On Dodge muscle cars, R/T means “Road and Track.” Dodge describes it as a performance designation, not a promise that every R/T has the same engine, equipment, or track preparation. To know what a particular car has, check its model year and vehicle line.
What does R/T mean on a Dodge Charger?
Dodge’s current explanation is that R/T stands for “Road and Track.” The brand says the designation highlights performance features intended for street and track racing. That wording describes Dodge’s intent for the badge; it does not establish that every R/T is equipped or prepared for competition.
The distinction matters because R/T has appeared across different Dodge vehicles and model years. The letters tell you the name of the performance designation, but not a complete technical specification.
What does the R/T badge tell you about a car?
It identifies the vehicle as an R/T version in Dodge’s lineup. It does not, on its own, tell you the engine, horsepower, drivetrain, body style, or equipment. Those details vary by model and year, so use the vehicle’s specific model-year information rather than treating the badge as a fixed equipment checklist.

What does R/T mean on the 2026 Dodge Charger?
Dodge’s 2026 Charger FAQ describes the Charger R/T with a standard-output 3.0-liter twin-turbo SIXPACK inline-six and says it is offered in two- and four-door configurations. Dodge’s 2026 model-year announcement gives that R/T a maximum output of 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque. These figures apply to the 2026 Charger R/T, not to all cars wearing an R/T badge.
At the time Dodge published the FAQ, it listed a U.S. starting MSRP of $49,995, with a $2,000 additional MSRP for four-door models. Those are source-dated prices and may change; check Dodge’s current listing for the price and availability in your market.
R/T remains in use beyond the Charger. Stellantis lists R/T versions in current Dodge lines, including Durango R/T models. Names, engines, and availability can differ by vehicle and market.
How does R/T differ from SRT?
R/T and SRT are separate Dodge performance designations, but the R/T letters alone do not provide a model-by-model comparison of their engines or equipment. To compare two cars, start with the same vehicle line and model year, then compare their published engine, output, drivetrain, body style, and equipment. A badge comparison without those details can be misleading.

Dodge’s current definition establishes what the letters mean, and period-specific emblems document R/T applications on vehicles such as the 1970 Challenger and Charger. The available sources do not establish the first year Dodge introduced the designation or which model first carried it, so a precise origin-year claim should not be assumed.

R/T emblems are not necessarily interchangeable. For example, Mopar’s catalog identifies an emblem for the 1970 Challenger R/T and 1970–71 E-body grille, while a parts retailer lists a Mopar-licensed 1970 Dodge Charger R/T hood emblem. Before ordering a replacement, confirm the car’s year and model, the emblem’s location, and the part number against the vehicle and catalog listing.
