Separate costs may include state or local vehicle sales or use tax, title, registration, plates, delivery, or insurance. Which vehicle charges apply depends on the winner’s state, where the car will be titled, whether tax has already been paid, and how the title is transferred. There is no reliable nationwide bill or standard percentage to quote without those details.
Why a prize car can create a tax bill
The Internal Revenue Service treats prizes awarded as goods or services as income in general. IRS Publication 525 (2025) says to include their fair market value in income. A car does not become tax-free because the show gives the winner a vehicle instead of a check: the winner may owe federal income tax on the car’s reported value despite having received no cash to pay that tax.

Keep two amounts distinct: the vehicle’s value included in income and the eventual tax due on the winner’s return. The value is an item used in calculating income; it is not itself a tax bill. The actual federal tax depends on the winner’s overall tax situation, and state income-tax treatment can depend on the winner’s state. The available guidance does not support a universal tax rate or a sample dollar amount that would apply to every winner.

Motor-vehicle sales or use tax is a separate question from income tax. It concerns the vehicle transfer or its registration in a particular jurisdiction, and may be due even though the prize value is already reported as income. Title and registration charges are separate again: some are fees, not taxes. Contest rules may also allocate delivery, insurance, or other ownership expenses differently from tax obligations.

How the car’s value is reported
The IRS instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC say to include the fair market value (FMV) of merchandise won on game shows in Box 3 of Form 1099-MISC. The show or sponsor may provide tax paperwork showing the value it reports. Keep that paperwork with the prize documents and use the form and instructions applicable to the year the prize was awarded.
Do not assume a particular reporting threshold, filing deadline, withholding rule, or form requirement from a general description of prize reporting. Those details can change by tax year. The directly relevant IRS Box 3 instruction establishes that game-show merchandise FMV is included; it does not, by itself, settle every filing or payment detail for a particular winner. Check the current-year IRS instructions, and get tax advice if the reported amount or how to report it is unclear.

The sponsor’s reported figure and a state motor-vehicle agency’s valuation for vehicle tax are not necessarily interchangeable. Ask which value the sponsor will report for income-tax purposes and whether the destination state applies its own valuation procedure to the transfer. Keep any valuation documents the show, dealer, or state provides so the amounts and their purposes are clear.
Why the vehicle tax depends on the title path
There is no single national rule for sales or use tax on a prize car. A state may treat the transaction differently depending on who bought the car, whether the show or sponsor takes title before the winner, where the car was won, whether tax was paid to another state, and where the winner will register it. A state’s own revenue and motor-vehicle agencies are the authorities to consult for the specific transfer.

| State example | What the state guidance says | What to establish for your car |
|---|---|---|
| Iowa | The Iowa Department of Revenue says property bought to be awarded as a prize in a game, raffle, or bingo—including a motor vehicle subject to registration—is not subject to Iowa sales tax for the winner. The Iowa Department of Transportation’s county-treasurer process waives the one-time registration fee for a qualifying prize vehicle when the winner provides proof that it was won. | Confirm that the award fits the state’s prize rule and ask the county treasurer what proof is accepted. The fee waiver is specific to Iowa and should not be assumed elsewhere. |
| Kansas | The Kansas Department of Revenue says that if a prize vehicle’s sales tax has not been paid to Kansas or another state, the winner owes Kansas sales or compensating use tax when registering it. Its guidance distinguishes a sponsor’s purchase followed by a transfer from a dealer transferring title directly to the winner. | Find out whether any tax was paid, to which state, and whether the dealer or sponsor is the first titleholder. Those facts affect which Kansas treatment applies. |
| Texas | The Texas Comptroller addresses motor vehicle tax on a contest-prize transfer. Its guidance also says a Texas resident who wins a vehicle in another state and brings it into Texas owes motor vehicle use tax; valuation procedures may apply. | If the car was won outside Texas, ask how the state will treat its entry and registration and what valuation procedure applies. Do not assume the state where the show was filmed determines the final result. |
| New Jersey | New Jersey’s consumer automotive tax guide says the prize value is taxable income to a New Jersey resident. It describes sales-tax treatment as dependent on the transfer: a dealer transferring title directly to the winner can make the winner liable, while an organization that takes title and then transfers it may receive different treatment. | Confirm whether the dealer transfers title directly to you or an organization takes title first, and ask how that structure affects the tax due under New Jersey rules. |
These examples demonstrate variation; they do not establish rules for every state or local jurisdiction. Even a state example cannot decide a winner’s liability without the actual paperwork and transfer facts. If you live in one state, won the car in another, or will title it somewhere else, ask the relevant agencies how those locations interact before estimating the vehicle tax.
What costs to check before accepting
- Income-tax consequences: The prize’s reported value may affect federal income and, depending on the applicable rules and the winner’s circumstances, state income tax. The IRS’s general rule includes fair market value; no single bill can be calculated without the winner’s tax situation.
- Vehicle sales or use tax: Check whether the destination jurisdiction charges it on this transfer, whether another party already paid tax, and whether the state recognizes that payment. The route from dealer to sponsor to winner—or directly from dealer to winner—can matter.
- Title, registration, and plate charges: Ask the motor-vehicle agency for the charges and documents required to title and register the car where it will be kept. The cited guidance does not establish a national fee amount. Iowa’s qualifying one-time registration-fee waiver is a state-specific exception, not a general exemption.
- Prize terms and ownership expenses: Review the contest rules for who pays delivery, insurance, or other costs of taking ownership. These depend on the particular prize terms; they are not universal charges established by tax rules.
Do not treat every amount due as a “tax.” A title or registration charge may be a fee, while a delivery expense may be assigned by the contest terms. A promise that the show “covers the taxes” also needs specifics: ask which tax, which jurisdiction, and whether the sponsor pays the agency directly or provides funds to the winner.

