GM ended the EV1 program in 2003, recalled the leased cars, and returned most of them to be crushed and recycled in 2005. The record supports a mix of economic and practical reasons for the program’s end—not proof of one hidden cause. A small number of cars went to museums and universities, and GM says it is working to make a surviving EV1 visible to the public in 2026.
What happened to the GM EV1?
The EV1 was an early production electric car developed from GM’s 1990 Impact concept. GM began building EV1s in 1996, and consumers began receiving them through leases in 1997. The National Museum of American History reports that GM built 1,117 cars; Smithsonian Magazine described the total more approximately as “some 1,100.”
The EV1 was never sold outright. Smithsonian’s archival account says GM offered it only as a lease, citing concerns about supplying parts and maintaining the cars over their lifetimes. When the final leases expired in 2003, GM recalled the fleet into storage. A few cars went to museums and universities; the Smithsonian archive says the rest were crushed and recycled in 2005.

| 1999 | The second generation arrived; the Smithsonian archive describes reduced consumer interest in it. Smithsonian archival description. |
| 2003 | The program was canceled and final leases ended; GM recalled cars into storage. The museum attributes cancellation to high production costs and a small market. National Museum of American History. |
| 2005 | Most recalled cars were crushed and recycled, according to the Smithsonian archive. Smithsonian archival description. |
| 2026 | GM says Project V212 aims to make a surviving EV1 visible to the public around the car’s 30th anniversary in November. This is a stated goal, not confirmation that the restoration is complete. GM’s retrospective. |
Why did GM cancel the EV1?
The institutional accounts point to several factors rather than one decisive explanation. The National Museum of American History says GM cited high production costs and a small market. The Smithsonian’s archival description adds limited range, a lack of public charging stations, and reduced interest in the 1999 second generation. It also notes that the lease-only arrangement was unattractive to many potential drivers.

Those accounts describe the rationale and obstacles recorded by the institutions; they do not establish the precise weight each factor carried in GM’s internal decision. The evidence supports a program constrained by economics and market conditions, not a single exclusive motive.
Why did GM take the EV1 back and crush most of the cars?
Because the EV1 was leased rather than sold, GM retained the cars when the leases ended. The Smithsonian archive records that the returned fleet was stored, that a few cars went to museums and universities, and that the remaining cars were crushed and recycled in 2005. The recall and destruction are documented events; by themselves, they do not prove that a particular outside interest caused the program’s cancellation.

Was the EV1 canceled because it failed?
That depends on what “failed” means. The program ended, and the museum accounts describe a small market alongside high costs and practical limitations. That is not the same as evidence that the car had no value or that one factor alone doomed it. The sources establish the outcome and offer institutional explanations, but they do not settle every debate about GM’s motives or the EV1’s long-term potential.

In a 2026 retrospective, GM says a surviving car is the subject of Project V212, with the goal of making it visible to the public for the EV1’s 30th anniversary in November 2026. GM’s statement describes an intended public-facing restoration; it does not say the work is already finished.
