OEM stands for “original equipment manufacturer.” In car ownership the abbreviation can refer to three different things: a company that supplies components for new vehicles, a component made by that kind of supplier, or, in some industry shorthand, the automaker itself. On a repair estimate or parts listing, OEM tells you where a part comes from, not whether it is the right part for your car or whether it is better than the alternatives. This guide explains how to read the label, what U.S. and U.K. rules say about it, and how to decide between OEM and aftermarket parts for a specific repair.
Reading OEM in a repair estimate or parts listing
Because the term has more than one meaning, start by checking which one the seller or shop intends. In most parts listings, “OEM” points to one of these:
- The supplier as a company. Many automakers buy components from specialist manufacturers. Those suppliers are the original equipment manufacturers for the parts they build.
- The part itself. An OEM part is a component made to the specification used for vehicle assembly, whether it carries the automaker’s badge or the supplier’s.
- The automaker. Some industry usage treats OEM as shorthand for the vehicle maker. This is less common in parts shopping, but you may see it in trade or warranty contexts.
When a listing says “OEM” without further detail, ask which brand made the part and whether it is sold through the vehicle maker’s own parts channel.
OEM, genuine, and aftermarket: what each label tells you
These three words are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things. The table below separates what each label signals from what it does not prove.

| Label | What it usually signals | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine | A part sold through the vehicle maker’s branded parts channel. Cars.com uses this sense of the word to distinguish maker-branded parts from supplier-branded ones. | That a part sold under another brand is inferior, or that a maker-branded part is the only correct choice for every repair. |
| OEM (supplier-made) | A part made by the company that supplies the vehicle maker. Cars.com cites ACDelco and Motorcraft as examples of supplier brands in this category. | That the part is identical to a maker-branded part sold under a different label. Verify the specific part number and application. |
| Aftermarket | A part made or sold outside the vehicle maker’s branded parts channel. AutoZone notes these may have different grades, lower prices, broader availability, or designs for specialized uses. | That the part is equivalent to OEM, or that it is inferior. Quality, price, availability, and fit vary by brand and by part. |
The practical point is that “OEM” and “aftermarket” describe sourcing, not a grade. A particular aftermarket part may be a sound repair choice, and a particular OEM-labelled part may still be the wrong fit if the application is wrong.
Why the exact vehicle matters more than the label
U.K. government consumer guidance warns that vehicles of the same make, model, and year can need slightly different parts. Build changes mid-year, trim packages, engine options, and market-specific equipment can all change the part number. A part that is labelled correctly for one car can still be wrong for yours.

What U.S. federal rules say about aftermarket parts in repairs
In the United States, OEM parts are not mandatory for most repairs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) addressed this in an interpretation letter dated April 17, 2015. Acting Chief Counsel O. Kevin Vincent wrote:
“Use of an aftermarket part is permitted by Federal law as long as the repair shop does not knowingly make inoperative the compliance of a required safety system.”

Two limits follow from that position:
- Required safety systems. A repair business may not knowingly make a required safety system inoperative. A non-OEM replacement is permitted only if it does not do that.
- Standardised replacement equipment. Some replacement items are subject to federal equipment standards. NHTSA’s letter lists lamps and reflectors, tires, windows and windshields, brake hoses, and seat belt assemblies.
These rules concern federal law. State law, insurance requirements, and the terms of a repair contract or warranty can still require OEM or specific parts, so check those before a repair is booked.
Body panels and crash performance: a gap in the evidence
Federal rules do not require replacement body parts such as fenders, bumpers, and hoods to be crash tested, according to the same NHTSA interpretation family. NHTSA’s letter goes further. Acting Chief Counsel John Womack wrote in a separate interpretation (file 14247.ogm; the letter’s date is not shown in the retrieved text):

“NHTSA has not conducted any studies or investigations specifically dedicated to determining the ability of replacement body parts to withstand an impact when compared to O.E.M. parts.”
This means the question of whether an aftermarket panel protects occupants or performs in a collision the same way as an OEM panel is not one the federal agency has answered. It is not evidence that aftermarket panels fail, and it is not evidence that they perform equally. If the repair involves structural or crash-related parts, ask the repairer how the specific part affects the vehicle’s required safety systems and whether the part is approved for your vehicle.

Choosing between OEM and aftermarket for a specific repair
No single answer covers every repair. Compare the options on these points:
- Fitment and part number. Confirm the part fits your exact vehicle, not just the make, model, and year.
- Safety role. For brakes, lamps, seat belts, tires, glass, and other safety-related items, check whether a federal equipment standard applies and how the part affects required systems.
- Source and authenticity. Buy from a seller you can trace. Recall-related parts should come through a traceable channel; the U.K. guidance says legitimate manufacturers or suppliers can trace and replace recalled faulty parts.
- Warranty terms. Compare the length and conditions of any warranty on each option, including whether labour is covered.
- Price and availability. Aftermarket options are often cheaper or easier to source, but this varies by brand and part, so compare quotes for the same part number.
- Repairer comfort. Ask whether the shop is willing to install the part and stand behind the work.
Avoid decisions based on the label alone. An OEM-labelled part from an unknown seller and an aftermarket part from a reputable brand can both be poor choices, or both good ones, depending on the application.
Regional scope
The U.S. federal material above applies to federal law in the United States. The fitment, counterfeit, and recall guidance comes from U.K. government consumer advice, and it should not be assumed to apply in other countries without checking local rules. Cars.com’s definition of OEM and the supplier-brand examples date from September 13, 2018, and AutoZone’s page on aftermarket parts does not state a publication date in the text reviewed, so check the current brand lineup before relying on a specific name.
If you already know your vehicle and the repair you need, start with the part number from your vehicle’s parts catalogue, then compare the options above before choosing a source.
