In the Stirling-engine designs discussed here, a displacer moves sealed working gas between hot and cold spaces; pressure changes then move a separate power piston. “Free piston” describes the mechanism, not a single engine cycle.
What makes an engine free-piston?
In a conventional piston engine, a crankshaft constrains piston travel and converts reciprocation into rotation. In a free-piston arrangement, the reciprocating motion is not set by that crank mechanism. The term covers a mechanical arrangement rather than a thermodynamic cycle: the documented examples here use the Stirling process, but “free piston” alone does not mean “Stirling engine.”
A 1975 translated patent record for a William Taylor Beale design describes a Stirling-process machine in which the working and displacer pistons have no direct mechanical linkage. Their behavior is coupled through the working gas instead. Read the DE2524479A1 patent record.
How does a free-piston Stirling engine work?
Gas moves between hot and cold spaces
The engine contains a closed working gas. Heating and cooling the gas as it moves between hot and cold spaces changes its pressure. The displacer shifts the gas between those spaces; it is not the part that directly produces the useful output in the same way as the power piston.

Pressure moves the power piston
Pressure variations act on the power piston and drive its reciprocation. The pistons’ motions are not mechanically linked by a crankshaft in the Beale-type design described in the patent record; gas pressure provides the coupling. The power piston can be connected to an output device such as a linear alternator or hydraulic pump. The specific load depends on the design.
These examples should not be generalized to every free-piston engine: other arrangements may use different cycles, working fluids, linkages, or output systems.

Why can a free-piston Stirling engine be hard to start?
Starting requires an initial displacer movement that transfers gas and begins the pressure changes needed for the engine to run. A 1977 self-starting Stirling-engine patent identifies seal “stick” friction as a possible obstacle: friction can impede the small initial motion.
The patent proposes resiliently supported seals that permit a limited range of low-friction displacer movement before the seal seats for ordinary operation. Its abstract describes seals that “permit a limited range of friction-free displacer piston movement for allowing a starting perturbation of displacer piston position.” This is the inventor’s disclosed design, not proof that every free-piston engine has the same starting problem or uses this solution. How can vibration be reduced?
Reciprocating components can transmit inertial forces to the engine’s mounting structure. A 1983 patent describes adding a secondary mass tuned to move out of phase with the displacer and power piston. The intended effect is for the moving masses’ inertia to substantially cancel, reducing the force transmitted to the mount.
This describes the patent’s design intent, not independently measured vibration performance. The patent record does not establish how much vibration a particular engine would eliminate in service. Read US4418533A.

What did early development claims say about free-piston engines?
A. L. London’s 1954 SAE paper, Free-Piston and Turbine compound Engine–Status of the Development, reviewed development history and discussed mechanical simplicity, compactness, torque-speed characteristics, and fuel economy comparable to conventional diesel engines. These are claims reported in a historical paper, not current comparative measurements or a modern assessment of production engines. What should you compare when evaluating designs?
There is no consistent modern test dataset in these sources for ranking free-piston designs. To compare a specific engine with another, look at the design details that determine how it works and what it is intended to do:

- Thermodynamic cycle and working fluid: establish whether the engine is Stirling-cycle or uses another process, and identify the working gas if stated.
- Linkage and load coupling: check whether pistons are mechanically linked and how reciprocating motion reaches the output.
- Starting method: find out how initial movement is produced and whether seal friction is addressed.
- Vibration control: distinguish a balancing concept, such as an out-of-phase mass, from measured performance.
- Intended output: identify whether the design is meant to supply electricity, hydraulic power, heating, or cooling.
A patent can establish what its inventors disclosed and claimed; by itself, it does not validate efficiency, durability, vibration levels, or commercial performance.
