Trevor Paddenburg’s 2014 PerthNow feature follows a Saturday-night cruise of about 60 cars and the people behind it. Members described their club as a source of identity, friendship and belonging; the same report also documented safety concerns and illegal modifications. It is a snapshot of one group and one night—not a survey of Perth’s car clubs, or evidence of what that club is doing today.
What Paddenburg’s report covered
Published on 26 January 2014, the feature follows members of Unforgotten Carclub on a night drive from Hillarys toward Yanchep and back. Paddenburg opens with headlights strung along Old Yanchep Road, describing modified cars with beefed-up engines, body kits and loud stereos. The reported count—about 60 cars—belongs to that particular cruise, not to the club’s total membership.
The story asks what gives “these men – and women – their passion for petrol.” That phrasing captures the feature’s question, but its anecdotes do not establish the makeup or motivations of Perth’s car-club community as a whole.
Why members said the cars and club mattered
Participants described the hobby as more than owning or modifying a vehicle: it offered a social circle and a shared interest. One member, a car stereo technician, spoke about a heavily customized Toyota HiAce as a “nightclub on wheels.” Another participant, Kara Mullane, said: “The car club is my family now,” she said. “Family” is her description of her own connection, not a claim about every member’s experience.

The club also presented itself as organized and community-minded. A co-founder described meetings, charity runs and attempts to work with police. Those details show how the group represented its aims in the article; they are not independent measures of its impact.
What the story said about safety—and what it did not
The feature records public suspicion, concerns about unsafe driving, licence losses and members’ accounts of risky behaviour or illegal modifications. Those claims need to remain attached to the people and situations described; the report does not establish how common such conduct was among members, much less among Perth enthusiasts generally.

Crucially, Paddenburg says no burnouts, speeding or drag racing occurred during the cruise he observed. That observation does not erase the article’s separate accounts of behaviour elsewhere or in the past, and those accounts should not be recast as events witnessed on that particular drive.
Co-founder Marc Jones was quoted as saying: “Not everyone is an angel but we tell them to save it for the right place – official days at the track (Kwinana Motorplex),” he said.” The quote reflects his stated approach, not proof that every member followed it or that the reported modifications complied with road rules.

How this 2014 snapshot fits Perth motoring culture
The feature is a useful record of one modified-car club’s social world and of the tension between belonging and public concern around car culture. It is not a current directory, a representative study or a reliable guide to today’s club membership. The sources available do not establish whether Unforgotten Carclub or its activities continue.
Perth Car Club is a separate present-day organization. Its club description presents a broad interest in vehicle history, construction and cars’ place in society, and says membership nominations are closed because of capacity. It should not be treated as a successor to Unforgotten Carclub or as an equivalent to the group in Paddenburg’s story.

Other organized motoring activity provides context, but describes different communities and events. The Council of Motoring Clubs WA history traces its coordinating organization to a 1969 combined display by five clubs; the organization says its Perth Classic Car Show has run for 50 years and attracts several hundred vehicles and thousands of attendees. Those figures concern the classic-car show, not the 2014 night cruise.
RAC WA’s history traces the formation of its predecessor, the Automobile Club of Western Australia, to 1905. Its milestones timeline dates the Perth roadside patrol to 1926 and the touring department to 1928. This is evidence of long-running organized motoring in WA, not a link between RAC and the independent club in the feature.

Current club and vehicle-concession details
Anyone looking to join a club or understand vehicle concessions should check current, organization-specific information rather than rely on a 2014 newspaper feature. The WA Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure maintains an approved motoring-club resource. Eligibility and permitted-use rules can change, so consult the government’s current guidance before making decisions; a club summary is not a substitute for the rules.