What to ask the show, sponsor, and dealer
Get answers in writing where possible. The prize paperwork can clarify its reported value, the route the vehicle takes through ownership, and which expenses the sponsor has agreed to cover. Ask for the official contest rules as well as transfer documents; a verbal summary may not show all conditions or deadlines.
- Ask for the prize terms and acceptance deadline. Confirm the date by which you must accept, what steps acceptance requires, and whether the rules assign you any costs.
- Ask what value will be reported and on what form. Request the value the sponsor intends to report for the prize and the tax document it expects to issue. Compare that figure with the paperwork you receive at transfer.
- Trace the title transfer. Ask whether the dealer will title the car directly to you or whether the show, sponsor, or another organization will take title first. Request the planned sequence in writing.
- Confirm who pays vehicle tax. Ask whether the sponsor or dealer will pay sales or use tax, to which state, and what receipt or other evidence you will receive. If the answer is that tax was paid, establish whether it was paid to the state where you will register the vehicle or another state.
- List the other covered and uncovered expenses. Ask who pays title, registration, plate, delivery, and any other charges specified by the contest rules. Do not infer that covering one item means the sponsor covers all of them.
- Get the documents you will need to register it. Ask for proof of the prize award, title or transfer paperwork, tax-payment evidence, and any sponsor letter required by the destination state. Keep copies of the rules and correspondence.
How to check your state’s requirements
Start with the state where the car will be titled and registered, not just the state where the show was filmed. Read the revenue agency’s guidance on motor-vehicle sales or use tax and the motor-vehicle agency’s title and registration instructions. If the rules are not clear for a prize transfer, give the agencies the exact title sequence and payment history rather than asking only whether “a game-show car” is taxable.

- Identify the destination jurisdiction. Confirm the state—and, if required, the local jurisdiction—where you plan to title and register the vehicle.
- Write down the transaction facts. Record where the car was won, who bought it, who will hold title at each stage, the vehicle value provided, and whether a state has already received vehicle tax.
- Ask the revenue agency about tax. Explain that the car is a prize and describe the title path. Ask whether tax applies, how any tax paid elsewhere is treated, and what value the agency uses.
- Ask the motor-vehicle agency about the application. Confirm title and registration charges, proof-of-prize requirements, and the documents needed from the sponsor or dealer.
- Reconcile the written answer with the paperwork. If the planned title transfer or payment differs from what the show told you, ask again before completing registration. Retain receipts and agency responses.
This process is particularly important when the prize is awarded in one state and registered in another. Texas, for example, specifically addresses use tax for a Texas resident bringing in a vehicle won out of state, while Kansas’s guidance makes both prior tax payment and the title route relevant. A state example is a reason to ask a focused question, not a substitute for checking your own transaction.
When professional tax help is worthwhile
Consider consulting a tax professional if the reported prize value is substantial, the amount on the sponsor’s form differs from documents you received, you have income-tax questions beyond the prize itself, or the car crosses state lines and the tax treatment is uncertain. Bring the prize rules, tax form, title documents, payment receipts, and agency correspondence. A professional can assess the prize in the context of your return; state agencies can confirm their own vehicle-tax and registration requirements.
The essential distinction is between reporting the car’s value as income and resolving taxes or fees tied to transferring and registering the vehicle. Neither the IRS income rule nor one state’s vehicle guidance supplies a universal total. The paperwork and the destination jurisdiction determine what you need to do next.
