The car is a coupe, not a factory-designated hot hatch: its unusual optional Canopy/Sportbak rear section is what gives it the raised, wagon-like profile.
Which Nissan is the “lifted hot hatch”?
The title describes the shape, not Nissan’s formal body-style name. Nissan called the car the EXA coupe; in North America, the closely related market identity was the Pulsar NX. The eye-catching Canopy or Sportbak arrangement is a removable rear roof/body section, rather than a separate generation of hatchback.
Nissan’s heritage record says the third-generation Pulsar N13 arrived in May 1986 and its coupe branch became the EXA (KEN13) in October 1986. Export-market cars could be configured with either a rear hatch or canopy, while Japanese regulations did not permit that arrangement. The unusually tall silhouette comes from this changeable rear section, which is why the car can look like a hatchback with a raised rear roof.
Specifications varied by market and trim. For its 1986 Type B example, Nissan lists a 1,598 cc CA16DE inline-four, 120 PS at 6,400 rpm, 137 N·m at 5,200 rpm, 1,080 kg curb weight and a 2,430 mm wheelbase. Those figures describe that Type B, not every EXA or Pulsar NX. Nissan Heritage Collection

What have Nissan Pulsar NX examples sold for in the U.S.?
The available U.S. results show a wide spread, but they are two individual transactions for different trims and years—not a matched comparison or a market-wide price guide.
| Sale | Recorded result | What the record identifies |
|---|---|---|
| 1988 Nissan Pulsar NX SE, November 22, 2023 | $20,638 | Hagerty sale record; SE coupe, with 9,300 miles shown on the record |
| 1989 Nissan Pulsar NX XE, June 6, 2025 | $10,250 | Auction-history aggregation page; different trim and later sale |
The higher SE result does not prove that Sportbak cars generally sell for more, or that a typical example is worth either figure. Year, trim, mileage and condition signals, and sale date differ; two results cannot show which factor explains the gap. The records also do not provide a condition-adjusted comparison. How should the Australian guide figure be read?
A 2021 Australian market review citing the Japanese Classic & Performance Value Guide listed the EXA at A$6,400 for 1983–91, based on five recorded sales. The same guide listed NX/NXR at A$4,100 from seven recorded sales. These are dated Australian guide figures, not current U.S. transaction values. Unique Cars, 2021
The review also gave A$25,000 for the Pulsar ET (one recorded sale) and A$32,350 for the Pulsar GTi-R (six recorded sales). Those are distinct Pulsar variants, not direct EXA/Pulsar NX comparisons, and should not be used to price one. The review notes that special cars can command more; its figures remain tied to that guide and market.

What determines what an EXA or Pulsar NX is worth?
A useful comparison needs to match the car and the market, rather than treating every EXA/NX as interchangeable. Check these factors against the specific vehicle:
- Market and currency: compare Australian guide figures with Australian evidence and U.S. auction results with U.S. results; do not combine A$ and U.S. dollars into one estimate.
- Year, trim and engine: an SE and an XE are different configurations, and Nissan’s Type B specifications cannot be assumed for every market or trim.
- Rear-body configuration and completeness: establish whether the car has the standard rear hatch or Canopy/Sportbak section, and whether the relevant parts are present and usable.
- Mileage and condition: the available sale records carry different mileage or condition signals. Without matched evidence, they do not support a reliable numerical adjustment.
- Sale date and evidence type: a 2021 guide, a 2023 auction result and a 2025 auction result answer different questions and are not interchangeable.

So what is one worth today?
The defensible answer is that documented U.S. individual sales include a 2023 SE result above $20,000 and a 2025 XE result near $10,000. The available evidence is too sparse and unlike-for-like to set a reliable current range for an ordinary 1986–1990 EXA/Pulsar NX. For a particular car, use recent completed sales from the same market and compare year, trim, canopy configuration, mileage and condition; treat the two U.S. results as reference points, not a valuation formula.
