket accessory weight: Tesla warns it may cause the powered frunk to close on its own or behave unexpectedly.
Do not put a hand in the closing path to test the frunk. The video discussion does not establish a safe way to perform such a test, and an aftermarket accessory or protective item is not established as a solution.
