New Atlas later reported that the demonstrator was electronically limited to about 10 mph (16 km/h) and used scaled-down gyroscopes. It illustrated the idea of an enclosed, two-wheeled electric vehicle that could balance itself; it did not establish retail performance, safety, or production readiness.
What is the Lit Motors C-1?
The C-1 is Lit Motors’ concept for an enclosed, two-wheeled electric vehicle combining motorcycle-sized travel with a cabin and gyro-based self-balancing. The company traces the concept to a 2008 sketch, its first gyro-stabilizer to 2009, and a full-scale concept to 2011. Lit Motors says it built EP-3, its first full-scale driving prototype, in 2012 with full-scale gyroscopes integrated. Those milestones come from the company’s own development timeline.
The video in question is the New Atlas/Gizmag visit and demonstration published June 4, 2012: Lit Motors unveils functioning prototype of its C-1. The key distinction is between a functioning prototype and a consumer-ready vehicle: the video showed the former.
What did the 2012 prototype demonstrate?
New Atlas reported that it saw a functioning C-1 prototype at Lit Motors’ San Francisco workspace. In a later update, the outlet described that proof-of-concept vehicle as electronically limited to about 10 mph (16 km/h). It also reported that the prototype’s two gyros were scaled down and produced approximately half the torque planned for a production model—reported as about 1,300 lb-ft (1,763 Nm). These are details reported by New Atlas, not a certified specification sheet or independent production test.

New Atlas said the demonstrator stayed upright when ridden locally and when pulled sideways by a van. That is evidence of a demonstration under those conditions, not proof of crash protection, road safety at speed, or production-level reliability. The outlet’s later account is available in its C-1 production-plan report, updated with information current as of May 2025.
How was the C-1 supposed to balance?
Lit Motors describes its newer Gen 2 balance system as a pair of counter-rotating, or “scissored,” control-moment gyros. As the gyros spin and precess in opposite directions, they generate torque around the vehicle’s roll axis. The company says an augmented steering system works with the gyros to manage balance and turning response.

In Lit Motors’ explanation, the Gen 2 control system uses countersteering so the driver can steer toward the intended turn while the system manages steering and lean response. The company says this arrangement is intended to let the vehicle balance even when stopped. This is the company’s description of its system; it should not be taken as independent validation of the original prototype’s capabilities. In a 2015 ASME interview, then vice president for CMG Systems Eric Stromswold described the role of the gyros this way: “Basically, the control moment gyros (CMGs) are allowing it to be driven like a car and to actively balance when it stops. There are actually two gyroscopes … one can be a backup for the other.” The ellipsis reflects an omission in the published quotation. ASME also quoted CEO Daniel Kim saying, “We’ve done several tests and there’s still a lot to do, mostly on higher speed driving.” The interview, published August 6, 2015, is Finding the Balance.

Prototype demonstration versus historical production aims
The prototype and the company’s production ambitions are different things. The figures below are dated targets or reported plans—not confirmed specifications for a retail C-1.

Lit Motors’ Gen 2 article also claims 0–60 mph in 3–6 seconds and a lean angle of up to 45 degrees. Those are company-published claims about its Gen 2 system, not independently measured results or confirmed specifications for a production C-1. They should not be combined with the 2015 goals or older plans as if all described one final vehicle.

Is the C-1 available to buy?
The available reporting does not establish that the C-1 is for sale. New Atlas said in its May 2025 update that there was no C-1 in showrooms. Lit Motors’ timeline lists a 2025 subscale technology demonstration and 2025–2026 X-1 prototype development; its March 2026 newsletter listing says the team was adapting gyro stability systems with autonomous driving into the X-1 architecture. These company updates indicate ongoing development activity, but they do not verify a production-ready C-1 or customer deliveries. See the Lit Motors timeline and company news listing.

What the video does—and does not—prove
- It does show: Lit Motors had a working C-1 proof of concept in 2012, and the vehicle demonstrated gyro-based self-balancing in reported low-speed demonstrations.
- It does not establish: that the C-1 met its intended production speed, range, safety, or durability goals; that the quoted performance claims were independently verified; or that customers could buy one.
