In the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, he rides a different bike: the supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 Carbon.
Which Kawasaki does Maverick ride in the original Top Gun?
The motorcycle in the original 1986 film is the Kawasaki GPZ 900R Ninja, also written GPz900R. Kawasaki identifies the screen bike as a Ninja GPZ 900R in its company materials. Kawasaki’s 2016 retrospective specifically describes Cruise riding a 1984 GPz900R Ninja in the film, while the company’s 2022 release uses the model name without a year.
Exact model-year labels are not completely consistent across sources. Motorcycle Classics says Kawasaki introduced the GPz900R late in 1983 as a 1984 model, but its detailed feature is titled “1985 Kawasaki GPZ900R.” The most reliable concise identification is therefore the model itself: GPZ 900R Ninja.
Is the motorcycle in Top Gun: Maverick the same?
No. The 2022 sequel features Maverick on a supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2 Carbon, rather than the original film’s GPZ 900R. Kawasaki says it supplied four Ninja H2 Carbon motorcycles and two restored Ninja GPZ 900R motorcycles to the sequel’s production team; the restored GPZs do not make the on-screen sequel bike the same model as the H2 Carbon.

| Film | Maverick’s motorcycle | Engine detail established by the sources |
|---|---|---|
| Top Gun (1986) | Kawasaki GPZ 900R Ninja | Motorcycle Classics lists a 908cc liquid-cooled, DOHC inline-four and claimed output of 113 hp at 9,500 rpm for the 1985 GPZ900R it covers. |
| Top Gun: Maverick (2022) | Kawasaki Ninja H2 Carbon | Kawasaki describes it as supercharged. |
What made the GPZ 900R notable?
Motorcycle Classics describes the GPz900R as the first production motorcycle to feature a liquid-cooled transverse four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. Its listed 908cc displacement and claimed 113 hp at 9,500 rpm refer to the publication’s featured 1985 motorcycle; they should not be treated as universal figures for every year or market.

The GPZ 900R is a collectible older motorcycle, not a modern substitute for the sequel’s H2 Carbon. The cited sources identify the film bike and offer historical context, but do not establish current prices, roadworthiness, insurance costs, or parts compatibility. For a real motorcycle, confirm its year and market specification with a knowledgeable seller or mechanic rather than relying on the movie association alone.
