The Honda VT1100 Shadow’s appeal comes from a substantial liquid-cooled V-twin, a low-slung cruiser layout and, on the Sabre, a shaft final drive. But “VT1100” describes a family of motorcycles—not one unchanging specification—so details depend on the year and trim.
What gives the VT1100 Shadow its cruiser character?
The 2005 and 2007 Honda Shadow Sabre specifications show the mechanical combination clearly: a 1099cc, liquid-cooled 45-degree V-twin paired with a five-speed transmission and shaft drive. The engine uses SOHC three-valve heads, two 36mm constant-velocity carburetors and digital ignition with two spark plugs per cylinder. Those are Sabre specifications, not a guarantee that every VT1100 has identical equipment. Honda’s 2005 Sabre specifications and 2007 Sabre specifications document the named model years.
The Sabre’s geometry reinforces its cruiser format. Honda lists a 27.2-inch seat height and 64.6-inch wheelbase for the 2007 VT1100C2. These measurements describe a low seat and long chassis; they do not, by themselves, establish how comfortable or easy to handle the motorcycle will feel to a particular rider.
Why does shaft drive matter?
The VT1100C2 Sabre uses shaft final drive. Unlike a chain, a shaft drive does not require routine chain lubrication and adjustment. That is a practical reduction in recurring chain maintenance, not a maintenance-free drivetrain: the final drive still needs inspection and any service specified for that exact motorcycle.

Which VT1100 Shadow are you looking at?
The VT1100 name covers multiple models, including the standard Shadow, ACE, ACE Tourer, Spirit, Aero and Sabre. Their specifications and equipment vary by model and year; even transmission details differ across the family. A general “VT1100” description is therefore not enough for choosing parts, interpreting a specification or buying a manual. Use the full model designation and year, then verify details against documentation for that motorcycle. The family overview can help orient you, but check precise specifications in year-specific Honda documentation.

These figures are Honda’s specifications for the Sabre in the stated model years, not measurements for every Shadow 1100. Honda’s 2005 release is dated June 1, 2004, and its 2007 release is dated June 2, 2006. California equipment may differ slightly from the 2005 specifications.
How should you identify a bike before ordering a manual or parts?
- Confirm the year and complete model designation. Check the motorcycle’s identifying information rather than relying on a listing that says only “VT1100.”
- Match the manual’s coverage to that designation. Haynes lists a Clymer manual for the VT1100C Shadow covering 1985–1996 and a VT1100 Shadow Series manual covering 1995–2007. Check the exact listing and its stated coverage before ordering. Haynes’ motorcycle manual catalog provides the coverage listings.
- Use the catalog’s identification options for parts. The Megazip genuine-parts catalog supports lookup by year, frame number or VIN. Confirm that the result matches the bike’s configuration before buying. Megazip’s Honda parts catalog provides those lookup routes.
Is the VT1100 a good buy?
The specifications establish what the Sabre offers on paper: a large liquid-cooled V-twin, low seat, long wheelbase and shaft drive. They do not establish a family-wide reliability record, used-market value, fuel economy, comparative performance or an individual motorcycle’s condition. For a specific used bike, base the decision on its year and trim, documentation, condition and fit for your needs rather than assuming all VT1100s are interchangeable or that one trim is universally best.
