A Honda Pilot can make sense if you need three rows, but two things deserve more attention than a model-year reputation or a quick test drive: whether your regular passengers and cargo actually fit, and whether the exact vehicle has open recalls or documented repairs. For a used Pilot, verify its VIN-specific recall status and maintenance history before negotiating. For a new one, compare the trim and drivetrain you would actually buy—not just the starting price.
Will the Pilot fit your people and their everyday cargo?
Judge the Pilot with your normal routine in mind: who rides in each row, what needs to go in the cargo area, and whether you expect to use all three rows at once. A three-row layout does not guarantee enough room behind the third row for your usual load.
Test the third row and cargo area together
Edmunds lists 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row in its 2026 Pilot overview. That is a figure for the 2026 overview, not a guarantee for every model year or configuration. Bring the stroller, sports bags, mobility equipment, or other bulky items you regularly carry, and see whether they fit with the seats in the positions you actually use.
Have the people who will regularly ride in the second and third rows sit there, too. Check access to the back row, comfort on a longer drive, and whether installing child seats leaves enough usable seating and cargo room. A short drive with only the driver aboard will not answer those questions.

What does a new 2026 Pilot cost by trim?
Edmunds’ 2026 overview listed the following starting prices, including destination. These are a dated snapshot, not a dealer quote; prices and equipment can change. Confirm current pricing and what each vehicle includes with the dealer.
| 2026 trim and drivetrain | Listed starting price including destination |
|---|---|
| Sport, FWD | $42,395 |
| Sport, AWD | $44,495 |
| EX-L, FWD | $44,695 |
| EX-L, AWD | $46,795 |
| TrailSport, AWD | $50,595 |
| Touring, AWD | $51,295 |
| Touring Blackout, AWD | $52,295 |
| Elite, AWD | $53,695 |
| Black Edition, AWD | $55,195 |
Edmunds describes the 2026 Pilot as part of the generation introduced for 2023 and lists both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions among its trims. Compare the equipment on the specific vehicles you are considering, then get written, itemized dealer quotes. The starting-price range does not tell you what financing, insurance, fuel, or maintenance will cost for your circumstances.

What should you verify on a used Pilot?
Do not treat a model year’s reputation as proof that an individual vehicle is sound. A careful used-car decision depends on the car’s history and condition, as well as the results of an inspection.
- Recall status: Check the vehicle’s VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and ask the seller for documentation of completed recall repairs. A model-year search is not a substitute for the VIN lookup.
- Service and ownership records: Ask for maintenance records and the vehicle’s history. Look for gaps or inconsistencies and have the seller explain them.
- Independent inspection: Arrange a pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic. A clean-looking vehicle or a seller’s assurances do not establish its mechanical condition.
- Fit and configuration: Confirm the actual trim and drivetrain, then test the seating and cargo arrangement you need. Do not assume another year’s specifications apply.
- Purchase terms: Compare the complete price, warranty coverage, and financing terms—not only the advertised payment or starting price.
Which recalls deserve special attention?
Two reported issues are useful prompts when checking certain used Pilots. Neither year range means every vehicle in it is affected: recall applicability and completion must be confirmed for the individual VIN.

| Reported issue | Vehicles and risk described | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel-pump impeller | Honda’s December 2024 notice covers certain 2016–2021 Pilots. An incorrectly molded impeller may deform over time and make the pump inoperative, potentially preventing the vehicle from starting or causing power loss or stalling. | Confirm VIN inclusion and whether the repair is documented. Honda describes a no-cost fuel-pump-module replacement and estimates about 1.5 hours for the repair; the dealer visit may take longer. |
| Rear-subframe corrosion | An Associated Press report in June 2026 said campaign 26V367000 covers certain 2016–2022 Pilots among a larger group of Honda and Acura vehicles sold in 23 named states and Washington, D.C. Corrosion at rear-suspension mounting points may lead to suspension failure. | Check the VIN and the vehicle’s region-specific applicability. The AP reported that dealers would inspect and, as needed, reinforce, repair, or replace affected parts at no cost. |
For the rear-subframe campaign, AP reported Honda’s estimate that about 1% of the listed population had the defect. That estimate is for the population covered in the report, which includes more than Pilots; it is not a finding that 1% of all Pilots have the problem.
Use the VIN, not a year-range guess
NHTSA says its recall lookup shows unrepaired recalls and that recalls do not expire. Enter the specific VIN and ask the seller or dealer for records showing whether any applicable work was completed. If a recall appears open, ask an authorized dealer what repair is available and arrange it rather than assuming a model-year label settles the question.

Can a model year tell you which Pilot is most reliable?
Not by itself. Consumer Reports’ 2024 page says its reliability score is based on its latest subscriber survey of 2024 Pilot owners, but that information does not establish a reliable ranking of all Pilot model years here. It also does not provide comparable fuel, maintenance, or repair costs for the decision between specific vehicles. Do not turn a survey description, online anecdotes, or a year range in a recall notice into a universal reliability verdict.
For the vehicle you are considering, give more weight to its documented maintenance, VIN-specific recall completion, and independent inspection than to a broad claim that one year is automatically safe or problematic.

How should you compare two Pilots before deciding?
Compare the actual vehicles side by side. For a new Pilot, get written quotes for the trim and drivetrain you want. For a used one, include its condition and records alongside price; a lower asking price does not account for missing service history or unresolved concerns.
Quick Recap
- Does the exact seating and cargo arrangement work for your regular trips?
- Are the trim, drivetrain, and equipment the ones you intend to buy?
- For a used vehicle, can the seller provide maintenance and recall-repair records?
- Does the VIN lookup show any unrepaired recall?
- What did an independent pre-purchase inspection find?
- Have you compared the full written purchase terms, warranty coverage, and costs relevant to your own use?
