Reuters reported that Tesla workers reviewed vehicle-camera images to label objects for driving-system development—and that some former employees said customer recordings were also shared in private internal chats. Those are separate activities: the labeling had a stated work purpose, while the reported sharing included jokes and memes. Reuters could not establish how widespread the sharing was or whether it continued.
What did Tesla’s Autopilot data workers do?
Human labelers identified objects in images and video clips recorded by Tesla vehicles so the company’s systems could learn to recognize things encountered on roads and in garages. Reuters described examples including pedestrians, street signs, construction vehicles, garage doors, lane lines and emergency vehicles. The work was carried out by labelers in the United States and Africa, and Tesla was increasingly automating parts of the process, according to the Reuters report.
In an August 2021 presentation, Andrej Karpathy, then Tesla’s senior director of AI, said the company had found that using an outside provider for datasets on a critical project was not sufficient, adding that the quality was “not amazing.” Reuters quoted him in explaining Tesla’s reliance on in-house data-labeling work. Did employees share private footage from customer cars?
Former Tesla employees told Reuters that, from 2019 through 2022, some employees privately circulated customer-vehicle images and clips in an internal messaging system. They described a range of material, including intimate scenes, crashes and ordinary images turned into memes. Some former employees characterized sharing as a way to get work help; others found it troubling.

Reuters said it had not obtained the files, could not determine how widespread the sharing was, and could not establish whether it continued. The reporting does not show that all data-labeling workers participated. Reuters contacted more than 300 former employees involved in self-driving development; more than a dozen agreed to answer questions anonymously. That describes the reporting process, not the prevalence of sharing.
How did Tesla’s stated privacy protections compare with workers’ accounts?
Reuters described Tesla’s privacy notice as saying that recordings made available for analysis were not linked to a customer account or vehicle identification number. Former employees, however, told Reuters that their work software could display a recording’s location, which could potentially reveal where an owner lived. Those are distinct attributed claims: location visibility does not establish that every recording identified its owner.

Reuters also reported in April 2023 that Tesla had stopped receiving recordings from vehicles while they were off, where owners had previously consented to that collection. This is a historical statement in that report, not confirmation of Tesla’s current collection practices.
What did lawmakers ask Tesla?
On April 14, 2023, U.S. Senators Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal wrote to Tesla seeking information about why recordings were collected, how long they were retained, who could access them, the alleged internal sharing, executive awareness and safeguards for anonymity. Their letter raised questions; it was not a finding of liability or proof that the reported conduct occurred as described.
