Yes, a disruption could put pressure on parts of Europe’s car industry—but the five-to-six-week warning was a conditional forecast made in May 2025, not a current prediction or proof that Europe’s factories were about to shut down. The risk came from a concentrated supply chain for rare-earth permanent magnets used in some electric motors. The International Energy Agency (IEA) later documented sourcing problems and some production cuts or suspensions after China introduced export controls in April 2025. It also reported that trade volumes began recovering from June and soon returned to pre-control levels.
What the five-to-six-week warning actually meant
On 25 May 2025, The Daily Galaxy reported a warning attributed to a Berylls by AlixPartners report: if supplies did not resume quickly, some assembly lines could stop by mid-June. That was a conditional forecast made against the supply conditions and stockpiles understood at the time. It was not a claim that all European car production would stop, and its mid-June 2025 horizon has passed.
The underlying Berylls report was not independently reviewed for this account, so the precise stockpile estimate and forecast should be treated as claims reported by The Daily Galaxy, not as independently verified measurements. The later IEA account helps assess the broader supply risk, but it does not turn that original warning into a confirmed Europe-wide production stoppage.
Why rare-earth magnets matter to car production
The concern is not simply that China has rare-earth deposits. The industrial bottleneck is further downstream: refining rare earths and manufacturing permanent magnets. Those magnets are used in some electric motors, so a shortage of suitable magnets or related inputs can constrain the production of affected motors and the vehicles that depend on them.

That exposure is not identical across every car or motor design. The available evidence does not establish that every vehicle uses the same rare-earth materials, the same magnet configuration, or a motor equally vulnerable to supply interruption. Nor does it show that a shortage in this chain would automatically halt every assembly line. A disruption becomes a production problem when a manufacturer cannot obtain a required component or qualify an alternative in time.
How concentrated is the supply chain?
The IEA’s Energy Technology Perspectives 2026 says China accounts for about 90% of rare-earth refining and nearly 95% of global permanent-magnet production. These figures describe different stages of the chain: refining turns mined material into usable inputs, while magnet production makes a component used in motors and other applications.

That concentration creates a bottleneck risk even when mines, vehicle factories and final assembly are located elsewhere. A carmaker may have multiple vehicle plants and component suppliers, yet remain exposed if a critical material or magnet comes through a highly concentrated stage of production.
What happened after China introduced controls in 2025?
China announced export controls in April 2025 on seven key rare earths and related compounds, metals and magnets. The IEA reports that the measures were followed by sourcing difficulties, as well as some production cuts or suspensions in April and May. These are evidence of real disruption in parts of the supply chain, but they do not establish a shutdown of Europe’s car industry as a whole.

The disruption was not uninterrupted. According to the IEA, trade volumes began recovering from June 2025 and soon reached pre-control levels. That recovery matters: it distinguishes a period of acute supply pressure from a continuing, unbroken collapse in flows. It does not mean the concentration risk disappeared, or that every company had equal access to supply.
What is known about controls now?
Control measures can change, and the latest detailed chronology available here is a secondary analysis from the DACH region rather than an official Chinese notice. That analysis reports that some controls introduced in October 2025 were suspended until November 2026, while some earlier licensing requirements remained. As of 5 October 2026, this should be read as a reported chronology, not a definitive statement of the law applying to a particular shipment. Exporters and buyers need to check the relevant official Chinese notices and licensing requirements for current transactions.

A European Commission decision from August 2026 adds context about the region’s industrial capacity: it says most of the listed advanced materials are not currently sourced or processed in Europe. That supports the broader point that Europe faces capacity challenges, but it is not evidence that a particular material is unavailable to a carmaker or that a specific vehicle-production shortfall has occurred.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could the supply risk “wreck” Europe’s car production?
It could cause serious disruption for affected manufacturers if a critical magnet or its inputs became unavailable and no qualified substitute could be supplied in time. The evidence supports concern about concentrated supply and shows that controls were associated with sourcing problems and some production cuts or suspensions in 2025.

Please note these are small‑dimension magnets; refer to product images and size chart for exact dimensions before purchasing
- Important Usage Reminder: Neodymium magnets are brittle. Do NOT allow magnets of different sizes to snap violently together, as impact may cause chipping or cracking. Keep away from pacemakers and electronic screens. Not suitable for small children without adult supervision. Not recommended for stainless‑steel / glass refrigerator doors. The magnetic flux of our product is below 50 kG²/mm²
It does not support the stronger claim that China’s control of rare-earth supply will inevitably wreck European car production. The IEA cautions that its capacity analysis does not fully simulate the effects of a disruption. The reported recovery in trade volumes from June 2025 also makes it inaccurate to present the 2025 episode as one continuous production emergency. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Europe’s exposure is a structural vulnerability that can become an acute bottleneck, not proof of a certain or industry-wide collapse.
What would make the supply chain more resilient?
Resilience depends on more than finding additional mines. The relevant stages include mining, refining, magnet manufacture and delivery of the finished component. Increasing supply at one stage does not by itself establish that a vehicle maker can obtain a qualified magnet or motor component when needed. Likewise, replacing a supplier is different from changing a motor design; both can involve qualification and scaling, but the evidence reviewed here does not provide comparable lead times or demonstrate which route would work fastest for particular European manufacturers.
| Supply-chain stage | Why it matters | What the available evidence establishes about an alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Mining | Provides rare-earth-bearing material, but does not itself produce refined inputs or finished magnets. | No like-for-like European alternative capacity or scale-up timeline is established in the IEA capacity analysis cited here. |
| Refining | Converts mined material into usable inputs; the IEA says China accounts for about 90% of rare-earth refining. | The IEA identifies concentration and capacity exposure, but does not fully simulate disruption effects or establish a replacement timeline. |
| Permanent-magnet manufacture | Produces magnets used in some electric motors; the IEA says China accounts for nearly 95% of global production. | The cited evidence does not give a comparable timeline for qualifying and scaling non-Chinese magnet supply. |
| Finished motor or component | Is the part a vehicle maker must ultimately source and qualify for its production needs. | The cited material does not compare specific European suppliers, vehicle programs or component substitution timelines. |
These limits do not mean alternatives are impossible. They mean that broad claims about how quickly Europe can replace a concentrated supply chain—or how much vehicle output any one measure would protect—cannot be quantified from the cited evidence. A useful assessment has to distinguish announced capacity from material actually traded, and both from components qualified for production.
