About 2.2% of U.S. light-duty vehicles were plug-in electric at the end of 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). That total includes battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). BEVs alone made up about 1.6%. The count covers passenger cars and light trucks—not just cars—and describes vehicles on the road, not new-vehicle sales.
What does the 2.2% figure count?
The EIA counted 5.8169 million electric light-duty vehicles among 267.1111 million light-duty vehicles in the United States at calendar year-end 2024. Its published combined share is 2.2%, rounded to one decimal place. The underlying counts are based on S&P Global Mobility Vehicles in Operation figures as of year-end, so this is an official compiled estimate rather than a census of every vehicle. EIA’s 2024 electric light-duty vehicle overview provides the counts and methodology.
“Light-duty” is the important qualifier: EIA’s category includes passenger cars and light trucks weighing no more than 8,500 pounds. The total excludes off-road and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as self-registered government-owned vehicles. It is therefore more precise to call 2.2% the share of the U.S. light-duty fleet than the share of cars alone.
Does the figure include hybrids?
Yes, it includes plug-in hybrids, but not conventional hybrids that cannot be plugged in.

- Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs): Run on electricity stored in a battery and do not use liquid or gas fuel during operation. EIA counted 4.3513 million in 2024—about 1.6% of all light-duty vehicles, calculated from its counts.
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs): Can be plugged in to charge and can also use a combustion engine powered by liquid or gas fuel. EIA counted 1.4656 million.
- Conventional hybrids: Use an electric motor and combustion engine but do not plug in. They are not part of EIA’s combined BEV-and-PHEV electric-vehicle total.
The BEV and PHEV counts together equal 5.8169 million vehicles. EIA’s definitions and counts appear in its electric light-duty vehicle table.
Why is this different from the percentage of new vehicles sold?
The 2.2% figure is a fleet share: it describes the vehicles counted as being in operation at the end of 2024. It is not the percentage of vehicles sold during 2024 that were electric. Sales share uses new sales in a specified period as its denominator; fleet share uses all vehicles in the defined on-road fleet. The two percentages answer different questions and should not be compared without labeling the measure and period. EIA distinguishes its annual registered-vehicle totals from sales data in its guide to U.S. electric vehicles and charging stations.

Why might another source give a different percentage?
Vehicle categories and denominators vary. For example, the Federal Highway Administration’s 2026 overview says that plug-in electric vehicles represent 1% of registrations of cars, trucks, and buses, while hybrids represent 3%. Those are rounded figures for a broader vehicle scope, with hybrids shown as a separate category; they are not directly interchangeable with EIA’s 2.2% share of light-duty vehicles that combines BEVs and PHEVs. FHWA’s “Our Nation’s Highways 2026: Motor Fuel” gives that broader registration context.
When comparing electric-vehicle percentages, check four things: whether the numerator is BEVs, BEVs plus PHEVs, or all hybrids; whether the denominator is the existing fleet or new sales; which vehicle types are covered; and the date or period measured.
