The performance numbers come from different sources and methods: Audi’s manufacturer claim, BMW’s preliminary estimate, and Car and Driver’s measured Mercedes test. They indicate that all three are exceptionally quick, but they do not establish a like-for-like winner. The same caution applies to price: base MSRP, a configured example, and a publication’s listed starting price are different kinds of figures.

Choose the Audi RS 6 Avant performance if you want a V8 without charging
The RS 6 is the most straightforward choice for a driver who wants a high-output combustion-engine wagon and does not want to plan around plugging in. Audi’s U.S. specification is a twin-turbo V8 paired with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission. There is no electric-only commute to take advantage of, but there is also no home-charging requirement to realize the powertrain’s basic benefits.

Its 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats offer more flexibility than a single-piece backrest when passengers and longer cargo need to share the cabin. That arrangement is useful on paper, but it does not tell you whether a particular stroller, suitcase, bike, or bulky box will fit through the opening or sit comfortably behind the front seats. Bring the items you regularly carry to a dealer visit and test the actual load-in.
Choose the BMW M5 Touring if output and plug-in flexibility are priorities
The M5 Touring has the highest stated horsepower and torque in this group, and its plug-in hybrid system gives it an electric-driving mode. BMW’s launch material described an approximately 25-mile preliminary electric range; the word “preliminary” matters, and that figure should not be treated as a guaranteed distance on every route or in every condition. Whether the hybrid system is valuable to you depends in part on having a convenient place to charge and a daily route that makes electric operation useful.
BMW’s published cargo figures require care. Its August 2024 U.S. launch release estimated up to 57.6 cu ft, while the current U.S. page’s FAQ lists 27.2 cu ft. The available information does not establish a common measurement basis for those numbers, so neither should be silently substituted for the other. Ask the dealer which configuration and seat arrangement the figure describes, and judge the wagon with your own cargo rather than relying on a headline volume alone.
Size also deserves attention before you commit. BMW’s U.S. page lists the M5 Touring at 200.6 inches long, 77.6 inches wide, and 59.7 inches high. Those dimensions can affect garage fit, tight parking spaces, and maneuvering on narrow streets. Measure your garage and check access to your usual parking before assuming that a wagon’s body style makes the car easy to live with.

Choose the Mercedes-AMG E53 Wagon if you want plug-in range and a lower listed starting price
The E53’s cited EPA-estimated electric range is 41 miles, compared with BMW’s preliminary launch estimate of approximately 25 miles. That is a potentially meaningful distinction for a buyer who can charge at home and whose ordinary trips are short. It is not a direct real-world comparison: the figures have different status and sourcing, and actual electric distance varies with conditions and use. Consider your own trip pattern, and confirm the current EPA label for the exact vehicle before buying.
Power output depends on configuration. Car and Driver reports 577 hp without the optional Dynamic Plus package and 604 hp with it, so a listing for the package-equipped figure should not be read as the output of every E53 Wagon. Its test recorded 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds; the same publication notes that the vehicle’s 161-hp electric motor does not move the heavy wagon strongly on its own. That distinction matters if you expect electric mode to feel like a small, light electric car rather than a quieter way to cover some trips.
Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking lists the E53 at a lower starting price than the other two wagons. Because a separate test article gives a different price/configuration, use the ranking figure as that publication’s listing, not as a guaranteed dealer quote or a direct comparison of identically equipped cars.

Published prices here are not perfectly aligned by date or method. Audi’s official U.S. product page lists a starting price; BMW’s launch release is from August 2024, while BMW’s current page showed a configured vehicle; and Car and Driver’s ranking supplies starting prices for all three. The ranking’s October 9, 2026 access snapshot lists the E53 at $94,700, RS 6 at $132,095, and M5 Touring at $129,350. Those editorial ranking figures differ from the manufacturer-page figures above, particularly for the BMW and Audi.

