Marjorie Taylor Greene’s reported remark was not that electric cars have high gasoline prices. At a June 2024 rally in Las Vegas, she said, “If you think gas prices are high now, just wait until you’re forced to drive an electric vehicle.” Battery electric vehicles run on electricity, not gasoline, so comparing their running costs means comparing electricity for charging with gasoline for a comparable car—not looking for an EV gas price.
What did Marjorie Taylor Greene say?
At a Sunday rally for Donald Trump in Las Vegas, Greene said, as quoted in Futurism’s June 11, 2024 report, “If you think gas prices are high now, just wait until you’re forced to drive an electric vehicle.” The report says attendees booed after a pause, then quotes her saying, “America is sick of it.”
The phrase “gas prices for electric cars are too high” comes from the report’s headline and framing; it is not Greene’s exact wording. Her quoted line contrasted current gasoline prices with the prospect of being required to drive an EV. Futurism’s account is secondary reporting; the sources available do not include an official rally transcript or a primary recording for independent verification.
Do electric cars use gas?
Not all vehicles described as electric are the same. A battery electric vehicle (BEV) is powered exclusively by electricity stored in a battery and does not use gasoline as its propulsion fuel. Other electrified vehicles can use gasoline:

- Battery electric vehicle: Runs on electricity and has no gasoline engine.
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle: Can drive on electricity or use a gasoline engine; gasoline use depends on the driving mode and conditions.
- Conventional hybrid: Uses liquid fuel, such as gasoline, and a small battery that recovers energy through braking. It is not a battery EV or a plug-in hybrid.
The EPA explains the differences between these vehicle types in its guide to green vehicles and electricity.
How should you compare EV charging costs with gas?
“Gas price” is not a literal fuel-price measure for a battery EV. To compare operating costs, look at what it costs to drive a comparable distance in vehicles of a similar class: electricity used for charging in the EV versus gasoline consumed by the other car. The answer depends on local electricity and gasoline prices, vehicle efficiency, the time period, and whether charging is done at home or at public stations.

The EPA says charging a plug-in vehicle is typically cheaper than filling a gas tank, but that is not a guarantee for every driver or charging arrangement. Its charging-cost guidance explains the factors involved, and its vehicle comparison tool lets drivers use local prices and driving habits. Electricity and gasoline are different kinds of energy and are billed in different units, so comparing their per-unit prices alone does not establish which car costs less to operate.
What does the often-cited 60% savings figure mean?
A U.S. Department of Energy analysis published May 17, 2021, estimated that the national-average cost to fuel an EV was about 60% lower than for a gasoline vehicle. Its comparison used prices from March 31, 2021: $1.16 per eGallon versus $2.85 per gallon of regular gasoline. Those are historical national averages, not a current estimate or a promise of savings for a particular driver. Local energy prices, vehicle efficiency, and charging circumstances can change the comparison.

Futurism reported online mockery, including Stephen King’s response: “You can’t make this crap up.” The same report also described supportive comments, including claims that gas prices were being manipulated to encourage EV purchases. Its examples do not measure how representative either reaction was, and the report did not substantiate that allegation.