Do not use these numbers as if they were same-day, same-equipment out-the-door quotes. Options, destination charges, taxes, dealer fees, and local inventory affect what you actually pay. Before deciding, request a current window sticker and written quote for the exact vehicle available near you. For the BMW, distinguish a base MSRP from the $125,300 configured example; for the E53, ask which equipment and package configuration underlies the price you are offered.
How to decide whether a performance wagon will work every day
1. Start with your charging situation and real commute
If you cannot reliably charge where you park, a plug-in hybrid’s electric mode may contribute less to your routine than its range figure suggests. If you can charge at home or work, estimate how often your ordinary round trips fall within the electric range shown for the exact vehicle, while leaving room for weather, speed, and other conditions to affect actual distance. The Audi is the only non-plug-in hybrid among this shortlist; the BMW and Mercedes pair combustion engines with electric drive.
2. Load-test the space you will actually use
Published cargo volume does not reveal the shape of the load area, the height and width of the aperture, or how rear passengers fit when the seats are occupied. Take the gear that regularly travels with you—such as a child seat, stroller, luggage, sports equipment, or a pet carrier—and check whether it fits without forcing an awkward compromise. Fold the rear seats, inspect the load floor, and confirm that the seat arrangement still works for the people who ride in back.

3. Drive the exact trim on the roads you use
High power does not tell you whether the ride, seat comfort, visibility, parking feel, or cabin behavior suits your normal week. Test the exact trim and options you would buy, not merely another version of the same model. Include rough pavement, highway speeds, stop-and-go traffic, tight turns, and the parking conditions you face routinely. Audi specifies RS-tuned adaptive air suspension, but the evidence here does not establish a controlled comfort comparison against the BMW or Mercedes. Your own drive is the useful test.
4. Check dimensions, ownership support, and the real quote
Confirm that the vehicle fits your garage and local parking before purchase; the BMW’s listed length, width, and height provide a concrete starting point for that check. Ask nearby dealers about current stock, delivery timing, warranty terms, and service access for the exact model. The evidence here does not provide a matched ownership-cost, warranty, maintenance, insurance, or repair-cost comparison, so do not infer that a lower listed price means lower total cost over the time you plan to own the car.

Efficiency and electric range: compare the labels carefully
Car and Driver’s 2026 wagon ranking lists combined fuel economy of 22 mpg for the E53, 16 mpg for the RS 6, and 13 mpg for the M5 Touring. These are figures from that publication’s ranking, not a guarantee of what a specific driver will achieve. Plug-in operation complicates a simple mpg comparison because a charged vehicle may use grid electricity for some trips; the cited summary does not give a common energy-cost calculation across the three.
The Mercedes’ 41-mile figure is described by Car and Driver as EPA-estimated, whereas BMW’s approximately 25-mile figure is a preliminary estimate in its August 2024 launch release. These are not equivalent evidence types, and they do not promise that every owner will cover that distance electrically in everyday use. Check the current EPA label and the vehicle’s window sticker, then compare the stated range with your own commute and charging access.

For any of the three, acceleration figures are not an invitation to test performance on public roads. Their speed potential belongs on a track or other lawful, controlled setting; daily driving decisions should prioritize visibility, stopping distance, road conditions, and safe speeds.
Which one should you buy?
Pick the Audi RS 6 Avant performance if your main requirement is a powerful V8 wagon and you do not want the ownership routine to depend on charging. Pick the BMW M5 Touring if its plug-in flexibility, very high stated output, and body dimensions suit your route and parking. Put the Mercedes-AMG E53 Wagon near the top of your list if its plug-in format and the ranking’s lower listed starting price are attractive, but verify the Dynamic Plus package and exact quote because output and price depend on configuration.
There is no evidence here for a universal daily-driver winner. The useful tie-breaker is the exact car you can buy locally: how it rides on your roads, fits your people and cargo, parks at home, works with your charging routine, and is supported by a dealer you can reach. A loaded test drive and current written quote will answer more than comparing the three acceleration numbers alone.
